Oh, Frack!

Daily Mail;

After examining hundreds of thousands of gas extraction operations, the scientists found only three instances where resulting shocks could be detected by residents above ground.
In contrast, they found other man-made activities, such as mining and waste-disposal, are much more likely to trigger noticeable seismic activity.
Lead researcher Professor Richard Davies from Durham University’s Energy Institute, said the risk of fracking resulting in seismic activity that could be felt on the surface is ‘not significant’.
‘In almost all cases, the seismic events caused by hydraulic fracturing have been undetectable other than by geoscientists. It is also low compared to other man-made triggers,’ he said.
‘By comparison, most fracking-related events release a negligible amount of energy roughly equivalent to or even less than someone jumping off a ladder onto the floor.’

  1. The James Bay Project in Quebec causes far more quakes than all the fracking done on the planet. But nary a word. What a surprise, eh?

  2. Nearly everyday there is a 2.4 earthquake in Princeton, BC caused by mining. I know this because I drove up there to see what was going on. LOL!

  3. I’m extremely curious why fracking causes earthquakes but the sequestration of carbon by pumping it underground, has no ill effects whatsoever.
    For the record I’m a fracking opponent, purely for the surface devastation caused to fragile environments such as the existing Jonah Field or the proposed Karoo development. BS about earthquakes and methane in your tap water makes genuine conservationists ashamed to be associated with those activists. Not that I’m insinuating for a moment that there are no genuine conservationists on the pro-fracking side.

    It would be nice for all of us to live in a park. Alberta has tens of thousands of wells which probably occupy less than 1 % of the land. Other than farming areas, the other 99 % looks like park. The average Albertan makes about $20,000 per year more than his Luddite countrymen and you never hear the end of the bitching.

  5. What scar said.
    Besides, living in cold dark caves and eating somehow does not appeal to me no matter how appealing the green wackjobs try to paint this sort of lifestyle. My 35th great grandfather came to me in a dream and said, “Grandma was always cold”.
