But “is considering a form of mandatory carriage applicable to all Canadian All- News Services, that would include Sun.”
More detail;
The decision also lays out a proposal for a new category of licences for Canadian all-news channels. It’s asking for public comment now on a proposed framework that includes forcing distributors to offer all Canadian national news services, Canadian news services in close proximity in their channel lineup, as well as offering national news services in a package and on a standalone basis.
So while Sun News Network will not get the mandatory carriage order it sought, the CRTC has put forward a streamlined process to rewrite the rules for Sun News and its competitors.
Meanwhile…
APTN renewed. Race based programming and 80's american movies are culturally valuable. Conservative viewpoints aren't. What a load, #crtc.

Update: Paul Wells thinks there’s more sunshine than darkness to be found in the decision.

What you said.
Let the consumer decide, not the CRTC which has more than proven its “worth”.
Government bureaucrats can sometimes be more useless than tits on a man.
My question would be. Is there not anyone on here that did NOT see this coming from a Trudeau era institution?
Just think we can all be comforted in knowing we are well protected in our 40% socialist Canadian content gulag, for good.
Not surprised about the CRTC using its leverage to stifle opposing views.
I suppose I’d get more worked up about it, but I’ve not had a cable subscription for 8 years. Why play their game? Just walk away.
Everybody hates the CRTC, but aren’t the conservatives in government? Can they not effect change? Or, are they gutless, and getting fat off you and me, while trying to appease Morontario?
Why does James Moore defend the CBC?
Why do the Conservatives prevent Potash Corp from being sold (a monopoly), protect Air Canada for its monopolistic (gouging) practices, from any competition, but views Rogers/Bell/Telus as “uncompetitive”, while their friends at Shaw remain very quiet, and untouched?
I would swear the Liberals were still running the Canadian government, that, or the body snatchers have perfected their takeover in Ottawa.
In any event, our government has lost its way. They are now representing the bureaucracy to us, the taxpayers, rather than the other way around.
Reform is but a distant memory. And the alternatives are worse.
BINGO Max! In a nutshell, IMO.
Reelmenfish – fabulous comment:
‘Disappointed, however not surprised, in the least. Having listened the CRTC elitist snots during the hearing and the condescending remarks spewed by the Chairman, it was apparent the ruling today would be a foregone conclusion.’

Add a poopy pants at the end of the table and you have the CRTC personified.
“…SunTV does not receive $1.1 Billion per year in tax payer subsidies, unlike the CBC. SunTV news does not receive any government subsidies-all the station asked for was mandatory carriage as a Canadian content based channel…”
Yup. I know.
You didn’t finish your thought. You left out “..and we should all just stay home next election, not bother voting for the best government we have had in 25 years and let Trudeau run things.”
It is no wonder conservative parties fall apart so fast when such purity is constantly demanded. Ever heard of pragmatism? Do you want to see more changes with a second CPC majority, or are you happy with what we have gotten so far and are ready to throw in the towel? C’mon, at least give them a chance to get re-elected. Don’t forget that government is supposed to represent everyone, not just the base. Too partisan and you’re out on your arse and riding the pine for at least 12 years.
I don’t watch ANY broadcast TV. It’s inane propaganda for the proletariat. All ‘news’ is nothing more than an entertainment product edited to attract the demographic the advertisers wish to reach. I have much better options for news and information and the limited time I have available for video entertainment.
I have e-mailed Sun News numerous times. I will pay good money for a Sun TV broadcast stream. I’ve abandon cable and get my television experience through other means.
There’s a simple answer to all your questions Dan: Harper really really likes big government and hates freedom as do his toadies. Ignore the missing-chromosome PMO Palace Guard. Those peoplea are disease.
I honestly don’t give a rat’s ass about people arguing about where to put the deck chairs on the titanic. Seriously Sun should focus on an online business. Partner with Beck and screw tv altogether. I’d pay for that. Screw government regulations.
Which party do you vote for, LAS?
Whoever’s policies fit my view best and have a chance of delivering them. Provincially, that means WildRose. Federally, probably the Liberals but that’s not fixed and if they blow it I’ll just vote Libertarian.
Seriously Sun should focus on an online business. Partner with Beck
Fun fact: Beck is making more money now after Fox dumped him than he did with Fox.
Jamie and LAS, throwing the baby out with the bath water is a bad idea.
22cekmL-ass’ mother votes for himhat2ry
Yeah, Noel I have MTS TV in Manitoba and they don’t offer SunTV.
We also get RT and al jeerzeera as well as the Crappy News Network and the Hysterical Ladies Network but not Fox.
I’d pay five bucks to get SNN and Fox and another five to not get the others.
I can switch to Shaw but I really really hate Shaw.
Hey, MTS!
I want my I want my I want my SunTV!
I think SNN’s request for mandatory carriage was wrong because I don’t think any channel should be mandatory.
And this ruling is good if it opens the door to unbundling.
The only thing that should be mandatory is carriage.
But, don’t worry, the a la carte universe is coming sooner than you think.
And the CRTC won’t be able to do anything to stop it.
Although, things like Netflix aren’t the answer yet, either.
I have a Sony internet TV with a Netflix portal.
I tried to sign up for a free trial and they require a credit card number.
Sorry, I would do anything for love but I won’t do that.
As an aside, I catch the wife and kids watching AFV on cable and I get mad.
Why are you watching that when they are all on the youtube portal on our TV?
Old habits are hard to break.
There’s no baby but this government deserves to be aborted.
I have Telus TV and get SNN as part of my basic package
Perhaps a bad time to make this application to the CRTC, after all, SNN has been reporting a lot of facts about Justin Trudeau, some not too helpful to his aspirations to become Prime Minister.
Maybe it’s time for the CRTC to be aired out.
Please explain wallyj:
Are those ‘consultants’ or the actual CRTC decision makers?
One would like to think that the CRTC should be apolitical, just as we assume that Elections Canada is apolitical and unbiased…yes, I’m being silly.
CBC IS AFRAID OF COMPETITION.. afraid that they will loose viewers and the $1.1 billions yearly.
If CBC was that great there is no reason why they cannot be privatized and work hard.
Canadians shop around stores to find the best buy for their buck why not with television news stations.
I thought SDA got results.
“Why do the Conservatives… protect Air Canada for its monopolistic (gouging) practices, from any competition…”
I’m cynical enough to believe that the feds will never let Air Canada die because the only alternative, Westjet, doesn’t offer first or business class.
There’s no way politicians are going to shuttle back and forth to their ridings in Coach.
