Liberals expend tremendous effort changing the culture. Conservatives expend tremendous effort changing elected officials every other November — and then are surprised that it doesn’t make much difference. Culture trumps politics — which is why, once the question’s been settled culturally, conservatives are reduced to playing catch-up, twisting themselves into pretzels to explain why gay marriage is really conservative after all, or why 30-million unskilled immigrants with a majority of births out of wedlock are “natural allies” of the Republican Party.

The National Geographic Society of Washington will lay off about 180 of its 2,000 employees in a cost-cutting move that follows the sale of its famous magazine and other assets to a company controlled by Rupert Murdoch.

That’s a big difference, and Charles Koch is not going to overcome it by running a few TV ads in election season. With media properties selling at a discount now is a good time to buy some. (And the opportunity is bigger than just news media. People like the Kochs could have a big impact buying “soft” media like women’s magazines and websites that lean even further left.)
Breaking up the monoculture will help voters see the world from different perspectives, will provide a check on the worst excesses of biased media and may even help the John Harwoods of the world realize that they, themselves, are not actually unbiased.
If the National Geographic Society sold off everything of value, why wouldn’t it lay off 2,000 of its 2,000 employees? They’ve got a seriously big slush fund with no purpose.

Well, I used to read the ones in my dentist’s waiting room. But those copies were so old they still had ads for boys’ military academies in the back.
This is what I have been discussing with my MP for the CPC, who is a great guy, businessman, family man and a hard worker but so what. What is the point of us going door to door asking citizens for their support to reelect Harper when they are liberals for the other 95% of the election cycle? We lost by over 6,000 votes, 55% Liberal vs 36% CPC in our riding. Huge numbers of public employees, their families, contacts, those dependent on government carried the day. Our schools tell their students to vote Liberal or their teacher will be fired. The media like the Globe and Mail delay releasing the obscene payment to the Teachers Union for bargaining costs. The entertainment industry praises the left for their concern for the planet with AGW.
Until we can get our message to these avenues we are done as the big cities expand with their Liberal bias.
The culture problem is compounded by how the left have pulled the ladder up behind them. It is difficult to create conservative cultural messages when the left-statist gatekeepers do such a good job of controlling the messages seen by the majority.
At the moment, merely existing on the fringes is probably the best that a conservative creative type can do. Maybe that’s not a bad thing, as the next few years will be interesting.

As far as the culture wars, conservatives lost that war through the leftist covert takeover of our educational institutions slowly over the 1970s and 80s. It has just become more obvious the last decade as the left knows it won and can now safely push the envelope even more aggressively. Like our friend John suggests, anyone to the right of the moderate left is totally out of step.
Like the White Army during 1917-20, we can win the odd battle or skirmish here or there but the war has been lost and most of us never noticed there was a war.
It will have to play out like it has in eastern Europe and our grandchildren will fix it.
The most hated demographic group – on the whole freakin’ planet – in this day and age is white males ( especially if they are conservative and heterosexual…and of course Christians ).

It has made it possible to have divorce laws that are extremely unfair to men.

It’s a war – and it’s been waged against us (traditionalists of western culture) for no moral or rational reason. It is an ideology which runs on fantasies exceeding those of bronze-age mythology. It is waged by an creed and ideology which defines itself by who it hates. “Political correctness” (the cultural aspect of the war before it goes hot with pogroms) sets up a shifting scale of things and people we must “hate”. The final stage will to openly attack these prescribed groups with mobs incited by the PC institutions and leaders. We see this in the US to some degree now.
People/mindsets who exist to hate are psychopaths. But in typical communist/fascist mass conditioning, it is the targets of this hate and violence who are branded as “haters”. When I first heard the soviet-like sloganeering; “haters gotta hate” as a socially stigmatizing slur aimed at any inconvenient truth spoken about the subversive PC narrative, I knew the culture war had gone hot.
It’s a war folks – It’s a war against reason and morality by a mob of indoctrinated sociopaths – act accordingly.
