  3. Scientists want two commonly used pesticides banned around the world for helping cause the mass deaths of bees and harming the planet’s ecosystem.
    A panel of independent scientists, operating as the Task Force on Systemic Pesticides, found the pesticides neonicotinoids and fipronil are harming the environment, posing a similar threat as DDT did in the 1960s….
    Neonics are a popularly used preventative pesticide, being sprayed over crops or coated on plant seeds before there is a pest problem, according to the task force….
    After being treated with systemic pesticides, plants absorb and transport them to all their parts: leaves, flowers, roots, stems, pollen and nectar.
    The pesticides are then picked up by insects, like bees and butterflies.
    “Seventy-five per cent of the crops that we eat are pollinated by insects of one type or another — mostly by bees,” said professor Dave Goulson, one of the report’s authors.
    Pollinators, like bees and butterflies, are heavily affected by pesticides.

  4. There was an incident today at dinner time, 6.00 pm on the C-train on the main trans downtown route, 7th Ave. SW. here in Calgary that I was witness to.
    A woman had fallen down on the sidewalk waiting area where the train stops. Her shirt was half off and her pants were pulled down to just above her knees to such extent that it was impossible to not note her lack of underwear, and multiple bruises and caesarian scar.
    Another woman was attending at the scene, and was plainly describing what had happened to (I assume) the emergency response people at 911.
    As the train stopped, and loaded with us passengers, the woman’s male friend walked to the woman, took her arm and dragged her on the pavement , onto the train, further removing her pants, and leaving her shirt as it were.
    He then turned to 2 20’ish women seated where he wanted to sit, and told the two women to “move the F away from here, stop looking so pretty and give him room to sit”. So they moved as far as they could. He then instructed us to find something else to do. I didn’t look away, and neither did anyone else.
    I had pushed the emergency stop button while he had dragged the woman onto the train, and we waited patiently for less than a minute.
    The 2 police walked onto the train, asked the woman the normal things you ask to see if someone was drunk, and proceeded to lift her off the train, instructing her friend to back off. The police were as gentle as possible, they seemed to care well beyond the required level of concern, pulled her pants up, pulled her shirt down, and placed her onto a seat, holding her in place, upright. While they waited for the ambulance to arrive.
    I wanted to make note of the incident here, as the police did appear to be of the type more typical of the early 60’s Tv show, “Adam-12”
    I didn’t record it. Perhaps I should have but it was just the sort of thing I didn’t expect with so many accounts of people being subjected to police justice…

    On Mother’s Day and Father’s day, respectively, Peter MacKay, acting as Justice Minister, sent out letters to his staff, addressed to ”everyone.” I would interpret a letter addressed to everyone as being sent to both men and women.
    Check out how the CBC warped the context of the letters, and in an ttempt to degrade Mr. MacKay.

    Correct me if I’m mistaken but my understanding is that France banned neonicotinoids ~5 years ago. I don’t know if that included fipronil. France continues to have “colony collapse disorder.”
    I’m not big on pesticides, any of them, but I do use them occasionally because they are useful tools. My point is that I support actual data driven science but am increasingly suspicious of what I call agenda driven science. It’s difficult to separate the real and the agenda anymore. I will say simply that real world data fails to support the allegation that neonicotinoids are the cause of CCD.

  25. How many rights do you think you have in Alberta ????
    Apparently, the right to privacy in your own home is not one.
    Yesterday there was a notice posted on the doors to my apt. building from Alberta Health. The ‘ Safe Housing inspection Program ‘ was requesting access to inspect the premises, including all rental units.
    I don’t run a restaurant in my apartment. I don’t allow the public in, I don’t run a farm/grow-op, etc.
    I also do not like gov’t officials or anyone to enter my home when I am not there, and without my permission.
    So before I left for work this morning, I posted a note on my door saying that I deny AH (and my landlord) permission to enter my premises.
    I also set up a webcam.
    Not only did my landlord open my door for Alberta Health, the AH ‘executive officer’ was preceded by a Calgary Police officer.
    This is not right. But, it is happening across Alberta.
    Your tax dollars at work.

    Incorrect. There is plenty of science to show that areas where these insecticides are not used nor have ever been used, have healthy bee populations.
    Unlike the climate change scam, these scientists studying CCD have no anti-capitalist agenda. Quite to the contrary, they realize how dependent the entire food industry is on pollination by bees.
    Be very careful with broad brush knee-jerk reactions. Do some research before commenting on a subject where you have nothing but assumed anecdotal stories.

    Well, no kidding. That is absolutely outrageous. I’d be PO’d too. Obviously the govt and private citizens have quite different understandings about what “safe housing” means.

  28. The Safe Housing Inspection Program is under the auspices of Alberta Health Services. Because it’s just so darned good for your health to know that government officials are entering your home when you’re not there.

  29. @north of 60: What is it about you that is so annoying? Could it be that when anyone offers a idea or fact that conflicts with your views you immediately insult them?? Or is it just that your manners are generally grating?
    Just so happens that my knowledge on this subject is fairly extensive……unlike yours. If there is “plenty of science to show that areas where these insecticides are not used nor have ever been used, have healthy bee populations”, how about listing a few, or even one. And I’m talking about a country with a competent agricultural service, not like say, in Africa where most bees are not even of the same race as European Honey Bee in addition to incompetence.
    And even if you could list one country, what does it prove?? It’s circumstantial evidence at best. You can’t prove cause and effect by this method. That’s not science.
    The European Honey bee has lots of problems, Varroa Mite, Tracheal Bee Mite, various diseases, etc. Commercially, they are trucked hundreds or even thousands of miles in a season to follow the crops. (This alone is stressful). Breeders have imported Queens from god knows where. CCD is likely to be a complex of problems

    Exactly what the scientists are saying, and I agree. However it’s the systemic use of pesticides similar to the systemic use of antibiotics in agriculture that is inhibiting their immune systems to combat the natural stress factors in their environment. These pesticides are not used in Canada’s Territories where bee populations remain healthy despite a much harsher environment.
    Here is an analogy you might understand. If you are an alcoholic or addicted to some other drug you may be able to live a functionally normal life, however your immune system will be impaired and you will be more susceptible to illness and you will statistically die prematurely.

  34. It’s not just kinda creepy. If some a crackhead or some neighbourhood…strapling entered my home when I wasn’t there I’d be creeped out for a short period of time, but if a government “health” agency – provincial, no less – entered my home without permission, avec cop, for the sake of my health, and as part of a public health program/campaign, that’s something I’d see forever in the face of every creepily smug, politically correct statist for years to come.
    On the plus side, my apprehension would never, at any point, be wrong.
