What’s The Opposite of Diversity?

University.

Safe spaces are an expression of the conviction, increasingly prevalent among college students, that their schools should keep them from being “bombarded” by discomfiting or distressing viewpoints. Think of the safe space as the live-action version of the better-known trigger warning, a notice put on top of a syllabus or an assigned reading to alert students to the presence of potentially disturbing material.

  1. It’s interesting that this dweeb is worried about how particular texts will make his students “feel”.The precious darlings can be freaked out by pretty much anything and if they are they run to the Internet and vent.
As a teacher this guy is a failure. My sense is that his fear of liberal backlash means he is actively making his students dumber.

  2. First we had “Free Speech” zones – which was insulting enough, considering that the ENTIRE COUNTRY is supposed to be a free speech zone.
Now we have “Free Speech Free” zones.
Considering the insatiable monetary appetite of the U.S. Government, I predict the next step is “Free Speech Fee” zones.

  3. Merely an extension of the elimination of competition/reality in life through no winners, altered scoring, “participant” ribbons for the poor, little kids and their fragile feelings. Long past time these people grew up and faced life as it is, not some Alice-in-Wonderland fantasy. None of them will be equipped to face the future as it really is.

  4. It’s times like this I’m very glad I don’t have a kid in Collage and that all campuses are “gun free zones”.

  5. I wouldn’t have a problem with “STFU zones” if they apply to everyone.
This is not the case, progressive social justice types get free reign to preach, protest, and get into peoples faces because to them “noble” causes can’t possibly be offensive.

  6. A shooter at a university is only picking off grave stones, the real battle happened before the kids arrived there.

  7. To seriously study the Humanities and Science, particular history and the development of liberal democracies, Judeo-Christian values and critical thought.
That requires intellectual courage, no doubt about it.
If you don’t find some of what you study to be disturbing then you’re not studying the development of Western Civilization.
Fear is normal in the face of danger, over coming that fear and prevailing, that is the legacy of homo sapiens, thinking man.
The ancient tradition among aboriginals, Spartan and aborigines of going on a “walkabout” as an entry into adulthood still has merit.
If the government mandated preference for armed forces veterans and retired veterans for the teaching positions, we’d shape up the students in no time. 🙂

  8. These links that lead on to the NYT page should really come with trigger warnings.

  9. No kidding!! Why are we giving them ‘hits’. The less they get the sooner they join the CBC on the extinct list of media dinosaurs.
