  1. So why can’t the Great One just hand his birth certificate over to a newspaper? I mean his complete Birth Certificate, not the short form.

  2. I say the Canadian Revenue Service should audit his income for back taxes going back 7 years, have him file income tax returns for the last 5 years, and not let him rescind his citizenship until it’s all squared away and he has paid $450 CAD to make it official. Fair is fair.

  3. 1. Except under specific circumstances (i.e., born in Canada while your parents are diplomats here), if you were born in Canada, you’re a Canadian citizen by birth. So Cruz is Canadian.
    2. An act of renunciation means absolutely nothing unless Canada chooses to recognize it. Canada could simply state: “Renounce your citizenship as many times as you like, you’re still a Canadian citizen.” More than a few Iranian-Americans have fallen into this trap.
(I doubt Canada cares much about Cruz though. I certainly don’t.)

  4. Kate wins the thread…………
But maybe he should stay. We don’t have any REAL Conservatives left in Ottawa. Oh, they talk a good game, but their actions say ‘mushy middle’.
The CBC still exists every bit as strong as ever, the government has grown by 18%, and they’re still running deficits, while representing Ottawa to us, instead of us to Ottawa. And we have Jim Flaherty running around as the nanny state finance minister…..
What happened to the “fiscal conservative” Is that a dirty word in Canada, or did their backbones melt in the towers of power? Yes, they have brought the military back, no problems from here, but, cut the funding elsewhere, from the large, obtuse civil service, as a symbol of fiscal courage.
And yeah, the alternatives are much more frightening, but c’mon, there’s a majority, where is the fiscal conservatism. Cruz could show them a thing or two.

  5. Right on DanBC – Maybe things will change following the throne speech this fall – I hope so. I still will not contribute to the (so called) Conservative until long after the CBC is on their own / self supporting / off the public tit.

  6. The ironical part is he was born in Calgary Alberta.
What used to be the most Conservative city in Canada. The most Americanized anyway.
Until Eddy & Redford, this Province was called by Texans; Texas North. How many times have papers described Albertan’s as: ” More American than Americans”
What’s even funnier. Is half the population is American descended from settlers.
I really don’t care what he does. I just get a chuckle from it.

  7. This is only an issue for those who are terrified of him (and how contemptuous of Canadians they are!).
It’s a matter for constitutional lawyers (both sides of the border).
Cruz for PM. Or Steyn. I’m good for either.

  8. Unlike the Americians, who tax based on citizenship as well as residency, we only tax based on residency. So he’s free and clear.
