Your Moral And Intellectual Superiors

Editor’s Note: February 2, 2016

An earlier version of this story included quotes attributed to a woman and her husband, described as Trump supporters. The woman was identified by her first name, Kathy, while the man was identified only as her husband. The reporter had provided a real individual’s full name and identity to editors but said the source did not want it to be used. When contacted, this individual said she did not support Trump, had not attended his rally, and had never spoken to our reporter.

Full story here, including — “Thompson fabricated several quotes in his stories and created fake email accounts that he used to impersonate people, one of which was a Gmail account in my name.”

  1. “We have decided not to remove the posts but have labeled them “Retracted” or “Corrected,” based on our findings. We have added notes to stories with unconfirmed quotes.”

This is worse than correcting an egrigious front page story with a page 22 1-column correction notice. At least when a correction notice is printed they don’t reprint the whole lying story. Do they even know what the word retraction means?

  2. I disagree.
Keeping the story on their web site but with the corrections noted was the honest thing to do. It would have been far easier for them to remove the story as if it had never happened. Certainly Juan Thompson can’t like to see this…

The problems with this story reflect a pattern of misattributed quotes that The Intercept uncovered in stories written by Juan Thompson, a former staff reporter.

  3. Shocking behaviour from a trusted news organization… no wait, who are these guys again? The intercept? Never heard of them before. Looks like just another bunch of leftards with no fact checkers, kind of like the New York Times, I guess, only without the newsprint.

  4. What a vulgar and self absorbed POS. His tweets alone deserve a swift kick in the pants.
On a side not, interesting that they let his articles remain on the Intercept site. I wonder if they would do that with Global Warming articles that were disastrously wrong?

  5. In a perfect world that would be the honest thing to do. Unfortunately, the misrepresentations and outright lies in his stories will continue to be referenced by the “inaccurate but true” crowd, muddying the debate. I am more concerned about retracted stories than corrected ones. If a story is factual but for a few errors then by all means the story should stand with its errors noted and corrected. If a story is retracted because the publication has no faith in its accuracy, it should be pulled down with a retraction message left in its place.
One would hope that Thompson has some conscience and is genuinely contrite when he reads such notes attached to his stories, but all I can say to that is Dan Rather. He still stands by his reporting and he’s a much bigger fish than Thompson.

They’re saying that as if it’s a bad thing.

  7. The naivety is stifling.. The old political nasty Tricks of the 60’s are back.. the guy is a paid activist spreading confusing BS….He has achieved his agenda…You can’t un-ring a bell.. Trump may keep his lawyers busy collecting the money of fools, paper & data tracks are a bitch…

  8. Why can’t everyone just enjoy in his 30 seconds into fame moment? The stupid make remarkable great roman candles.
