  1. The gopher went into the wrong hole..
    Great idea..

    In praise of other animals,
Deputy Sheriff Todd Frazier’s life was saved Monday by his K9 partner, Lucas, a black Belgian Malinois who police say chased the 3 assailants down before they could slit Frazier’s throat..
“He had blood all over him.”

  2. This sure to get those PETA idiots bothred Good PETA is a stupid organization

  3. That must have been one shallow gopher hole to fill up with only one gallon! We kids used to pour bucket after bucket down the hole, often it never did work.
Sometimes we worked in league with the driver of the local “honey wagon”, whose 300 gallon tank would drown out the deepest gopher hole, though nobody wanted to get too close to the little bugger after he came up swimming in that stuff.

  4. I saw the oddest thing when I lived in Saskatoon.
We were going to Pike Lake and there were a bunch of run over gophers on the highway and other gophers were eating them.
And they were getting run over, too.

  5. Ok so now what? You play with it? Set it loose to dig up your neighbors sod? Terrify the thing before you kll it?
Gophers are the reason .22s were invented

  6. I am with occam…. what is the need to catch it?
Whack him with a shovel or pop him with a .22. The gizmo where you pump propane and oxygen down the home and light it is fun too.

  7. My mom’s favourite story about growing up in rural Saskatchewan was filling gopher holes with water and then catching them when they came out.

  8. I remember when we were in Venturers (an older age group of Scouts), probably 17 years old, we were “hired” (okay, he gave us a couple free boxes of ammo.) to deal with gophers on a guy’s property.
There was a subdivision of lake cabins down the road. After a while, some maniac from the cabins came running onto the field, across our line of fire, waving his arms frantically, to save the gophers! After our leader managed to calm the guy down, the leader famously proclaimed, “Let ’em live for today boys, let ’em live.”

  9. At the risk of sounding stupid, is that dead mascot a gopher,
at the top of small dead animals?
Around here all we ever see are dead groundhogs, squirrels, and plenty of deer.
    Anyway…
It seems impossible for an animal that size to crawl into a milk jug.
But, I do remember during a 140 mph hurricane I watched a rooster get blown into a coke bottle..
    Its freaking eyes were huge.
    yo..:)

  10. send a muzzeled ferret after the rabbits. If’n you forgit to muzzle the sucker, go home and don’t wait, he’s having lunch, dinner, and supper down there and will be a while:-)))

  11. As the narrative in the clip says, this works only with single holes.
When I was a kid, I went with my older cousins who were armed with cream cans full of water and a 22. They had a system that worked well, and every so often would take all the tails to the rural municipal office a collect a 5 cent bounty for each tail. These days I use oats soaked in gopher poison and if I have a slack morning I practice with my Ruger 10/22.

  12. Someone find the hole that Justine lives in and let’s see if this works as well as I think it can.

  13. Step 2: Apply label “Rescue Gopher” to bottle.
Sell to big city progressives at $200 a bottle.

  14. We used to take a box of 100 .22LR each and stand at fence posts then compete counting hits to misses. Average good day would be around 95 hits to 5 misses per 100 shots. Winner had the most hits, loser sucked it up until next time.
Just a couple of bolt action Cooey’s back then.

  15. “At the risk of sounding stupid, is that dead mascot a gopher,
at the top of small dead animals? …”
Yes, that is what around here we call commonly call a gopher, although many if not most that we see are properly named Richardson’s Ground Squirrel.

  16. If you have a dog. There is nothing they like more than chasing and catching ground squirrels.
If the gopher hole is with garden hose range, the water supply is pretty easy. If not a wagon with a five gallon bucket or two will do for most gopher holes.
A 3/4 ton with a water tank if you have a bigger field and more than one dog to entertain.
Pour water, stand back and watch your dog’s excitement level grow in anticipation.
The wet gopher exits the hole running and and the race is on!
Putting a snare over the gopher hole works too but you have to block any secondary hole that the gopher might run out of.
A farmer friend of mine had an older, black Lab, who loved to watch gophers being shot.
He was too old to chase them.
During his last summer hunt, he would wander over to the shot gophers and swallow them whole.
I’m sure in his mind he was reliving the days of being a young dog and chasing and catching them himself.
Early humans and canines got to be best friends because we both love to hunt gophers (and other stuff)!
That is my story and I’m sticking to it.

  17. .22’s? Cooey’s? Pikers! Mosin Nagant M44 is the only way to gopher. And when you run out of ammo, there’s always the bayonet.

  18. the reason that creepy guy catches those gophers alive is because he then skins them and spit roasts them.

  19. Thanks,
So that is what the mating side of a gopher looks like?
Learning something each and every day at SDA..

  20. Don;
As you suggested how many shallow single gopher holes did we ever see? Not many. Not
only did I haul water in my wagon but then had to sling it over a fence. Great
    advancement when I graduated to a .22.
Leg hold traps have been pretty much outlawed. My gopher population is pretty safe with me now as they are not doing a lot of damage as they live in rocks and not my
lawn. Natural predators are working the bank as well.

  21. Yeah well here in SW Morontario, the coyotes have pretty well made ground hogs an endangered species…..
I realized a long way back that ground hog holes were naturally ventilated….put fire in the exhaust hole, spill gasoline a the induction hole then get back quick.
At dusk fire and flame will be visible up to 4-5 feet out.
A genius er two, thought they understood my method and lit every hole…..lost their eyebrows and stuff……some folks have no mind fer detail or heed other’s advise.

  22. Back when we were kids my brother and I used a variation of this scheme to kill Belding Ground Squirrels. We would carry water in a five gallon bucket from a nearby watercourse. One of us would place his outstretched hand over the hole while the other poured the water in. The squirrel would stick his head into the hand which would then be closed over his head. One had to squeeze fairly hard on the head to prevent the squirrel from biting him. The squirrel was then killed by several different means. One such was to throw the squirrel into a closed room in an outbuilding where a pusscat kept her kittens. The cat became the executioner.

It’s called a Rodenator, and I had one when we had an acreage:

Lotsa fun, but make sure you have ear protection. I wore earplugs under the earmuffs, and it would still make my ears ring sometimes.
    Ken (Kulak):
“As the narrative in the clip says, this works only with single holes.”
I have never seen a gopher hole with only one entrance.
    GOR:
“A 22-250 would be a lot more fun.”
My preference was .223Rem – AR15 with a 3-9 power scope. Expensive unless you reloaded your own. I bought a 17HMR, fun and accurate a lot further than .22LR, but the light bullet was too erratic in a gusty cross wind.
