Never the twain shall meet. Minister Ambrose, call your Standing Committee on Health.
There is now a sufficient body of evidence available on several aspects and effects of EC for recent reviews to conclude that health care professionals and public health bodies should encourage smokers who cannot stop smoking using available treatments, or do not want to do so, to switch to EC [2],[3].
Emerging trends are as expected. In the UK where EC are available and taken up by sufficient numbers of smokers, quit rates are increasing and decline in smoking, especially among young people, is accelerating [19]-[21].
Via, Taste Your Juice

So, are the tobacco banners now getting paid by the tobacco lobby?
But, but , butt this does not address the scourge of 4th hand smoke (seeing somebody smoking).
The anti-tobacco people are the same people who are pro-weed because freedom. They’re against juice because it’s “unregulated”. Liberalism is a mental disease.
*
“james says… The anti-tobacco people are the same people who are pro-weed because freedom.”
hang on… we’re on the cusp of legalising marijuana… and the supreme court says the government has to supply heroin to junkies in british columbia… BUT E-CIGARETTES ARE VERBOTEN?
i must be having an acid flashback.

The Nanny state is an evolved condition. Old fashion smokes predated that condition and their users and manufacturers have resisted the nanny state (or co-opted it through rent-seeking) during its rise. We now find a new and relatively beneficial alternative, primarily of interest to existing smokers facing the hideous result of decades of intrusive progressive busybodies in visceral opposition to anything related to their old adversary.
The mentality behind this and every other form of prohibition is one of denial of free will and self-responsibility of others. “I don’t need mindless paternalism but everyone else does so lets force them at gun point”.
Yesterday. Family ‘pot heads’ showed me a battery opperated ‘smoking device’. It delivered lower doses at similar ‘mental impairment’ as traditional higher dosage methods. It saved them money. They are substantially younger. Granpa rolled his own….
Ain’t technology beautiful! Oh, and lets not forget that insideous spur… capitalism!
The hippies would be prould!
PS… most importantly. They now smoke less.
The tobacco tax zealots will be unhappy, they prey on the low income poor folks of minority communities in society. With one hand they give out welfare/Help and with the other hand they claw back Sin Taxes.
The City & State of New York enforces tobacco taxes using City Police. Most in the Black communities can’t afford a full pack of cigarettes and resort to buying “dime” packs. It was a loose cigarette seller “Eric Garner” that had been harassed (arrested) 9 times before he died “I can’t breath”. The greed of the political class taxation that killed him, the police just followed orders
The tobacco tax is also linked to the death of another black man “Michael Brown” Without the Tobacco tax he most could have afforded to buy the cigarillos that he stole from the store. He would be alive today if the State was/is not preying on minority communities.
The Sin Taxes have exceeded all reasonable decency. The toll is to high.
e-cigs are verboten because if we allow them, one person, somewhere out there, maybe, well not really, will start vaping and then, eek, will SWITCH TO SMOKING!!
When the first case of that actually happens, our government will be sure to let everyone know. In the meantime, you have to smoke, not vape – do it for the children.
Slap has it right. The do-gooder tax, tax, and spend even more progressives in government are afraid. Afraid that people will no longer buy over-taxed cigarettes. $14 packs of cigarettes in NYC. Not $14 for a carton, but $14 for 20 cigarettes. So people smuggle in cigarettes that cost $5-6 per pack just a few hundred miles away. And the government does not get its cut in sin taxes. DiBlasio and his ilk are determined to collect their sin taxes, even if it kills people.
Just ask Eric Garner.
The people who argue that are the same people who say that weed DOES NOT lead to usage of other elicit drugs.
Tobacco taxes are highest in Alberta. That bastion of Liberals and their communist rule of 45 years.
I predict that with the controls put on vaping, the next step will be an abundance of vaping gear available for sale on the Reserves.
Personally, I buy my butts from the reserve and my vaping products in the US.
Alberta has the lowest tobacco taxes in canada.
Electronic cigarettes may be more tempting to non-smoking youths than conventional cigarettes, and once young people have tried e-cigarettes they are more inclined to give regular cigarettes a try, U.S. researchers said on Monday.
A report, released by a team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lends evidence to the argument that electronic cigarettes encourage youth smoking.
The study, based on nationally representative youth surveys, found that more than a quarter-million adolescents and teens who had never smoked used an electronic cigarette in 2013, a threefold increase from 2011.
Youths who had tried e-cigarettes were nearly twice as likely to say they would try a conventional cigarette in the next year compared with those who had never tried an e-cigarette, according to the study in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.
E-cigarettes are slim, reusable, metal-tube devices containing nicotine-laced liquids that come in exotic flavors. When users puff, the nicotine is heated and released as a vapor containing no tar, unlike conventional cigarette smoke.
Health experts have raised concerns that the burgeoning $2 billion e-cigarette industry, which has been virtually unregulated, would reverse gains in the decades-long effort to curb youth smoking in the United States. Just 15.7 percent of U.S. teenagers reported smoking in 2013, the lowest rate on record.

Never even hint at restricting an addict’s drugs, they will become irrational and testy.
Pick your youth poison, John.
“Every day, almost 3,900 children under 18 years of age try their first cigarette, and more than 950 of them will become new, regular daily smokers.6 Half of them will ultimately die from their habit.7” – http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/about-smoking/facts-figures/children-teens-and-tobacco.html
In case you missed the math, your study says 263k/yr try electronic nicotine…with no numbers on addictions except speculation.
The CDC (2009) study says 1.4M try cigarettes/year with 390k of them becoming regular smokers.
So;
Education has failed,
Social experiments have failed,
Guilt has failed,
Health concerns have failed.
Introducing tobacco to civilization

Pick your youth poison, John. …your study says…
No thank you. That’s not “my” study. Note it’s by the CDC; I’m sure they have sufficient credibility for their position.
I don’t care what method addicts use to kill themselves. However, once they achieve the terminal illness they desire, then the universal health care system should give them nothing but morphine. If their families want to pay to extend their lives with more drugs then THEY can pay for it.
Apparently ‘vaping’ is the best method of using cannabis. The nicotine addicts that believe that cannabis should be illegal are self righteous hypocrites.
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2014/04/18/302992602/pot-smoke-and-mirrors-vaporizer-pens-hide-marijuana-use
There isn’t an e-cigarette product available that will also allow you to heat up and inhale cannabis. The heating coil will dry burn and eventually catch fire if surrounded by dry leaf material. At the same time, there isn’t a cannabis ‘vaporizer’ that will allow you to also use e-cigarette juices. They’re two, entirely different animals.
To those that are grossly uninformed, or who just enjoy running around crying wolf – ‘tiny children smoking candy flavoured pot, human sacrifice, cats and dogs living together…’ because pot smokers and pot smoking devices are beginning to emulate those already used by e-cigarette users, is hardly the fault of e-cigarette users. In fact, one of the most popular and best selling cannabis vaporizers looks exactly like an asthma inhaler. Hardly a reason to do away with asthma inhalers.
IMO the e-cig is the most important beneficial development for human health since the birth control pill.
Not only will existing tobaccos smokers benefit greatly extending their live expectancy, but teenage girls will use them as a means of staying slim rather than tobacco and likely will resume using them after childbirth to remain slim. The benefits of their use to maintain a healthy weight are enormous and – of course – never discussed at most formal (informal is quite another story) gatherings of health professionals. At least for now. I think very quickly the gps of the world will be recommending them.
I guess you missed the link:
http://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2014/04/18/302992602/pot-smoke-and-mirrors-vaporizer-pens-hide-marijuana-use
Do you have anything besides your personal opinion to back up your assertions?
I agree. Less harmful ways to accommodate people’s addictions can’t be so bad.
Tobacco taxes are highest in Alberta.
Not quite my friend, google says otherwise : http://www.nsra-adnf.ca/cms/file/files/130404_map_and_table.pdf
John Galt – you really didn’t need 7 posts to prove you’re an as*hole.
“No thank you. That’s not “my” study. Note it’s by the CDC; I’m sure they have sufficient credibility for their position.”
I suppose you will throw your full support behind
this …http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/climate/how.html
I am sure they have sufficient credibility for this position also, which if we
take it at face value implies transitioning to
greener energies and more nuclear power,,codewords for anti fossil fuels.
I have been ‘vaping’ for a couple of months.
It takes away the craving. It also seems to break the pyschological urges, such as lighting up when you get in your car, or when you first wake up.That is my experience.
AND, it is much cheaper.
I was surreptitiously vaping in the workplace for 3 weeks and no one noticed. If I lit a cig up , everyone would know within seconds.
Unfortunately, a union type busybody did see me, and now I’m back to taking real cigarette breaks.
Some people just can’t help sticking their nose into everything. It is their reason to exist.
Most seem to miss the elephant in the front seat here – it is the seething immorality of government which oppresses smokers while at the same time profits from the addiction with their retail monopoly on tobacco same as alcohol , the same immorality which wants to disarm civilians and claim a monopoly on the use of force yet will not take full liability for your safety.
Government is a moral vacuum and is responsible for more deaths this century than smoking.
You can obviously do it in one.
Of course not. Do you always jump to unfounded conclusions when you disagree with what someone posts? If you don’t already know my position on global/warming/climate/change then you haven’t been paying attention have you?
” found that more than a quarter-million adolescents and teens who had never smoked used an electronic cigarette in 2013, a threefold increase from 2011.”
That is a severely flawed finding.
The availability and knowledge of e-cigs had increased dramatically from 2011 to 2013. E cigs were in their infancy back in 2011.
9 posts – pontificating excellence.
@ John Galt
Any statistic regarding smoking is contrived.
There are no statistically relevant data to link second hand smoke to cancer or any other disease in co-inhabiting non-smokers.
http://jnci.oxfordjournals.org/content/early/2013/12/05/jnci.djt365.extract
Cooked science because the agenda was banning smoking, The “studies” are run to “prove” the predetermined outcome, not because it kills non-smokers, but because it stinks. The laws banning follow.
Global Warming is riding on those very coat tails the fraud of second hand smoke created.
At least our natives are showing a strong sense of capitalism . $ 30 a carton and many people I know don’t seem to feel a lot of guilt avoiding the excessive taxation. As with booze, government has the expertise to move any business underground with their nanny state approach. Friend told me he has a line on some real lawn darts. Custom made. No taxes. Underground of course since they are now illegal. Canada, the true north strong and free ?
Addicts will do anything to justify their addiction. Nothing to see here, move along…
Just like those stupid Anti-smoking ads showing this jerk holding this dumb little card and scaring away a tobaco vending machine or the annoying once they were putting on the radio and sponsored by the CALIFORNIA DEPT of HEALTH SERVICES the usial mindless drivel from those who must have sniffed glue one time in their life
Nicotine addiction is the second-leading cause of death worldwide. The important causes of smoking-related mortality are atherosclerotic vascular disease, cancer, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Smoking also can contribute to other diseases, such as histiocytosis X, respiratory bronchiolitis, obstructive sleep apnea, idiopathic pneumothorax, low birth weight, and perinatal mortality.
Currently, there are about 1.3 billion smokers the world, most (84%) of them in developing countries.[7] If current smoking trends continue, tobacco will kill 10 million people each year by 2020.[8] Through direct healthcare costs and loss of productivity from death and illness, tobacco will cost governments an estimated US $200 billion per year.
http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/287555-overview#a0101
1.3 billion and only 10 million die each year ? Wow, the odds are far better than the anti smoking nazis like smokers to believe. Also doesn’t give the age of the victims. Still, I’m always impressed with the way activists can pull numbers out of their ass. Just like the IPCC can.
Cytisine, also known as baptitoxine and sophorine, is an alkaloid that occurs naturally in several plant genera, such as Laburnum and Cytisus of the family Fabaceae. It has been used medically to help with smoking cessation: recent clinical trials have shown cytisine to be more effective than conventional smoking cessation aids, and it is much cheaper than similar products. Its molecular structure has some similarity to that of nicotine and it has similar pharmacological effects.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cytisine
We can lead people to knowledge, but we can’t make them think.
doesn’t give the age of the victims
The data are found at the link posted. Its under the big word “Epidemiology”
To use a link, you position your computer cursor over it then click. People seeking information know how to use them, while people who don’t want their preconceived notions challenged by facts will avoid links and continue demonstrating willful ignorance.
I dunno John. The biggest killer seems to be all other causes.
http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/82-625-x/2014001/article/11896/c-g/c-g01-eng.htm
Hmmm. Internet troll, John Gait, has a mortality rate of 0.00769 for smokers.
The mortality rate for the general population as per:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortality_rate
is 0.00789.
The term “worldwide” means more than just Canada. Got it now?
E-cigarette use slapped with growing provincial regulation
https://ca.news.yahoo.com/e-cigarette-slapped-growing-provincial-100000026.html
Whether they contain nicotine or not, e-cigarettes may pose health risks when consumed in large doses or over long periods of time. E-liquid contains propyleneglycol (PG), a common food additive and flavouring. While PG is considered safe for oral consumption, the health risks of inhaling PG deep into the lungs is unknown.
” found that more than a quarter-million adolescents and teens who had never smoked used an electronic cigarette in 2013, a threefold increase from 2011.”
That is a severely flawed finding.

You have ignored this comment. Yet the study is what you base your argument upon.
I will make this simple for you.
You quoted a study that makes unjustified conclusions.
It is wrong.
You are wrong.
If there was a study that showed teens in 2014 had committed suicide within a month of posting on ‘Instagram’ at ten times the rate that was found in 2012, would you conclude that ‘Instagram’ causes teen suicide ?
Or would you say, ‘wait a minute, Instagram was not very popular in 2012’?
A reasonable person would state the obvious.
An activist would carry on. They can only see their agenda.
Damn the facts, full speed ahead.
So I guess they should remove Propylene Glycol from all asthma inhalers then. I have seen nothing but scare tactics and rantings from nanny staters and public health agencies (then again I repeat myself). For some reason a lot of people are discovering vaping and getting off vile tobacco. Not only that, people that take up vaping are really kicking the habit and discovering that it actually works. Not unlike other NRT which I think has a huge recidivism rate compared to anything else.
One thing that bugs me about the children trying it out and picking up smoking. Calling e-cigs a gateway. I have seen the ones for sale in gas stations and variety stores. Tried one once too. Big issue here…NONE of them contain nicotine. All those easily accessible e-cigs are flavored and NICOTINE FREE! All the vape shops I have been too have had an explicit 19 or older policy. In fact I haven’t seen anyone under the age of 30 in one of those shops. Ages tend to be older and very much older.
Now about those cannabis vapers… They have been around for longer then e-cigs. Pot heads have always looked for a better way to get a THC hit then just smoking a joint or pipe. I have heard of some intricate devices being made to create a vapor for cannabis. As well the e-joints are a completely different set up then what vapers use. It has to be.
I don’t really have a dog in this race. I don’t smoke, or vape, or what have you. I’ve never smoked or use drugs. Hell, I don’t even drink.
But mein gott, John Galt. Were you molested by cigarettes as a child? It’s my best guess to explain the level of vitriol you’re unleashing over the issue.
I’d personally rather someone get their nicotine fix via an e-cigarette than a real one. I can’t STAND cigarette smoke. The only thing I’d hate more is the government telling everybody else they can’t smoke because it bothers me.
Sure, I believe that smoking is a bad choice. But if you aren’t free to make bad personal choices… well, you aren’t free. Give a bureaucrat the power to destroy something you don’t like, and very soon they’ll be coming for something you do.
The anti-smoking lobby is made up of people who were picked on when they were in school. They spent a lot of time being stuffed into lockers. When they grew up, they got a chance to be the bullies for a change and developed a taste, even a craving, to bully smokers.
What’s the difference between E-cigarettes and chewing gum with nicotine in it? The juice for E-cigarettes costs me $16 per bottle and lasts for three weeks. Nicorettes cost me $73 for a month’s supply. Actual cigarettes cost me $97 for a week’s supply. E-cigarettes win hands down!
So my costs have gone from $97 down to $5 per week. I will spend the $92 freed up on riotous living. The other good thing is that the government doesn’t get it’s tax cut and I don’t have to listen to the idiots in government talking about how they are fighting tobacco addiction.
I also find I am gradually weaning myself off of my nicotine addiction. Go figure!
Best comment of the thread!
Particularly the last sentence… “Give a bureaucrat the power to destroy something you don’t like, and very soon they’ll be coming for something you do.”
