I happened on to this link when researching a local wind turbine site:
http://reason.org/news/show/wind-turbines-are-beautiful
The Judith Gap, MT site is in an area locally notorious for its wind. Even here, though, the turbines only turn 38% of the time. The electricity produced costs about double that made burning natural gas, and Northwestern Energy, its sole customer, is planning to build a $200 million dollar gas plant to compensate for the intermittent nature of wind power. This isn’t an energy policy. It’s grand theft.

YULIA TYMOSHENKO: WE WILL WIN THIS WAR
VIDEO AND STORY
http://www.tymoshenko.ua/en/article/yulia_tymoshenko_02_03_2014_01
She really lays it on the line. In the Ukraine, no politician has clean hands, including Tymoshenko. But she has suffered mightily for liberty. She almost died as a political prisoner, and she is still quite ill.
I have followed events in the Ukraine for years. Canada is loaded with former Ukrainians, and I have had many Ukrainian friends.
I like her website. It keeps me up-to-date, and it’s direct, with no MSM mouthpiece garbling the message.
I have a lot of respect for that lady, but if she believes the US and Britain will intervene, she will be very disappointed. If Maggie Thatcher was still in charge it would be different but Britain has gone soft and politically correct. They will not intervene. The US ??……….we won’t even go there. If it isn’t black or on a golf course, Obama won’t care. He can’t even solve the most basic problems at home.
From Yulia Tymoshenko’s statement regarding the future of Ukraine:
“Firstly, we are not alone in this confrontation with Russia. In 1994 Ukraine signed the Budapest Memorandum with the U.S., UK and Russia guaranteeing our security in exchange for giving up our nuclear arsenal. Russia today is flagrantly violating its obligations and invading our territory. But I’m confident that the United States and Great Britain will never violate this Memorandum and will do everything they can to ensure peace in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin knows that by declaring war on us, he is declaring war on the guarantors of our security – the U.S. and Great Britain. I don’t think that Russia will cross this line, because if it does it will lose.”
She doesn’t mince her words here. Either an agreement, a security agreement, is worth the paper it’s printed and signed on, or it is not.
Which is it? … while the rest of the world waits…
The ball seems to be in UK / USA’s court.
EBD, THANKS for ‘After the Storm,’ which is beautiful and moving! I’ve never heard it before.
THE DEMOCRACIES OF THE WORLD HAVE ALREADY STARTED.
Don’t be so sure Russia can get away with this. When Russia attempted a takeover of Georgia, Condoleeza Rice stared them down, and they retreated.
Russia is impoverished, drunk, short-lived, depopulating itself, disorganized, and corrupt. Their military is a ghost of its former self. They would lose a war with Israel. As Napoleon and Hitler found out, massive land invasions often don’t end well, especially if the population is hostile.

G7 LEADERS CONDEMN RUSSIA OVER UKRAINE
http://www.timesofisrael.com/g7-leaders-condemn-russia-over-ukraine/
World powers threaten to pull out from Sochi summit, censure Moscow for its recent actions in Crimea
WASHINGTON — The leaders of the world’s top industrialized powers turned Sunday on fellow G8 member Russia for its clear violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty, withdrawing from preparations for June’s G8 summit in Sochi.
Symbolically billing themselves as the “G7,” the leaders said Russia’s actions were incompatible with the Group of Eight Nations, which Moscow joined in 1997, and said they would stay out of the Black Sea resort summit until the G8 can return to “meaningful” dialogue.
The statement, signed by the leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United States and the presidents of the European Council and European Commission, was released by the White House.
The leaders said they joined together to “condemn the Russian Federation’s clear violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, in contravention of Russia’s obligations under the UN Charter and its 1997 basing agreement with Ukraine.”
“We call on Russia to address any ongoing security or human rights concerns that it has with Ukraine through direct negotiations, and/or via international observation or mediation under the auspices of the UN or the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.”
The statement called on all parties to “behave with the greatest extent of self-restraint and responsibility, and to decrease the tensions.”
The leaders also said that Russia’s actions in sending troops into Crimea contravened the principles on which the G7 and the G8 grouping operates.
“As such, we have decided for the time being to suspend our participation in activities associated with the preparation of the scheduled G8 Summit in Sochi in June, until the environment comes back where the G8 is able to have meaningful discussion.
“We are united in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and its right to choose its own future,” the statement said, vowing support for Ukraine’s stability and political and economic well-being.
In a separate statement, the G7 finance ministers promised a firm aid package to Ukraine, while calling for economic reform and a central role by the International Monetary Fund to stave off an economic crisis.
“We are united in our commitment to provide strong financial backing to Ukraine,” they said ahead of an IMF team visit to Ukraine this week to launch technical and policy discussions.
“IMF support will be critical in unlocking additional assistance from the World Bank, other international financial institutions, the EU and bilateral sources.”

I would look at the nations of the G7 and predict that the first move would be China against Japan. China knows they will be next in a world dominated by the Obama administration and picking sides at this point, nation against nation, starts a ticking clock.
These folks are stupid beyond reason. The incoming launch will hit before Obama gets his shoes on. His administration is made up of political hairballs.
Putin is playing Chess & Obama is playing marbles, what a Chicago gang of punks don’t know will fill grave yards.
when the people of the nation proved the man leading it was corrupt and lawless, and in return they also chose to be lawless and corrupt instead of imposing lawfulness, they both caused the innocent slaughter of women and children of the Ukraine and at that point, with the government non existent and exiled and the people also being lawless the Ukraine borders were also voided, its constitution and all its laws mocked at by both the people and that government made it a non nation and Russia or any other nation has every right to claim the real estate…the same in Egypt,..the same in Syria…the same in Sudan…none of any world nations has to put up with lawless nations and slaughterhouse borders, they can go in without any legal problems and totally claim the lands on the basis of no existent laws or constitutions. Thank fully the youth of the Ukraine, who could not rely on these parents for peace, may find peaceful cohabitation with Russia where their own people were murdering them. —Dromia
Re: Fred Reed: The Unfortunately Innate Nature of Intelligence.
Well, in some cases, higher intelligence only results in a better parasite.
Intelligence and wisdom are two different things, as demonstrated by the relative wealth of Christian and non-Christian countries. Wealth has less to do with intelligence and more to do with how intelligence is applied.
This is not going to help the Helium shortage.
EBD, thanks for the “After the Storm” piece.
The west will leave Ukraine in the lurch just like they left the Hungarians in the lurch. Many died in the cellars of the House of Terror located at Andrássy út 60 (street)in Budapest, Hungary after the Soviets reestablished control over the country. Now a museum.
What is it with even some commenters here advocating for Russia to take over Ukraine once again.
They are not all useless degrees. Internships are getting to be a “norm” even in some science fields. There is a problem with youth unemployment and agencies are using this as a context for exploitation. It is slave labour. How else would you describe a situation where people are having to work for no pay. It’s a symptom of a difficult economy. I have sympathy for those young people rather than being callously dismissive of their concerns.
Lots of paying jobs out there for people who having made it their dream to study “the social implications of cohabiting with a same-sex shrew.”
Russia has issued a deadline for Ukrainian forces to surrender. I’m waiting for more details.

I agree that wisdom and intelligence can be two different things, and often are (particularly when people conflate higher education (e.g. gender studies degrees) with intelligence), but Reed’s post was about the heritability of intelligence, not wisdom. Wisdom comes from experience + intelligence, whereas intelligence itself (in the complex-problem-solving sense) is largely innate.
It’s true in some cases, but I think that in general the productive people are less likely to be dumb as a sack of hammers than the parasitic types like Peggy Joseph (“I won’t have to worry about putting gas in my car, I won’t have to worry about paying my mortgage, you know, if I help (Obama) he’s going to help me.”)
Correlation ≠ causality. If sub-Saharan Africa had been largely Christian for the last one thousand years, and if northern Europeans had been adherents of some other faith – say, Judaism – I seriously doubt that Africa would be wealthier and more productive than Europe.
Intelligence, and particularly its “heritability”, has been, and always will be, an issue, even if it’s an “unfortunate” one (“inconvenient” would be just as apt) in the current politically-correct climate.
From AGW-believer Skeptic Link’s Mann Overboard“:
Remember, all this from a warmist.
…if northern Europeans had been adherents of some other faith – say, Judaism – I seriously doubt that Africa would be wealthier and more productive than Europe.
It’s not Christianity that brings wealth, it’s the Power behind Christianity. South Africa was pretty wealthy until lately when that connection was lost.
Anyway, higher intelligence doesn’t equal any great advantage so far as independence goes. Look at Israel, totally dependent upon aid and defense from the Christian world.

The anthropogenic CO2 impact on climate is greatly over-estimated by the climate models and uncritical media, as the recent climate development clearly shows.”

forced sale of Crimea?
I have a modest proposal:
How about if Russia _buys_ Crimea from the Ukraine? The method is simple; Russia need merely pay off the Ukraine’s foreign debt (which of course no-one expected to recoup), and in exchange Ukraine lets Crimea go without objections. Of course it’s a forced sale, and pricey, but it’s cheaper than war, or even long-term diplomatic tensions.
But hard on the Tatars, of course…

Sorry, this is OT in a Reader Tips thread but I have to respond — one last comment:
The Democratic Republic of Congo is 95.7% Christian. Uganda is 88.6%, the Dominican Republic 95.2%, Chile 82%, Venezuela 98%, Equatorial Guinea 98.6%, Burundi 75%, Haiti 83.7%, Kenya 85.1 percent, Liberia 85.5 percent – the list goes on.
Compare that to the percentage of Christians in far wealthier (per capita) countries that are either in Europe or were founded by Europeans: US 73%, the Netherlands 51.2%, the UK 59.3%, New Zealand 55.6%, France 63%, and Canada 67.3 percent.
South Africa (81.7% Christian) and Zimbabwe (85%) went to shit when Europeans left and Africans took over.
What’s the most obvious difference between Holland, New Zealand, the UK, etc. on the one hand, and Uganda and Zimbabwe on the other, other than the fact that Uganda and Zimbabwe have a far higher percentage of Christians? Does anything else stand out?

“Leftists become incandescent when reminded of the socialist roots of Nazism”
“On 16 June 1941, as Hitler readied his forces for Operation Barbarossa, Josef Goebbels looked forward to the new order that the Nazis would impose on a conquered Russia. There would be no come-back, he wrote, for capitalists nor priests nor Tsars. Rather, in the place of debased, Jewish Bolshevism, the Wehrmacht would deliver “der echte Sozialismus”: real socialism.
Goebbels never doubted that he was a socialist. He understood Nazism to be a better and more plausible form of socialism than that propagated by Lenin. Instead of spreading itself across different nations, it would operate within the unit of the Volk.
So total is the cultural victory of the modern Left that the merely to recount this fact is jarring.”
