Not Watching For The Asteroid

The US television industry has just suffered the first decline in early advertising-buying since the recession. At this year’s upfront market – the summer sales process in which networks typically sell about two-thirds of their commercial inventory to big brands for the coming TV season – spending fell 6 per cent to $18.1bn, according to Media Dynamics estimates. This is the first annual drop in upfront ad sales across broadcast and cable networks since 2009.

  1. I it wasn’t for CFL,HNIC and the odd good movie, I wouldn’t even turn the TV on.
I suspect most of this ad money is spent on trailer park spuds and IC hoodies to sell them cheap beer, twinkies and dream scape lifestyle BS – this is a video narcotic to the lobotomized hordes who watch network TV 24/7.

  2. For everyone under 50 and living outside of Saskatchewan, please explain what is this CFL you speak of? #nfl

  3. advertising products that people do not have enough money to buy may start seeming a little futile.

  4. Welcome to Obama’s America. Is this the change he was talking about. Seriously, TV is largely garbage right now. With very few exceptions unless you have a DVD player and a nice collection of decent movies (most made prior to the year 2000) you can pretty must get rid of your cable box. And yet here in Canada the likes of Rogers, Bell, Shaw, Cogeco and Eastlink are charging more and more for their pathetic service. Thank god for NetFlix.

  5. Re NBC: Chuck Todd (Toad) the Democrat MSNBC insider replaces Chuckles (Gregory) on Meet the Press…That flushing sound becomes the cry of the doomed, once a proud Peacock Network…

  6. That the networks are hurting for revenue is pretty obvious – we’re now seeing commercials that were once seen only on late night TV – the FlowBee comes to mind.

  7. I rarely watch network/cable TV anymore, prefer streaming. Very few ads, which makes me happy. Madison Avenue should die screaming, in my opinion.

  8. Starve them of revenue. Let the networks die.
I’m saving $700 a year after I cancelled my cable TV subscription a year ago. Got a Roku box for $100 and a Netflix subscription for $8/month and that has all the movies/series I care to see.
I bought a Leaf Antenna for $40 to pull in local channels over the air. But I still won’t bother to watch Sunday ‘news’ magazine shows. Even if you agree with their opinions, they’re completely predictable.

  9. I have Access Cable in Saskatchewan. It’s so bad that at 64 years of age, I sometimes found myself watching ”Thomas and Friends” because I am a model train enthusiast, and there was nothing else to watch. The show is filmed in England; they used real model trains until recently when they began to use computerized imagery. So now, Sir Topham Hatt’s lips move, he speaks–but the trains are fake and look like garbage.
The worst programs are about the idiots who gather around storage units and fight over boxes of used dishes and broken lamps. Then there’s the couples who run around the jungle stark naked, looking for snakes and lizards to boost their protein levels when they could have good food in their pack sacks.
There is one program worth watching. ”Longmire” is a small town sheriff in Wyoming who tends to take the laws in his own hands.
Last but not least are the CBC news that are filled with venom and targeted at the Conservative Party of Canada. And guess what?? Unless I pay more than $68.00 per month, I can’t have Sun News.
The whole TV industry has gone to hell!

  10. If you produce socialist trash, that is nothing but political formula. This is the result
The TV Media have no one to blame but themselves. No one wants to watch endless leftist propaganda. It produces boring shows, with even more tedious story lines. Marxism is like Islam, humorless to an aggressive level.
People don’t appreciate rigged reality shows either. Its an insult to the audience. Storage wars, or big brother anyone? Look what Obamacare has done to Hospital shows, or our police action to cop TV.Not one production on MSM TV has any connection with the World we all really live in.
You find better fare on-line at Netflex.

  11. The only thing worth watching is Sun News Network, and then, umm, nothing much else really.
And I make sure to order some stuff from their advertisers, in order to keep them happy with SNN.

  12. “because I am a model train enthusiast,”
Well now, that makes at least two of us model train enthusiasts on this blog.
Back on topic. The sooner the networks, particularly CBC goes broke the better.

  13. I unloaded our cable subscription in 2002, and when our TV (used for DVDs) died in 2009, I junked it and didn’t replace it.
    Haven’t missed it at all!
