The giant, spherical climate denier

The earth is lying:

Clitantic scientists trapped in Antarctic ice claim expanding sea ice caused by ‘global warming’ – But data and studies refute claims.

You’d think these scienticians would be aware of the record expansion of Antarctic sea ice in the last few years, but “nope” springs eternal:

(Chris) Turney (a professor of climate change at Australia’s University of New South Wales) explained that “climate change may have prompted the iceberg to shatter and float into the previously open sea where the mostly Australian team finds itself stranded.”

Yeah, that’s the ticket: An iceberg corralled the vessel, and then froze the open sea for miles around it into an impenetrable, contiguous, solid mass of ice so thick that icebreakers couldn’t reach the ship…because of global warming.
It’s cold out there, but it’s a fun cold.

  1. Chris Turney is an incompetent and ignoramus. I did quite a lot of work with icebergs (outside of the university)
back in the early `80s, in connection with the Hibernia development, and one thing I can tell you is that
icebergs are tough. Their microstructure, with embedded bubbles, is resistant to crack propagation.
Anybody with any knowledge of things polar would be aware of that, and would be aware of experiments on
bench blasting icebergs in the late 70s {dates not certain]. You can consult my article in World Oil,
1981 [February? – Lewis and Benedict] for an introduction to the subject. Also later work by a colleague
(Gammon et al.) as well as ongoing work at the NRC in St. John’s (R. Gagnon and others). Bob did some very
nice work on ice mechanical strength measurements, I must say.
I may also say that I have seen icebergs break up in the late spring or early summer and they don’t
    f*cking shatter

Anyway, i will repeat: Chris Turney s an incompetent and an ignoramus.

  2. And glaciers move to the sea, then calve icebergs, not because it’s warmer. They do it because of snow buildup that compresses the ice deep below, makes it plastic, and then flow. If the glaciers are moving faster it’s because there’s more snow, not because it’s getting warmer!

  3. Delightfully the silly man is now admitting in the Guardian that climate change did not actually have any thing to do with their ship being trapped.
Of course he is not acknowledging the record Antarctic ice or anything; just walking back the dumbest of his organization’s claims.
Bet he is popular with the real scientists who are not being resupplied due to the diversion caused by his wee fiasco.

  4. “Anyway, i will repeat: Chris Turney s an incompetent and an ignoramus.”
I agree. But at least he knew enough to get funding for his circle jerk, it couldn’t be 99 or 101 years after Mawson.

  5. Unfortunately the lamestream media will regurgitate this drivel, and most of the public will eat it up.

  6. Just an aside to the post.
The daring “Antartic expeditioners” will be leaving a legacy.
” A total of 800 kauri trees will be planted which during the first 50 years of their life will offset more than the total carbon used to fuel the AAE… Discussions are also taking place to investigate if an iconic Australian species could also be used to help offset emissions in a similar way to the kauri and we hope to provide more details shortly.”
I’m not a scientist, or even a scientician, but they should have chopped down 800 trees. That might have made the difference between being home on schedule and being stuck on an icebreaker with working people who despise you.

  7. Wow, on their website you can find the price of this journey.
This trip wil set you back a minimum of $17,000 per person for a ‘superior ‘ berth. A ‘mini-suite’ went for $19,000 per person.
” The prices quoted above includes all onboard ship accommodation
and full catering, but does not include laundry, drinks, international flights or personal insurance.” I presume Australian dollars.
The cruise started out on Dec.7th and they will be back on the 4th of January.
hehe …. A bunch of rich tourists, running late, on a Chinese icebreaker. On the bright side, they can get their laundry done cheap. What could possibly go wrong?

  8. Yup, the Mother goddess encircled the Global warmish as intruders. Nature is now a deity.
Our Planet now thinks according to the “scientific” consensus.
Personally I,m sick to death of these green religion nuts.
The lies come ever thicker as panic sets in when their bogus models turn out to be an accident of embarrassment.

The sea didn’t freeze. The wind blew the ice up against the land and compacted it. When the wind changes, the ice will loosen and be blown away from the land. That’s why the Russian crew are staying put on their boat – they expect to make their own way out in time.
The extra ice is “climate” (Antarctica getting colder), the trapping of the ship since Christmas Eve is “weather” (wind moving the ice). All this has been explained on Watts up With That, and Anthony Watts has even been involved in providing a wind forecast for the trapped vessel.
The sea won’t freeze in the permanent daylight at the height of the southern summer. Don’t hand the warmenists a bat with which to beat you.

  10. In some levels this incident is instructive..
We now have a specific measure on the warmies statements.. We can use the measurement of how thick and far the ice is, to see when the meme changes from glow-bull warming and rolls into climate change..
Essentially, it the defining moment when their ass is in so much trouble, the lie modifies..
I’m sure Kate can come up with a suitible name for this point in time..

  11. Some may have noticed that a common thread that runs through warmist
“sky is falling” scenarios is that “the proof” is mostly found in places
that are extremely difficult to access by ordinary scheduled transportation.
This is very helpful in controlling the message and making sure embarrassing
questions from unbelievers don’t get any play.

  12. A truly great post — akin to those of cgh and Loki, in their respective fields. Thank you very much for sharing that information.
Leaving aside politics for a moment, I happen to understand your professional and informed disgust with, er, Dr. Turney: I’ve seen it many, many times in my life — somebody, from a tangentially related field or circumstance, making off-the-reserve comments (spinning, really) on a subject about which they know absolutely nothing, perhaps even less than nothing, thinking that by dint of their so-called “experience, credentials and qualifications” they can cover their exposure, which they can’t.
Permit me, if you would, to explain the litmus test, as I see it as a layman with no information other than the “news” reports I have read in respect of this situation: suppose for a moment that you are wrong and Mr. Turney is right about the “shattering”. What? The shattering just happened on December 23rd, or 17th, or 1st, or something, unbeknownst to him? At the end of the day, we’re talking about massive objects, with no propulsion system of their own, aligning themselves, on account of inherently uncertain but generally predictable wind patterns and ocean currents, in such a precise fashion as to trap not only his ship but another. As a layman, that seems highly improbable to me.
And if he had known in advance that that had happened, why would he have led his expedition into such danger? That would be criminal, actually — something along the lines of reckless endangerment of human life, on a transnational basis.
His ready-made explanation, provided on-the-spot as it was without on-the-spot instrumentation or other means to confirm it, suggests the latter. In which case he should be arrested and charged immediately upon his return to his home port.
As a man of a university, which you have disclosed to us that you are, what would you have done, in the same circumstance? Maybe expressed a little contrition here and there? Maybe taken a step back and said, “Hmm, I’ll need to think on it awhile. In the meantime, I’m a bit concerned about my shipmates, and about those of other ships who are trying to rescue us.” Which you would have done, as we know.
On the other hand, Preston Manning, for whom I was too dumb not to vote for, introduced me to a great saying: “When you’re in a hole and you want to get out, the first thing you do is quit digging” — the first rule of holes, apparently.
“Chris Turney’s an incompetent and an ignoramus.” And maybe even a criminal. I hope everybody gets home safely.

  13. There will be no restitution, no repayment of squandered taxpayers money, no contrition, no admitting of stupidity, gullibility or least of all an apology. It is inbred in these inbreds that they know far more than everyone else, their upbringing/ school systems told them that, they have self esteem as they steam along on other peoples money. This has been the biggest scam in the history of mankind, a lot of inside scamsters knew it, Fat Al, Binwander Panchuri, Suzooker Turnly Strong etal, then they set about to mold the pathetic leftie media into running the scare stories while they lobbied stupid politicians and shazam, money flowed int otheir pockets. The medias job has been to quickly get a podium in front of any fool or scammer they could find to keep this gravy train going, it is up to the intelligent of this world to stop the insanity before they start, Suzookerishly, rounding up and jailing the deniers. Think of the hospitals/research into cancer/diseases etc that could have been funded with the amount of money, this modern day homage to the idiot gods, has cost our economys. Stop consuming the product of the media outlets that prop this scam up, call your dullard politicians who help fund this bull.

  14. F.A. Hayek referred to “the pretence of knowledge” that is prevalent among those who would seek to engage in social engineering of the affairs of man.

  15. Climate scientists / activists are like alcoholics.. Addiction to the cause/substance makes them the worst kind of liars.. The moment you turn your back to them they reach for the bottle/propaganda because its all they know..

  16. Think..
What 2 trillion dollars invested in clean carbon / nuclear energy and wildlife conservation would have done for the real environment..
They borrowed almost every penny so the public wouldn’t notice any tax increase.. Keeping a uninterrupted flow of money..
Now we are deeply in debt with no ability to spend or borrow on the REAL problems that we face like the flimsy power delivery grid.. They politicized the very basics of modern life for their own benefit and how we are in a very bad place..
Expect your wage to stay the same while your hydro bill doubles.. Hide that if you can!

  17. Thanks John Lewis, nice to hear an informed point of view.
I am a little confused by the ever changing story from the turkey, Who called Mayday?
    Or was it Pan Pan?
We are now told that there was “never any danger” to ship and passenger.
Yet if I willfully refuse to respond to a distress call in canadian waters, I face criminal charges.
Are there criminal charges for falsely calling high seas emergency?
My point here, is if I abandoned what I was doing, rushed to the rescue of someone here on Great Slave Lake, only to find out that they called Mayday cause their passengers needed a convenient ride back to town…
They might not enjoy the experience.

  18. Consensus: old Onandaga word meaning “when squaw-men all agree to stop thinking”.

  19. Yes, that’s right. All of those science bodies are wrong on this, and you guys have it right because you look out your windows and believe the shills paid by the oil industry. #freethinkin’

  20. Calving of a glacier is different from ‘shattering’ of an iceberg.
Maybe you should stick to writing…er…on second thought, maybe you should just go back to watching t.v. or something else gearing more to your intellect.
    Cheers

“What you are witnessing here is not shattering. It’s er… um… shmattering, which is different.”
Your first sentence is correct – what we are witnessing is bits falling off the end of a glacier into the sea (calving). Your second sentence, a feeble attempt at snark, inadvertently confirms the difference.
Iceberg breakage is a constant and well studied seasonal feature of the polar regions, however Turney’s notion of giant icebergs suddenly shattering into a sea full of little pieces that unexpectedly get blown around his expedition is at odds with reality. The fact is that this vast area of sea ice was already known to the Russian captain, and as soon as he got word of the wind change he called the “scientists” back to the ship in good time for an orderly exit. Unfortunately they dallied with their “experiments” and trapped themselves. We know all this from their own internet logs.
The sea ice extent around the whole of Antarctica, except the relatively tiny western peninsula, is well above average – indeed near record levels. The temperature of the whole of Antarctica, again with the exception of the western peninsula, has been largely stable for decades, with a slight lowering trend. You can see this for yourself direct from the scientists:
    http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/images/daily_images/S_stddev_timeseries.png
But why bother looking at that and then discussing it when you can just throw a little ineffective barb and run away?
