Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

It is clear that Ford is too f&$#ed up to do the right thing. Looks like he will be taking the city down with him. What a fool.
Agree Robert.
Just about brought up my lunch while listening to CBC on the ride home.
Ontario Premier Wynne is ‘concerned’ that the city of Toronto is not running well due to Ford’s issues.
Silly me…I thought the interviewer was going to ask her if she thinks Ontario is ‘running’ well….
Still better than Milller.
Heck, he now qualifies to run for US president!
Rule #1 in any potential PR disaster: Admit any wrongdoing, and accept responsibility.
Look at Watergate. It was, as many said, a 3rd rate burglary, and totally unneeded, as Nixon was going to crush McGovern. If Nixon had stood up and said “These guys worked for me. They exceeded their authority in their zeal, and they broke the law. I apologize to everyone, and will ensure it won’t happen again”, everyone would have forgotten about it.
But he didn’t – he tried to cover it up, tried to destroy evidence, and eventually, obstructed justice. That’s why he was – rightfully, IMHO – impeached. (It’s too bad; he was a very good President except for that – well, and Agnew – but he broke the law.)
Ford has lied over and over. I defended the guy as innocent until proven guilty, said he was doing a good job, and that he was the victim of a witch hunt. Now, he’s admitted to being drunk at functions, and smoking crack. I feel like a fool for taking his side. That’s why he won’t get re-elected. Everyone will forgive someone a foible or two, particularly victimless ones. No one will forgive him for lying over and over.
“The Lefties should have a hard time with this, after all they’re the idiots who push for safe injection sites for users of illegal drugs rather than getting them help to get off them.”
Actually, safe injection sites are one of the pathways to getting clean and sober. But most importantly we don’t vote for people who have substance abuse problems to be mayor.
Conservative voters, on the other hand, have no problem with lying, drunk, crack fiends who consort with gangs running Canada’s largest city.
“BUT BUT BUT Chrétien! Ted Kennedy! Gas plant!”
Here are a few questions for the mayor: Did you ever drive while either drunk or high on crack, or both? Did you coach children while high on crack or drunk, or both? Do you get drunk or use crack or both in front of your own children? Who did you get your crack from? Who have you “used” with? Have you sold or given crack or booze to minors, or anyone for that matter?
And the big one: Have you signed anything in your capacity as mayor while drunk or high on crack, or both?
Gee, a politician did something bad. How shocking.
Tell you what, all you gloating Lefties. At least Big Rob did something bad TO HIMSELF instead of doing it to -me-. Or worse, some defenseless little kid.
Compare and contrast with Liberal darlings George “Freakshow” Smitherman, the Shiny Pony, or pick your favorite Liberal.
My county out here is plastered in several billion dollars worth of giant fans thanks to Dalton McGuinty, Liberal. Good ol’ Dalton is famous for not smoking crack, but famous as well for wasting two billion bucks on NOT building gas generation plants. I’m paying the owners of said giant fans to NOT produce electricity, the same as I’m paying TransCanada Pipeline for NOT building those generator stations. I’m paying half my income for it. Joke is, so are you. You imbeciles.
Ford will quit, I’m sure. Or just end up in the hospital, that’s more likely. When they finally put in Olivia Chow or whatever other psychotic Lefty they want for Toronto mayor, your taxes are going to climb to 60% of your income. Maybe more. Could go to 70%. Its possible. That’s what they did in France, right?
Then you will whine, and I will laugh. Then I will ask you if you miss Rob Ford and his tax cutting policies. Then I will laugh more, and ask if the crack smoking seems that bad compared to a 70% tax rate. Then I will laugh so hard I fall on the floor.
Because you guys are just that stupid.
I fixed your comment.
This story has been just too f*cking funny to follow recently.
I’m not talking Trudeau himself, I am talking how desperate for a REAL liberal/socialist the partisan left is that ANYONE could support this lying, entitled, self-absorbed, pot-smoking, sack of sh*t keeping his job.
Maybe Trudeau could be able to be an effective liberal/socialist by taxing Canadians more and more because, as PM of Canada, his loyalties would be stolen from his constituents and instead dedicated to a political party.
Think about it.
I’m torn on Ford. On the one hand the left are hypocrites. To them it’s just fine if Shiny Pony smokes weed but it’s a crime if Ford used crack. Screw the left.
But on the other hand Ford needs to get his act together. Cut the endless bullshit statements. Go to the gym. Lose some weight. Put this nonsense behind him. Time to remake his image quickly or his political career is toast.
In my view he is hanging on by a thread at this point, and some of it is unfortunately his own doing.
Kevin; Very well stated, but the problem is your last line. Liberal/socialist politicians lie over and over and over and over and over again and the MSM and their addled followers never, ever, ever, ever, ever(like John, LAS and others that frequent this side) stop supporting them. They are delusional and hate anything and anyone which has a conservative stance/notion.
That is the problem. Justin Trudeau smokes pot and they say it isn’t an issue. Chretien lies and steals hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money and its not a big deal. They will never, ever, ever, ever, ever quit supporting the liars that make up the liberal/socialist side of the political spectrum. Of course they expect us to quit supporting conservatives who act likewise, but their idols are gods to them – thus untouchable.
I agree Ford’s actions are a disappointment. He should seek help for his drug issues, finish his term and then return to life as a regular citizen (hopefully clean).
Makes me want to break out in song.
“in a drunken stupor”…yes I think R Ford has a bit of a drinking problem and lost his judgment and tried crack, just to be one of them, so what’s the big deal, he’s head and shoulders above the last, “spend like a drunken sailor”, lefty. The unions will try their best to get him out now, “cept his ratings are rising:-))))
Ron Corbett on CFRA is really, really pissed-off today.
Care to comment on a more relevant analog John? Like say London Mayor Joe Fontana, who has actually been charged with criminal offenses.
The self same hypocritical media screaming for Ford’s head are the same ones that tell us that Safe Injection sites are productive and good for society. I can’t take anymore of their upside down loopy lying logic, a liberal admits to doing illegal drugs ala Justin but he’s cannonized as a revolutionary progressive Ford does the same thing and they want to lynch him.
Why, the left does it all the time and gets away with it.
Where the elite , both political with its vampire social set don’t get it, is that Ford is the vengeance of the Working people. Who are fed up with the looting of their money for insane causes no one believe but the cocooned monied left.
As for the press , who believes them any more?
They have been so one sided their hypocracy is like a rank skunk smell in a perfume salon. One day crying for addicts, perverts, serial killers, gay terrorists for shooting galleries or mercy. The next going into spasms of hate over people who only want tax breaks.
It has worn thin even on the nerves of the none voter.
The hysteria being displayed , while Collectivist Icons are sheltered has become so obvious, its like a den of thieves.
Ford may have a lousy private life( so did Ralph Klien) except he’s a good Mayor not looting the populace like the socialists.
The fact it drives the Establishment Aristocrates nuts only makes people like him better.
Well said Sporty. I agree.
Nixon was not impeached. He resigned. He would have been impeached if he had not. (Only two presidents have been impeached, Andrew Johnson and Clinton.)
And he was a lousy president for many reasons besides Watergate. (His economic polices were disastrous.)
John, you should be more sympathetic. Clearly Ford is a sick man. Let’s have some compassion here.
“BUT BUT BUT Chrétien! Ted Kennedy! Gas plant!”
—————–
And Layton and an Asian “massage parlour” and……….Michael Bryant and “bicycle mishaps”……..and Benjamin Levin and “cinema”……….
You snivelling leftards always squealing about moral equivalency make me laugh harder every time you try.
This makes me angry. My taxes are going to go through the roof when Olivia Chow gets in there.
I’ve defended Ford, but c’mon man, what the hell are you smoking crack for?
“John, you should be more sympathetic. Clearly Ford is a sick man. Let’s have some compassion here.”
Yes. I’m just a big intolerant meany. What with my belief that the mayor of Canada’s biggest city shouldn’t be out smoking crack, hanging with gangsters and lying about it.
I hope Rob Ford gets the help he needs… but he can’t be mayor. He has zero credibility.
Excellent, Rob Ford is starting his transition to become a Liberal?
If this is the worst he has done, whats the big deal.
So he drinks, does drugs and tries to drive himself home.
All he is missing is openly carrying a pistol.
My kind of people.
Has the mayor of Toronto been charged with any crime yet?
Or is he still reacting to slander?
Remember mayors do not pass laws over drug use, MP’s do that.
The real pressure Ford is getting to step down comes from conservatives. The left has been shrieking against Ford from the beginning so should be ignored, as always. Trolls on this thread included.
Your logic is absolutely erroneous. Mental health hospitals, for example, are good for society – I hope we can all agree with that. But I think it’s safe to say that someone running for mayor from within the confines of their padded cell would have a poor chance of winning.
So Ford on crack does a better job than any Liberal mediocrity, anywhere, at any level of government. He clearly was very sincere, and ashamed, in his apology. Compare his behavior to the behavior of typical psychos in politics today who get caught, these days. Ford is human.
Unless someone way better comes along, kicking him out would be a shot in the foot.
I think he will be forgiven, and people will ultimately judge him on his record in office.
“I hope Rob Ford gets the help he needs… but he can’t be mayor. He has zero credibility.”
So what credibility does Wynne/Loser have, having been part of the McGuilty government that spent over 1-billion bucks to get two Liberal$ elected — money stolen from Ontario taxpayers — not to mention the millions squandered on e-health and ORNGE? What credibility does Wynne/Loser have, having appointed alleged kiddie-porn child exploiter, Benjamin Levin, as her Deputy Minister of Education from 2004 to 2009 and having him as one of the members of her transition team, then trying to pretend she hardly knew him?
What credibility does Olivia Chow-down have after she and Jack put in for over $1,000,000 of expenses in one year a few years ago, the biggest expense bill of any sitting MPs? What credibility does the late and lamented Jack Layton have after he and Olivia lived in co-op housing when they were making huge salaries and after Jack was found in a Rub-‘n’-Tug establishment and was never charged by the police who escorted him to his bicycle, nor was the incident ever reported in the media until years later when it could do him no damage?
The Leftards have HUGE credibility problems but are fortunate in that their buds, aka lapdogs, in the hyena media give them a pass every time. No such luck for Ford. He’s been in their cross hairs since he ran for mayor. It’s the pile on I strenuously object to, the harassment and the witch hunt I deplore. There’s no level playing field, the deck is stacked — and Bill Blair is part of it.
Police Chief Bill Blair is totally lacking in credibility and needs to step down.
It appears that no one’s coming out of this untarnished.

So any news on the Benjamin Levin case?
/analogy
Churchill guzzeled gin. Didn’t hurt his performance.
I know it’s a big stretch….
I got drunk, and it made me want to smoke crack.
I smoked crack, and it made me want to watch the CBC.
Horrors!

Your comment “The hyena media”. I like that. Hyenas and jackals would describe some of them. I saw Mayor Ford trying anger control and appearing to laugh off two female reporters. They had trespassed into a closed parking lot. Their high pitched voices assailed Ford.
I know that in Irish mythology there is the Banshee. A female figure that appears when there is a smell of death or violence to an individual.
Surely the public must see just what sociopaths some of the media are.
I am digging this thread.
Toronto has a substance abusing mayor who consorts with gangsters and the issue is safe injection sites ?
The reality rejection is strong is this one. Keep it up.
South of the border the Dems win Virginia because Cuccinelli is a RINO?
This craziness is paying off at the ballot box.
One thing which I’m finding myself increasingly intolerant of is the neo-puritanism that seems to be infecting society. Curiously, much of this neo-puritanism is being pushed by Conservatives which, given their tragic view of human existence requires some real cognitive contortions to justify. Humans get drunk, do stupid things, get stoned, have affairs, react irrationally to certain life stresses and in general behave like imperfect humans. The multiple foibles of human existence sink some people but, for the majority of the population, they don’t interfere with their competence in their particular area of expertise.
There’s this asinine notion that ingestion of any psychoactive drug will have detrimental effects on people; both in terms of their performance at a particular task and their health. If drugs are so deleterious to human performance, then one wonders why various athletic organizations have thousands of “performance enhancing” drugs on their proscribed lists and athletes are no exception to the modern technique of determining a persons social worth through the quality of their urine. There was a time when number of cords of wood chopped in a day, numbers of original inventions/year or literary output during ones career were measures of people rather than ensuring that their urine composition met the standards of perfection that a neo-puritan society requires.
Hitler was a vegetarian, militant non-smoker and a strict teetotaler yet Germany was defeated by a coalition consisting in large part of the cigar chomping hard drinking Churchill and the even harder drinking Stalin. While Churchill had a masterful command of the English language when sober, I’m sure that some of his best writing was performed after imbibing heavily of scotch and it was Churchill’s stirring rhetoric that kept up the spirits of the British people in the first part of WWII.
So when it comes to Rob Ford, I have little interest in what he does in his private life but I do have a concern regarding his competency as mayor. In his mayoral role, he appears to have been far more financially competent than the moonbats that preceded him. Ralph Kline was a heavy drinker as well and, early in his career would be quite happy to sit in one of the local Calgary taverns and knock back pints with members of the public. This accessibility, being “just one of the guys” and his clear competence as premier of Alberta is the primary reason he got re-elected handily. He seemed to rapidly go downhill once he was forced to quit drinking for the simple act of ranting at the inhabitants of a shelter about the desirability of them getting jobs. Just because he was drunk when he chose to do this doesn’t affect the veracity of his message.
I won’t go into detail about the neuropharmacology of alcohol save that it’s an NMDA receptor antagonist and, as a result of prolonged NMDA receptor blockade, NMDA receptor numbers increase on neurons. This excess of NMDA receptors is responsible for the DT’s in alcoholics who are suddenly deprived of alcohol, but a small increase in NMDA receptor numbers increases intelligence. Rats which have been bred to express larger numbers of NMDA receptors are more intelligent than rats which have smaller NMDA receptor numbers. The right amount of alcohol should, in theory, increase intelligence in humans. It’s interesting that the most intellectually prolific societies are all ones in which alcohol is freely available and the most backward societies are the muslim ones which proscribe alcohol. One of the common nightmares I have is muslims giving up their ban on alcohol and suddenly having their IQ increase by 20+ points. Then they’d be much harder to defeat as they would have other military options rather than relying solely on their female suicide bomb carrier factories.
Similar considerations hold for the majority of popular psychoactives where there’s little difference in performance, or improved performance with an upside down U shaped curve when one plots performance vs drug dose. Such effects are exceedingly individual and, for someone that has anxiety alcohol or a benzodiazepine will improve performance. For those who have a problem with either concentration of fatigue, a stimulant will improve performance. Cocaine and amphetamines have virtually the same concentration enhancing effects except amphetamines have far longer durations of action than cocaine. The US air force considers it completely appropriate to feed its fighter pilots amphetamines on long missions. In a pinch, cocaine would suffice but snorting coke in a flight suit would be somewhat of a challenge.
Humans aren’t perfect yet they are expected to be. Rather than accept the fact that people make mistakes, there’s a tendency when the individual who makes a mistake has urine which not socially acceptable, then whatever psychoactive drug metabolites within that imperfect urine specimen are blamed for the mistake. The convoluted logic involved in casting blame on various molecules has as much validity as blaming guns for killing people; a truly rational society would determine where on the individual dose/response curve for a drug an individual was located and, only if their serum drug concentrations were in the detrimental range could one make valid assumptions about pharmacologic influences on an individuals mistake. Even though the low-order non-linearities in such calculations are trivial, they are far beyond the capabilities of the minds of the neo-puritans.
So Conservative neo-puritans, make up your minds: do you want an imperfect human who happens to demonstrate considerable competency in a certain role with all of the flaws that come with being human or do you want a barely competent human that can produce socially acceptable urine samples at any time of the day or night?
I would rather wall off the city like Escape from New York, throw in a baseball bat and a sword and let the best “man” win.
Last man, sorry humanoid to be politically correct, standing, rules the city.
This is the only real Justice the rest of Canada can hope for now without getting dragged into a future civil war.
“You guys really shouldn’t vote. Or use sharp objects. Or be in possession of matches.” — John @ 1:44p.m.
Sadly, John forgot to mention another one of his very good ideas from the Walter Duranty school: we shouldn’t buy spray paint, either, just in the off chance we had the urge to go around painting backward swastikas on synagogues. But overall, his statement is a convenient summary of his attitude toward those with whom he disagrees, and it’s pretty much somewhere on the same continuum as Soviet authorities putting Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in a psychiatric hospital on account of his views. That worked well for the CPSU, and I wish John a similar level of success.
Leaving all that aside for a moment, your comment implicitly asks the right question: what is/are the appropriate standard(s), CONSISTENTLY APPLIED TO ALL ELECTED OFFICIALS, for removal from office other than by defeat at the polls? Abuse of the powers of office, alleged or proven? Electoral fraud, alleged or proven? Electoral financing fraud, alleged or proven? Appropriation of public funds for personal gain, alleged or proven? Being convicted, while in office, of a serious offence? Admitting to, or lying about, having committed an unprosecuted criminal act while in office? Admitted, but clinically undocumented substance use or abuse? Hostile coverage from hostile news organizations? The ethical standards of those with whom you are or have been associated? Ethical or judgment lapses on the part of those in your employ, whether redressed or not? What?
Some of these things are relatively clear, even today, in an era of debased standards, forgotten traditions and “anything goes”, but it seems completely disingenuous to me that anyone would arbitrarily posit a standard of judgment in respect of one elected politician, and then summarily ignore it in the case of another, particularly when the motivation is ideologically-driven. Such multi-layered double-standards are very corrosive of civil discourse.
Nope. I would appear that there’s a media blackout on him, probably in response to Clayton Ruby’s veiled threat back in July: “I intend to work very hard to see that he shall be innocent.” Ruby is Levin’s lawyer.
Levin was to be back in court on August 8 and there appears to be nothing in the media about this. If you Google Benjamin Levin you see the usual, Linked in, OISE, items, etc. You have to Google Benjamin Levin, Toronto Star to read the articles they wrote in July, at the time of his arrest, the see that there’s an alleged kiddie-po*n issue attached to his name.
None of this lack of information is surprising. As Clayton Ruby put it, Levin has “status in the community,” as does Ruby himself, which would seem to preclude anything negative being reported in the lapdog media about this ongoing scandal.
If anyone with more advanced Google skills can unearth anything on Levin, that would be great. Discovering more information would be a public service. Levin should be a household name as a warning to parents.
Loki, an excellent comment. (One quibble: Churchill, to all reports, drank brandy, not Scotch.) I agree with you that I find many Tories hypocritical about altered states of consciousness. Booze is OK, but pot is bad, BAD, BAD!. Here in Toronto, I know many people who vote Tory, have respectable jobs (lawyers, doctors, policemen even), and who enjoy a puff or two on the weekend.
I perhaps should have expanded on my earlier comment: The left will never forgive Ford for the sin of being conservative. That was a given, no matter if he had never touched booze or crack. It’s many on the right who will find it difficult to forgive him, not for using the drugs, but for lying to us about it. He has broken faith with us, and that requires some real penance, not a couple of “I’m sorry”‘s. If he mans up, gets help, and comes back clean, then many of us would give him another chance, but if he thinks he can just skate, I’m worried. He’ll lose a big chunk, but not all, of his base, split the right vote, and we’ll end up with O. Chow-chow as mayor.
Rob Ford on crack is not immediately as obviously dangerous to Toronto as a Chow-chow mayor.
Good posts here at the end of the thread
What is a sane response from a conservative when our ‘moral and intellectual superiors’, to use Kate’s words, have a person on the chopping block that we happen to like?
Gray in his comment (1:32 am) made a couple of good points, although I can’t be sure that he understood or intended them. (I’d like to think so.)
Toronto was going to have “a substance abusing mayor who consorts with gangsters” in any event. They elected the one who was less dangerous and who would do the job better.
If they make the mistake of insisting that Ford must go because he’s not perfect, then the result is exactly what you see in Virginia – the worse candidate wins because the better one isn’t perfect. That’s insane.
Jack Layton present as a customer during a massage parlor raid by the cops, yet he’s considered a saint. Same goes for sex addict Suzuki who requests female body guards. Ralph Klein, past Premiere of AB, had a drinking problem, yet he turned AB completely around-from a province with a large deficit to a province with a huge public savings account that continues to support ON financially to this day. What’s your point?
