    Mr. Nagara, a social justice activist from Oakland, Calif., titled his new book, “A is for Activist,” and it is directed toward toddlers “of the 99 percent,” he said in an interview with YES! Magazine.
    “It’s pretty awesome to hear a three-year-old saying ‘union power,’” he said.

  10. The Captcha works fine for me, and I’ve had no problems with it. I’ve been rejected at first pass a couple of times, but got it soon enough.
    “north_of_60” above has provided the best advice.

  13. The Submit button is time-sensitive, so unless you’re writing a particularly short comment, clicking on Submit will just get the message to go back to your comment.
    I write my comment, enter the Captcha number, click on Preview, check out my comment, then enter the new Captcha and click on Submit. It works every time. (I’ve never had trouble reading the letters and numbers.)

    Apparently in an act of revenge Dorner stalked and murdered Quan’s daughter, Monica, 28 and her fiancée Keith Lawrence, 28 in Irving, CA Sunday night. They were both shot multiple times.
    Doner has also vowed to exact revenge on numerous additional officers and their children.
    Doner is a strong advocate of Barack Obama’s gun control policies and has a clear affection for the political Left. Doner heavily plays the race card as he castigates anyone who does not see things his way.”

    I have not yet read Dorner’s Manifesto in detail, but if he is in fact threatening the Nomenklatura [political, police, media, and celebrity]; he has indeed found the Achilles heel of the entire systemic falsehood that our society has become.
    That is blindingly obvious. The threat that something like Dorner represents multiplied even several-fold would be very expensive to counter. There is really no defense against a hostile population that has had enough, short of imposing a police state, complete with curfews, checkpoints, and lots and lots of jails. It would simply be too expensive to implement. And at any rate it would crash the economy.
    Even then suppression might not work. How has it worked for Assad who has absolutely no limits on the brutality he can apply? It’s not working too well.
    The lesson to learn from this is that the greatest threat — most destabilizing thing a country can have — isn’t “assault rifles” or “high powered magazines”. It’s corruption. It’s the loss of legitimacy. It is the withdrawal of what the Chinese called the Mandate of Heaven. Lies are more destabilizing than guns, because it takes only a relatively few determined armed people to effectively threaten the nomenklatura and there has never been a realistic prospect of disarming people to absolute zero.
    And even if you could disarm the civilians down to zero, Dorner proved the threat can come from the rogue person. From the inside guy. The ex-cop. The Obama admirer. This frootloop is now after them. Well I’ll be darned. And what now? Because once a state loses legitimacy and trust, then guess what, even the right wing conservative guys, some of them at least, begin rooting for a person like Dorner, in spite of themselves, even if they shouldn’t.
    If you have legitimacy the entire country can be armed to the teeth and there won’t be the slightest bit of instability. If it has no legitimacy, then God help it even if the populace has nothing but machetes. Hence the single the greatest thing to fear is corruption and lies.”

  18. If you don’t like “captcha”,you can avoid it by not commenting.
    I am not crazy about it myself,but I accept it because I accept and appreciate Kate’s judgement.
    Furthermore,and I say this with my tinfoil firmly in place,the ‘captcha’ sends back comments that contain spelling mistakes. This is a good thing for us all.

  19. Wallyj — Do we really want people to not comment simply because they are annoyed by the captcha? What if they had something interesting to say? I also have difficulty with captcha. This version is exceptionally difficult to decipher. I have seen other versions that are not so problematical.

    I don’t like captcha either. I use the most secure web site in Canada, RBC online trading. No captcha there!! What gives??

  21. Plainzdrifter, even when I can see the letters and numbers clearly, I still get “back”, so most of the time I automatically do the preview thing and even then it sometimes takes a couple of tries. Weird.

On the plus side – and this from the POV of someone with administrative privileges here – the use of Captcha has greatly reduced the possibility of legitimate comments getting ‘disappeared’ altogether, for the following reason: under the old system there would be a billion spam comments – sometimes several trillion, or even a quadrillion — on a spam list that included legitimate comments that had been sent to the filter, so in order to release a comment, one of us (Kate, lance, Robert, myself, etc) had to a) sort through them at length looking for legitimate comments in all that mess, and then b) open up the thread to check the comments under that post to make sure that the comment (which in many cases was already been re-configured/rewritten so that it wasn’t apparent at first glance that it was the same comment as the one caught in the spam filter) hadn’t been re-sent and successfully published; to release it from the spam filter in such cases would be to double-post a comment, which could potentially make the commenter look….stubborn or repetitious.
    Under the new system all actual spam comments are punted off the field of play from the get-go, while any legitimate comments that get caught in the filter are plainly visible on the regular comments page among the published comments but with a different symbol beside them, which makes it easy to release them because you can check adjacent comments to see if the same comment has gone through, without having to open up the actual thread to check for double-posts.
    Believe me, the amount of time it takes to retype the captcha pales in comparison to the amount of time we used to have to spend slogging through the spam comments looking for legitimate comments, which was the blogging equivalent of tearing rags. And for commenters, the bottom line is that the likelihood of a legitimate comment being inadvertently deleted due to the lack of free time to scan through acres of spam is now approaching zero. This is a good thing.
    Btw, for what it’s worth, I find SDA’s version of captcha super easy to decipher; on some other sites it’s like a Rorschach test where there’s only one correct answer.

  23. I’m totally with you, EBD. I’ve never had any trouble deciphering the letters and numbers — and my eyesight’s not getting any better! I touch type, which makes the Captcha’s a piece of cake!
