Not a new problem. The solution is to have the cost of the loan charged up-front instead of in incremental payments. E.g.,assuming simple interest of 10% per annum, take out a loan for $100 for one year and receive $90. The remaining $10 is the cost of the loan, charged up front. Not interest, and not running afoul of Sharia law. This is the system used in Muslim countries, IIRC.
Rex, if the amount of $10. is levied on the net proceeds of $90. the effective interest rate is above 10%
Get a job; save up the money and pay as you go — problem solved; your profoundly held religious tenets remain intact. Fat chance of that right?!
Devout Muslims (as well as devout Christians and Jews who follow the old Hebrew doctrines and Christ’s rejection of the money traders) are against charging interest on loaned money. The Christian church had outlawed it as well as many Islamic countries. This is the old Christian, Hebrew and Muslim sin of “usury”.
Whether or not those who claim student loan interest is usurious are “devout” Muslims is another matter altogether. Also this is a matter of separation of church and state where religious dogma cannot infringe of the operation of the state – a state which allows usury within regulated limits. What happened to lefty on this matter- I thought they were the champions of separating the church from the state – or is usury fine with lefty if it is the state making the loan?

Most have no intention of ever repaying this “loan”.
I suppose if some commie turd with access to taxpayers money hears about this there will be calls to avoid any Muslim concerns by simply suggesting that ‘the government’ pay their tuition in full. I bet that wouldn’t be a violation of Sharia law.
when mulims buy houses ,they go to a muslim bank and the bank buys the house..
less any money the future owner gives teh bank..
the bank recovers the lain on a per year basis and charges rent for the house..
this is more expensive then interest…

Just did my Islamic Banking 101 at Wiki University. They only took an interest in no interest banking 50 to 60 years ago. Before that I assume they mumbled under their breath and borrowed from the Jews like everyone else.
If the interest involved in a loan is against their belief, the proper response is to not apply for the loan. End of story.
In the spirit of equality, if I don’t want to treat women as chattel, (and I don’t), I won’t live in an ignorant Muslim nation, (and I won’t). It seems simple to me, I don’t know why they can’t get it.
