according to the village its a 15 minute drive to get there. unfortunately they didn’t say if that was driving at 40 or 100 if 100 then could be 25k to the res. this isn’t the case of a shared backyard. again if you want to complain about something complain about the band. they had a truck why didn’t they train their people or make sure it could actually work on the reserve.
the problem I have with your argument is you wouldn’t be making it if the other reserve was just a white town. if it wasn’t a reserve and they stopped paying and didn’t look after their own fire trucks you would not be making this argument. its not bigotry to hold Indians to the same standard as anyone else.
I just remember driving past and through it, so it seems as one location, could be mistaken over time.
I would blame if this happened in a white town just the same, put out the fire, send the bill, fight after it later.
But if it is indeed outside of their jurisdiction, then sorry I guess. Like a poster said, a house burned down while the Edmonton FD sat and watched because they thought it was outside their boundary, come to find out Edmonton annexed it awhile back, so who is wrong here?
the Edmonton situation is different in that the FD screwed up because they were obligated to do something and didn’t. in this situation the village was not obligated and therefore didn’t screw up.

this tragedy isn’t news… it’s tuesday.
It would just be nice if the IdleNoMore crowd acknowledged this from time to time. In my blogposts from last night I channeled a little Steyn and asked why the people who live there weren’t more furious over this. Their “mayor” makes $100,000 while the mayor down the highway makes $964. Three councilors from the same family collect over $340,000, which might not be something that bothers you except that they can’t get around to paying a bill from May 2014 and as a result buildings burn helplessly to the ground.
In other jurisdictions we might complain about the pay for politicians, but at least they go through the motions of being moderately competent. On Makwa there just isn’t even an attempt, and the 950 other band members sit on their hands accepting this. Oh, until they get to complain to APTN about “racism” and being “ignored” by Ottawa.
How very strange, the story has vanished from the news reporting.
It had all the ingredients for a month-long media frenzy. Dead kids, dead first nations kids even, evil white town not coming to put out the fire, chief crying that they’re being denied essential services because of racism, plenty of potential to lay blame higher and higher on the government totem pole (no pun intended) due to unspecified but ubiquitous ‘cuts’, maybe even blame Harper personally.
And then we found out the band council embezzled the fire service money, and all that narrative withered on the vine.
There is also the fact that the Reserve owns their own fire truck and instead of using annual funding specifically for fire protection they parked the truck and left it until it seized and was no longer usable. Also even if Loon lake responded chances of saving the children were slim as the father got to them before first responders (police and emt) and they were already deceased. I was a volunteer firefighter for 16 years and we once had a call to a fire 5 mins from our station house and my father who was the fire chief and i responded to the fire in 8 mins….the child inside had already expired from smoke inhalation but my father still risked his life to enter the building so the family would have an in tact child to bury. But the point is we could not save her in 8 mins. Loon lake weren’t going to be able to save them with a response time of 15mns. The reserve should have put their fire truck to good use and they may have been able to save these children. Use some of the over $100000 dollars that the chief is paid to activate a proper fire department. The Loon lake mayor is paid 1/42nd of what the chief of the reserve is….sorry but nobody to blame but the band controlling the distribution of funds. Someone should lay both those babies on the Band Chiefs doorstep. Just my honest opinion backed with some facts. SMH.
