  1. There has long been speculation that a massive planetary body existed in the outer solar system. The orbits of Uranus and Neptune hinted that there was something else there, though it wasn’t clear where or how big it was. When Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto, there was still some question as it didn’t have the amount of mass that would produce the effects that were noted.
As well, the type of instruments that would allow observation of bodies in deep space weren’t available until recently. Perhaps a new planet may indeed exist and is awaiting discovery.

  2. regarding Pluto, feel free to wiki this Michael Brown dude. maybe refine your search to puckerfaced anal retentive types that ignore 80 years of astronomy where apparently not one single exception to his interpretation of ‘planet’ is allowed.
kinda like, oh, politicians changing the rules in the middle of the game to suit their agendas.
and having them switched back by subsequent administrations.

  3. was watching a news item about the “planet”. we can’t see it but it must be there. kind of like rational thought in Canada.

  4. So, they can find “Earth-like” planets 20 light years away, but aren’t sure who our neighbours are? Got it…

  5. They are calling it “Planet Nine.” THAT’s the best they could come up with??? These guys REALLY gotta get out a little more!
“it’s big – about two to four times the diameter of the Earth,…”
That has to be a misquote on the part of the article’s authors, it probably should read: “two to four times the MASS of the Earth” since the only evidence of it’s existence are effects which can only be explained by the presence of a large mass in the vicinity.
Earth is the densest planet in our Solar System with an average density of 5.51 grams per cubic centimeter. Jupiter is the largest and most massive planet in our Solar System, but it only has a density of 1.33 grams per cubic centimeter because it is made up almost entirely of gases, such as helium and hydrogen. Saturn is the second largest planet, but it has the lowest density in our Solar System at only .687 gram per cubic centimeter.
At 4X the mass of Earth but same density as Saturn (.125 x Earth), “Planet Nine” would have a volume of 32 x Earth, and a diameter of 40,453 km (3.175 x Earth). (hey, that’s close to the diameter prediction in the article – OK, I was bored)
Here’s a better article on the news:

  6. I stopped following astrology when I learned it was a cult while in college. This is just further proof.

  7. Could this be the ‘more public funding is needed’ love child of the union of two science disciplines?
    Astronomy and global warming.
Hey it worked before…why not again?!
Once burned, Twice shy. My skepticism remains prevalent at this time. I’m already putting a padlock on my wallet.

  8. There already is a 9th planet. It is called Pluto. Screw these scientific
destroyers, If it has enough mass to influence the orbit of Neptune, it
    is a planet!
Give Clyde Tombaugh back his baby!

  9. They are calling it “Planet Nine.” THAT’s the best they could come up with???

    Whoooosh!
That’s not the sound of the Starship Enterprize zooming through silent space, but a cheesy science fiction reference zooming over your head.

  10. The planet will be named something really hip and “now”. It will be named “Planet Abdulla-Obama”.
