The person behind the siege has reportedly claimed he wants to speak to Tony Abbott, Australia’s prime minister, live on radio.
He reportedly told police negotiators he had “devices all over the city”.
Reports suggest there are between 13 and 40 people inside the café.

Regarding immigration, we should demand reciprocity from Muslim countries that do not allow immigration/religious freedom for non-Muslims. If they don’t change their policy we can reject Muslim immigration on the grounds that we do not wish to become an intolerant society.
So the lone gunman’s still in there and has been for how many hours now? Won’t he have to eventually eat or, ahem, use the facilities? He can’t drag this out much longer.

I wonder how many of the hostages that survived will be willing to share public transit or for that matter any public facility with a Muslim ever again. Now extend that number into their relatives and friends. Building on that core group we could very well start a movement to ban all immigration from Muslim countries and ban all foreign aid to said countries. On the existing domestic front rather than monitor the mosques and imams the logical solution is to institute a policy of immediate deportation to every adherent of a mosque where a member commits an act of terrorism. Make the “peace’ loving members police themselves. No exceptions, anyone committing and act of terror instantly puts a deportation order on the whole community. If that sounds a bit racist then you are part of the problem. Western society has been trying to co-exist with Islam since the Crusades, we have opened up our society to them through foreign aid programs and immigration and the radicals and leaders within the religion still call for our defeat, domination and death. In the last thirty years we have seen an escalation of attacks from the Achille Lauro, the Munich Massacre, 9/11, Madrid bombings, London bombings, Mumbai attack, and our own Cenotaph shooting, to list only a few. When do we say enough is enough.

I live about a five-minute walk from a mosque. There has never been anything resembling an “outbreak” of bigotry or intolerance in this part of the world that I’m aware of – unless you want to count the obviously Muslim man (keffiyeh, taqiyah) ahead of me in the Shopper’s Drug post office lineup raving like a lunatic for five minutes about the “f*cking fagg0t Canadians” that were forcing him to pay an amount of postage he wasn’t happy with.

Do you have any idea how much glass deflects a rifle bullet? Save you the trouble of looking it up: A lot, and deflection is random. This assumes a 90 degree angle of incidence to the glass. Less than 90 degrees and you can forget hitting anything smaller than the back wall.
They most likely didn’t have a workable angle to get the guy from. Plus the small detail that he was surrounded by 50 hostages.
Incidentally, for all of you who like me can’t quite understand how ONE (1) semi-coherent nutjob captures and holds 50 people hostage, this is a feature of the modern educational system. The person talking loudly at the front of the room is automatically obeyed.
As well, see if you can imagine what the headline would be today if Mr. Mooselimb had been killed with a nail file to the brain by some random girl who he picked to be his first victim. That girl would be in police custody right now, I assure you. Most likely facing a murder charge.

Eh, as far as “Tactics” – it was clear that the SWAT team had CONTROL and readily available access through the same door that the reported (5) Chinese hostages escaped through. The video evidence was pretty clear.
It should have also been pretty evident that there was a lone gunman/ bomer at that point, requiring a few “skilled” tactical guys to retrace the escapee’s steps back into the building – and then – from cover lay a couple EO scoped submachine gun double taps to the head.
Just say’n – multiple flash-bangs + crowd of armoured cops + countless spray and pray rounds through the front door appeared, well…………. amateurish.

Yer right, the whole operation was extremely amateurish. A tactical move in the first hour like you describe would have solved the problem quickly.
In the 2 cases in Eastern Canada and now in Australia law enforcement has put the mad muzzies down. 10 or 15 years ago that would not have been possible because of the pissing and moaning the cops would have to endure from our media. Seems that just like SWAT in Canada and US they are best used to raid houses of innocent unsuspecting citizens. When it comes to standing ground against determined opponents they drop like the goons in New Brunswick and bystanders drop with them.
Although to be fair, sniper shots through heavy glass are tricky. Read Phantom’s post above. Deflection is an issue and penetration has to be just right to go though glass and then through target but not to hit the hostages. My guess is they considered it and decided not to use snipers because of the potential complications not because they fell sorry for the member of the broad strata of society.
You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about. My ERT buddies say shooting through a window is a piece-of-cake for a correctly trained sniper team. I’ll believe them over your silly mutterings.

From John Plaster’s Ultimate Sniper: An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers, shooting through glass will deflect the bullet. It will slow the bullet slightly, but also cause it to tumble instead of spiralling like it should be. If this happens at the shooter end (i.e. sniper concealed in a building, shoots through the window), then the shot will be very far off target. If the glass is at the target end then the shot will still be off, but not by as much (less distance to travel after being disrupted). However, the window could shatter, sending glass fragments into the room. So, long story short: Don’t shoot through glass if it’s at your end, don’t shoot through if there are people/things in the room that you don’t want injured/damaged.
– – A buddy was a sniper in the marines–he said it partly depends on the glass type, and partly on the angle you are shooting through the glass. Ordinary household window glass can be shot through at any old angle because it is so weak, it hardly matters. The “problem” glass is safety-laminated types, such as automobile front and rear windows, and the glass panels typically used in doors and see-through walls of modern office buildings. If you can shoot straight-through (perpendicular to) laminated glass, it isn’t much of a problem, normally–but if you have to shoot through it at an angle, it can deflect a 30-cal bullet enough that a human target standing only a few feet from the other side of it can be missed entirely (this is assuming that the glass is some distance away from the shooter, and the target is sanding a few feet on the opposite side of the glass)…..
– The exception when they don’t like shooting at all through glass is when the target is wearing body armor–as said, glass often slices up bullet jackets and causes bullets to tumble, and both these things can ruin their penetration through bulletproof armor materials where normally they would sail right through.
However:
More often than explosives, Sniper teams use two shots, one to shatter the glass, followed immediately by a shot for effect, which passes through the hole, to the target. Brittle materials like glass will leave a sufficiently large hole, even when reinforced by wire, or plastic. The second sniper shoots at the place where the hole will be, rather than waiting for the round to strike. His shot, if the team is well trained, will arrive before the target moves enough to cause a miss.
