Reader Tips

I’m still sick. Or to describe it more accurately — “sick again” — as old symptoms that I thought I’d gotten beyond (such as my sore throat) keep coming back again for round two, round three. My voice is back about 30% of normal, though not consistently. But those are mere nuisances compared to The Cough. I’m coughing when I’m awake, I’m coughing in my sleep, when I can sleep. I know this because coughing fits are making their way into my dreams. Last night it was “at” Saratoga, inspired by the Travers, no doubt. But I’m not sleeping much. I get a few hours of productive time in the day, but in the evening, it all comes crashing back down, like about now. So, again this week, blogging may be sporadic.
But as sick as I am, I have to say I still count myself fortunate. Why? Because the Saskatchewan Roughriders are sicker. Much, much sicker.

  1. Sounds rather like the bug that rattled our household for several months beginning last November. I blame the grandbrats. But it was particularly vicious, and cyclical. Just when we thought we had shaken it, we were laid low again. Still have residual cough. Kate – take care of yourself.

  2. Some of these really strange bugs seemed to hit here right after Obama sent illegals from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala to every state in the union to go to school. I’m sure the “Public Health” authorities know about it, but most are loyal social justice warriors who would never put the health of Americans first.

  3. When you’ve got a relentless cough that just will NOT pack it in, remember one word, Kate: Delsym.
It has the same basic drug – Dextromethorphan – in a lot of cough bottles these days, but Delsym has some sort of proprietary formulation called Dextromethorphan Polistirex, that has a time release feature. One shot and you’re good for 12 hours. It is truly the only thing that got us through that ridiculously lingering cough-thing that everybody had last year.
It used to be regularly available here in Canada, but I haven’t seen it in our pharmacies in years. I had to buy it online. Worth every single penny of the currency exchange plus 10 dollars shipping.
    Best of luck, missus.

  4. Mkelley:
I have to disagree with you. We (Canada-USA) import food from the countries you mention. Pineapples, bananas and nuts can carry any disease that God has wrought! Maybe adding border inspectors would alleviate the problem. Who knows? I was in Hong Kong airport last year. Most of the clerks, agents etc. were wearing masks. When I asked why the masks, they replied, ”foreign diseases.” And I did have to accept that I was, for the moment, ”the foreigner.”
Keeping in mind that Hong Kong was once a part of the Commonwealth.
    God bless Kate.

  5. The people calling for Corey Chamblins head after 0-4 are laughing and saying I told ya so at this point. That s### show earlier was the worst I’ve seen in years and lord knows whether that is rock bottom yet. Pulling Smith for Sunseri was mind blowing, the last straw for me and probably anyone else who still had some belief in Chamblins ability to coach.

  6. Any chance it’s pertussis? aka whooping cough. I had that a couple years ago, real nasty. My niece almost died from it.

  7. I highly recommend cough syrup with codeine. It’s the only thing that helped the cough that accompanied influenza. It’s available over the counter but they limit how often you can purchase a bottle.

  8. Kate: I had a run in with this last year, and after 5 weeks the Doc prescribed 10 days of penicillin. For the cough I used W*tkins Medicated ointment on the soles of my feet at night. After reading that this was a good way to control coughing in infants, I thought it couldn’t harm to try it. Slept much better till I recovered. Get well soon Kate.

  9. “Pulling Smith for Sunseri was mind blowing”
Sunseri is not a QB.. Handles the ball like PA little girl
Blake Simms, Crimson Tide, at least learned the theory of WINNING

  10. Beware of cough syrups that suppress coughing and lead to pneumonia. Also dangerous for kids.
Good luck. Good film to divert you called Locke on Netflix Canada about a man taking telephone calls as he drives to London. An acting tour de force.

  11. Tussaminic (prescription only) cough syrup with codeine is a Godsend when afflicted with a terrible cough.I also had bout of persistant cough last winter..it came from the very bottom of my chest, nothing would move and it sounded terrible.Went to Dr..no meds given, was told it had to ‘run it’s course’ After 3 wks of agonizing cough,I went to a walk-in clinic with nurse practictioner, and was given an inhaler (have never used one prev)..it was Teva-Salbutamol HFA.After just a few ‘puffs’ I was feeling MUCH improved, and it stopped the cough.

  13. A veterans for Harper Facebook group is taking on the myths.
“Well I am impressed. Just since I have been and Admin on this page I have noticed a steadily increasing number of anti conservative pro CVA and ABC posts here. This means only one thing they are running scared or we wouldn’t even be a blip on their radar. Organized opposition is what they fear the most as we as veterans can punch big holes in their fake arguments and talking points. There is nothing a Liberal or NDP fear more than an educated, informed and fact based argument. In fact when I checked on Friday ABC had about 1100 followers. We are now almost 1400 followers with another 2000 talking about us. Keep sharing, keep posting and eventually the general public will see through their one issue agenda.”

  14. It’s the same virus I had about a month ago. It made the rounds in Calgary and sounds as though it’s made its way east.
This too will pass — but not without a lot more coughing!

I walked down the street in Barcelona, and suddenly discovered a terrible truth – Europe died in Auschwitz.
We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, and talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world.”

  21. Maybe this is too obvious, Kate – but have you seen a doctor? It might just be a stubborn virus which will eventually clear up on its own, but it may also be something more serious.

    “Stalinist Confessions”
“During Stalin’s Great Terror, accusations of treason struck fear in the hearts of Soviet citizens, and lengthy imprisonment or firing squads often followed. Many of the accused sealed their fates by agreeing to confessions after torture or interrogation by the NKVD. Some, however, gave up without a fight. Igal Halfin investigates the phenomenon of a mass surrender to the will of the state. He deciphers the skillfully rendered discourse through which Stalin defined his cult of personality and consolidated his power by building a grassroots base of support and instilling a collective psyche in every citizen.”

  24. I hope you feel better. I’ve had a long term debilitating cough and found relief with liquid gold in the form of Tussinex, a cough syrup with hydrocodone. It is the only thing which allowed me to sleep. Unfortunately, sometime in the last 24 months or so, the US FDA reclassified it as a Class II drug, making it too much trouble for most docs to prescribe. If Canadian docs can write an Rx for it, though, I highly recommend the stuff. Can’t get better if you can’t sleep, and this makes that possible…
