At the risk of putting words in Black Mamba’s mouth (I generally try to avoid the mouths of mambas of either color), the point is that men have a larger standard deviation around their mean achievement, intelligence, etc. than do women, so that we end up with Mozart, Bach, Aeschylus, Shakespeare, Rembrandt, etc., for men, but also Charles Manson, Adolf Hitler, etc. There are no important female composers (don’t bother me with Hildegard von Bingen), and, to the best of my knowledge, far fewer (perhaps no) female mass murderers.

    I’d suggest that if men could get pregnant, women would have become extinct before the discovery of fire.

  7. When I was in the army (about 25 years ago) I was issued pistol that had “John Inglis” stamped on the slide. They made quality weapons in that plant that were used , and are still being used around the world.

  9. Yeah them Inglis products have a longevity….due to good design. good workmanship…..
    A little known matter is perhaps the Taliban’s favourite weapon is the Bren Gun…..still the best example of a light machine gun.
    The Bren’s only vice was occasional stoppages due to the rimmed 303Brit round….the Brits and South Africans converted their inventory to 7.62NATO…the orginal chambering of the Czech gun was 7.92 Mauser…a rimless cartridge.
    The Brit guns are maintained in storage and the South African guns are general issue.

The govt just disposed of 40,000 brand new Hi-Powers from war stock within the last couple of years..the Bren is good and reliable, but its role as an LMG was criticized during the day for its inability to spray a burst of fire, as opposed to its being thought of as an accurate ‘tack driver’; one that would place nearly every round from the burst in nearly the exact same location.

I wrote a staff paper while in the army saying that the maintenance problems we had with the pistols (cracked slides and feed ramps on the barrels) could be fixed if we stopped firing super hot smg ammo out of them and went to slightly less powerful pistol rounds. We had only one type of 9 mm ammo and it had to be powerful enough to make an smg cycle. The official response at the time was that we had enough spare pistols to last until the zombie apocalypse, so not a problem. I wold be curious to know if they changed the spec for 9mm ammo when we got new pistols and got rid of the smg.

  13. Hadn’t thought about this topic for a while. Agree that male variability is significantly greater than female variability. WRT music capability that must be due to women having bilateral speech centers whereas men are far more lateralized with speech. In men, the R hemisphere is dedicated to music whereas in women it’s usually a reserve speech area. Women who get left hemispheric frontal strokes often regain speech whereas men are almost always mute afterwards.
    While greater lateralization in speech is found in men compared to women, men are more likely to be ambidextrous than women. What surprised me is the number of men who are equally fast with their left and right hands whereas some women are almost unable to perform fine movements with their left hands.
    Another difference is spatial abilities are greater in men. Also, women seem to allocate much more of their wetware to storing details about people and their relationships whereas men are externally focused.
    Of course these differences obviously come out of the sexual division of labor that came about when hominids first appeared and only disappeared when Marx told the human races they had got it totally wrong a few million years ago. Males are specialized for hunting and killing things and thus there’s the greater upper body strength and superior spatial ability which is very helpful when one wants to throw a spear into a vulnerable area on a saber tooth tiger. What males seem to have is a generalized need to interact with things at a distance; once men evolved beyond the tree branch used as a club they invented spears and archery. A lot of male activities can be viewed as controlling or interacting with things at a distance such as shooting, baseball, soccer, model trains, remote control aircraft and, unfortunately for the modern urban male, use of the remote control to switch channels on the TV without getting off the couch. Most women are bored silly with model trains, ham radio, and model planes and remote controlled vehicles.
    The other male trait is the ability to concentrate intensely on one small aspect of reality to the exclusion of everything else. There are very few female hackers. That same obsessiveness that allows a person to concentrate on coding for days at a time sustained only by the occasional can of pop or package of tacos can be perverted to give people like Jack the Ripper, and other mass murderers. Really, these mass murderers are very misunderstood people as their obsession is a creative act and they should at least be given fine arts degrees for their bold breaking of social taboos in the production of art.

  14. Sort of, but it’s not quite that. Most serial killers don’t seem to have high IQs. Paglia’s point (as I understand it) involves the (occasional) very high male capacity for abstraction and image-making, which is necessarily tied in to creativity.
    BTW I discount Angel of Mercy serial killers, who can be of either sex, and what I think of as girlfriend tagalongs. Think Karla Homolka or Myra Hindley.

    Heh, I guess men really are responsible for menopause…the stories evolutionists make up are laughable. No proof whatsoever, just make up a story or computer model to make it look all scholarly.

  16. Iowa Jim….a quick Google of “female mass/serial killers revealed roughly fifty different hits on the first two pages. Note,there is a difference between mass murders and serial killings. Mass murders are spur of the moment,thrill seeking crimes.Serial killings are very methodical,cunning,and usually against people unknown to the killer,except for some percieved crime/hate towards the killer.

    Thanks for the response. Interestingly enough, there are plenty of good female musicians. If I absolutely had to select one pianist as the greatest around today, I might very well choose Mitsuko Uchida or Angela Hewitt. Among violinists, I greatly admire Sarah Chang and Anne-Sophie Mutter, among others. The list goes on and on, actually.
    Based on considerable reading in the neurosciences, I believe that it’s the left hemisphere that governs musical ability. Musicians who started before the age of seven (that includes me) have a larger area in the left hemisphere’s temporal lobe (same general area as for language production and understanding) activated when listening to music than do non-musicians or musicians who started after age seven.
