  1. it take a lot of effort for lefties to figure out that they themselves are the stupid ones, those us who were raised around animals could have told her as much. Having said that, yesterday I did grocery shoping and left the bags of groceries on the floor while I went and fetching something from the truck. I wanted to see if they would “touch” anything, and yup, 2 bannans got their ends chewed off, the polish sausage was rite next to the bannans, and never touched. And yes, I always share with the hooligans when I eat;-))))

  2. Heh. Mine know better. I have convinced them I can see around corners. Speaking of dogs Kate, many congrats on your win at the Westy. I know it wasn’t you there, but it was one of yours. In a few years you will have established a dynasty.

  3. Unfortunately crap studies like this go on every day in even better universities that that found in the crap-town of Portsmouth. Also unfortunate is the fact that somewhere, somehow taxpayers dollars can be found in such studies. I wonder if the good “doctor” has ever been outside in her life. I mean outside, as in outdoors to see animals in their natural habitat.. At this stage of our devolution it is entirely possible that people her age will never have experienced the outdoors in their entire life, beyond the outdoor stroll from a building to a car and back. This is the only explanation I can give myself for such a blatantly ignorant waste of academic time. The conclusions presented put her in a moronic light as laid out in this story and she may need professional help to adjust to regular society where these findings would be obvious to a 5-year old dog owner.
    The devolution continues.

  4. Oh, for heaven’s sake. The point of this study was to try and determine whether dogs, who can see in the dark, are capable of understanding that humans can’t and therefore can’t see them swiping food even if the human is in the same room and looking in their general direction. That’s a level of abstract thought not possessed by many animals.
Whether this research has any useful purpose is certainly a mystery, but no, it isn’t blindingly obvious.

  5. Well, my dogs were not part of this study. Treats are on the night table, never one taken, must not be able to figure out that we are sleeping and therefore can’t see.
To Kate & Sprite: congratulations on the win. What a beautiful dog. What is the Merrickville, Ontario connection?

  6. Wow. Groundbreaking!
Next thing they’ll be telling us: if an Alpha male wolf grabs some shut-eye beside the bambi he’s just killed and partially eaten, a d-class pup might just decide that the Pack Bully can’t see very well right now, so this is the time to sneak in for a bite.
    Amazing.

  7. Ummm, I’ve had three pieces of kibble sitting on my computer desk for the better part of a month and they have not been stolen, lights on or off, me present or not and with three dogs in the house. All this study did was prove that some people don’t train their dogs.

  8. “…All this study did was prove that some people don’t train their dogs….
Well, you could draw that conclusion….but, some dogs are simply too well fed to bother with stale grub.

I guess it is a little “inside baseball” as most of us around here are seriously into dogs and are already aware of their intelligence and deductive reasoning. Now, if they had done a study that empirically demonstrated a dogs ability to sense/smell what other members of their pack are thinking… Now that would be interesting. But I suppose we shouldn’t poke fun at real science being done. It may seem silly but that is how it should be done.

  10. Actually some dogs understand that humans can see. They understand that when their owner is not looking at them or that their eyes are closed that they can not been seen. That is a very sophisticated thought process.

  11. Evidentiary data point:
At or about 9:00 a.m. ET this morning, just after I had a joking conversation over the phone with my sister, who watched Animal Planet last evening and saw Sprite and Krystal, about this particular post, and while my father was in the bathroom, my little Rottweiler, George, finished off my father’s toast, as best we can tell — it’s not like he’d ever admit wrongdoing. My sister thinks he’s NDP (George, that is).
    Congratulations.
