I was a construction contractor for many years, almost every month I received a threatening letter from CRA warning me against doing any work “under the table”. They even included an offer that if I immediately filled out a form telling them how much I’d earned, all would be forgiven,except of course the taxes I owed.
I never took part in the underground economy and finally called them up and told them off. I was audited, they found no problems, and the threatening letters stopped,finally.
I was born and raised in the country, the people were self sufficient and didn’t suffer fools, as you say, it was a matter of survival.It seems the more you jam people into cities, the more the old fashioned virtues disappear.
