Google Engineers Explain Why They Stopped R&D in Renewable Energy;
“Trying to combat climate change exclusively with today’s renewable energy technologies simply won’t work; we need a fundamentally different approach,” wrote Google’s Ross Koningstein and David Fork in a piece published yesterday in IEEE’s Spectrum.
It’s a striking admission from a company that has relentlessly supported the growth of renewable energy.
When Google first set out on its mission, the REC team was convinced that existing renewables (or those close to commercialization) could reduce emissions enough to avoid the worst climate change scenarios. But by 2011, when engineers realized that their investments were not playing out as expected, they ditched the program and set out to rethink its goals.

Reading the article, these so-called “engineers” are still swallowing the AGW Kool-Ade; by the bucketfull. They’ve just come to the realization that so-called “green” energy generation cannot, and will not do a damn thing to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. Thus, more draconian measures must be taken.
actually if these enlightened Aholes could see beyond their rose coloured glasses they would realize that their nonsense actually has the reverse impact to what they intended it to have. Using the automotive segment as an example, the more energy costs the more it impacts cost of living which in turn impacts disposable spending cash, which further impacts upgrading one’s “things”, such as car, home appliances, home, and demands greater use of some items, therefore increasing worker’s CO2 foot print while degrading the modernity of those items used. Digression, the result of green BS. These brainiacs need to go out and find a job on a farm shoveling bull Shiite.
Looks good until you dig deeper. What gordinkneehill said…they are still MAJOR alarmists

They swallowed Hansen’s absurd predictions and assumptions.
Google has always been chock full of rich “progressive” hypocrites. Were it not for the fact that they happen to be somewhat clever at writing computer code they would be mowing my lawn.
Also keep in mind that even in engineering schools youngsters are now severely brainwashed. They come out of school like little robots spouting the party line. Seen it with my own eyes. Brains are mush. Depressing.
The left often derides capitalism and the monetary system, and the system isn’t perfect. But it sure as hell is the only thing that finally brings these dumb ideas down. And they would come down sooner were it not for endless government subsidies.
In essence the idiots at Google act like Kings because Google brings in enough cash that they can live in the illusory world of make believe. But when the cash stops, the stupidity of their ideas can no longer be hidden.
Sure, we need a fundamentally different approach.
As in: no approach at all.
These tech wizards who think they can alter the climate are nuttier than Don Quixote.
And not nearly as funny.
CO2 is a trace gas in the atmosphere not a pollutant.
CO2 concentrations were on the order of 280 ppmv about 400, 325, 240, 130 million years ago and present. Why do they perceive that as a problem?

There were no industrial revolutions in ages past, thus the current hysteria is most likely way out of proportion.
If anything increased CO2 concentrations would likely be good for the Oxygen cycle of plant growth and further enhance the ‘greening of the planet’.

I’m all for greater energy efficiency by sound science, not cat herding hysteria.
All Suzukis in the world will not induce me to stop breathing and exhaling CO2.
Google’s efforts are indeed misplaced, energy efficiency comes from sound engineering rather than latter day Don Quixote’s tilting at windmills and solar panels.

They lament… “What, then, is the energy technology that can meet the challenging cost targets? How will we remove CO2 from the air? We don’t have the answers.”
Yes we do. It’s called photosynthesis.
I started out in traditional engineering before moving to software engineering and the difference in attitudes is stark and disturbing. Traditional engineers are keenly aware of the restraints of materials, time and above all physics, while software engineers tend to assume that, as with software, a few more iterations or a few more teraflops of CPU power will just solve everything. There’s a fundamental disconnect between today’s computer geeks and reality that didn’t used to be there because so much software development today is totally divorced from the underlying hardware. They don’t even need to know microelectronics any more.
After watching Greenpeace Founder Patrick Moore’s presentation, again, I wonder why we still discuss the AGW exploiters meme of CO2 ?
My understanding is the level of Carbon Dioxide is near the millennium low points for healthy vegetation growth. The slow climbing out of the last Ice Age is not only a positive for the anticipated levelling of the Human Being population at the United Nation’s projection of 7 Billion unless the overshooting to 10 Billion is not curtailed with expansion of the Social Contract into less developed locations ( Countries ?).
This levelling of the world’s population at or around 7 Billion will provide the critical mass for ongoing technological advancement. Allowing the people of the African Continent to share in the hard won technology of the industrial revolution developed on the backs of the poor of Europe and North America should be expanded. Allow the poor of less developed locations to move into a sustainable social contract situation.
There is no need to penalize the poor of less developed areas for the sacrifice of industrial revolution poor. The offspring of the European poor have successfully added through hard work and wisdom the means of developing the unused resources of North America. This National Wealth expanded to provide educational opportunities which created the Human critical mass for the electronic revolution.
There is now a reduced need to protect the vested interests of Europe and North America. Instant communicating sets aside the overseer class, and yet expands the managerial skills communicating groupings to foster growth. The market place opportunities for developing “The Wealth of Less Developed Locations” is at hand.
Significantly this international reach of individuals will make this possible without the “Guild Rights” of Entrepreneurs and Unions.
The hard work being accomplished in the less developed areas and funded by a multitude of world-wide small investors will reward the hard working locals. It will also provide ongoing income for the individual investor. The opportunity for continually creating individual wealth will enhance the Social Contract.
Contribution to the integrity of the community now becoming the goal. The greatest approbation will be the Magnanimous Individual, not who has the most toys.
Sufficient wealth for development of “life-style-desirabilty” will now be available. All that is required is to set aside the vested interests, who in their Luddite efforts as bureaucrats; politicians; exploiters; et al inhibit the communication between humans on a individual level. The spirit of Gaia; Manitou; God expects this.
CAGW is a sacrosanct piety of the dominant progressive culture (enabling statist intervention into all things related to energy) of which, Google is a corporate poster child. Could it be that given their anti-CO2 premise, all rational roads lead to nuclear power which has been the anti-Christ of progressive watermelon dogma for the last 40 years. Wind and Solar are obviously the preferred choices for the innumerate. Hence they are stonewalled by their own theocracy.
I like this guy. He’s sharp as a whip:

Very well said indeed Daniel. I couldn’t not agree more.
I thought it was because they were not getting enough of a cash grab to make it profitable. Didn’t they ask for a few hundred million a few weeks ago?
I’m not buying the excuse, it’s always about how much money they can sponge out of the taxpayers.
I’m hopeful that the upcoming blackouts will help turn the tide, but who knows? Plus there is a lot of money to be stolen from the middle class with these schemes.
the same google $300B market “value”, whom wanted a US Fed grant to pay a US Fed loan to cover a “failed” solar plant?
that google?
They did get to the core of the problem with renewable energy:
“Unfortunately, most of today’s clean generation sources can’t provide power that is both distributed and dispatchable. ………. Yet if we invented a distributed, dispatchable power technology, it could transform the energy marketplace and the roles played by utilities and their customers.”
The way that I read this is, if there was sufficient infrastructure (power transmission lines, etc) and if the system was intelligent enough and fast enough (dispatchable), wind and solar power in one geographic area could be distributed throughout the grid seamlessly.
This means, purely for example, that even small residential rooftop solar power systems generating only a few extra watts in Arizona could “cumulatively” contribute to power needs in New York during the early evening when power demand is high there and vice versa. No “stand-by” generators would be needed in New York, etc.
I think it is a point well taken. On the other hand, recognizing a solution is not fixing the problem.
While there are many opposed to this massive AGW fraud, the sad part is that the Gaia cultists are slowly winning the war one little brainwashed kid and one little carbon tax at a time. Ontario will be getting one soon. Quebec and BC will not be elimination their carbon taxes any time soon as we have no leaders of the stature of Tony Abbot.
Instead of hiring engineers, Google should have hired climate scientists who, with sufficient statistical sophistry, can torture data to give them any answer they want. They take James Hansen’s work seriously enough.
The so called watermelons not only want us to freeze in the dark, they want us to starve while we freeze in the dark. As Daniel Ream mentioned above, engineers aren’t what they used to be at least not when it come to the sacred arts of environmental or climate or software engineering. They seem to be living in an alternate universe. I propose we suggest they find a means of getting there so as to leave us alone.
I also suggest that anyone who has school age progeny, remove them from school and let them learn at home. They’ll be much further ahead and won’t be nearly as influenced by this sick religion which is reinforced by peer orientation as opposed to family orientation and just as destructive as the religion of peace.
Renewable energy isn’t going to work unless the left can manage to change the laws of thermodynamics. In the meantime i’m long oil and long nuclear.
The only reliable grid-scale renewable energy is hydroelectricity. It does not violate the laws of thermodynamics last time I checked.
if every human on the planet ceased to exist tomorrow the climate will continue to do what it has done for millions of years, change. it will do it hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly on into infinity.
