Sun News Network has made what it calls a “do or die” application to the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) to be put on basic cable, just like its main competitors.
“We are asking for the same type of licence that CTV and CBC had for 13 and 21 years respectively for their news channels,” said Kory Teneycke, vice-president of Sun News.

Well, so long as they continue to “promote the multicultural … nature of Canadian society” & their “steadfast commitment to fostering the special place of Canada’s aboriginal peoples” etc.
I agree with the Sun whole heartedly in this. There has to be inherent political partisan bias in the CRTC treating a Canadian news outlet with more contempt than foreign disinfo channels. The Bias is open and contemptuous and we all should get behind the Sun in this and go after CRTC bias if they are denied broadcast equity with their direct competition.
No matter where you stand on the political spectrum you must see that allowing political tribalism to infect a federal media regulatory commission and use this power to effectively stifle/repress the voices of diverse political opinion is dangerous to our democracy. If you believe in free markets and level playing fields, you must see that the CRTC offering official nepotism to the Sun’s competitors and openly interfering with equitable commercial competition in the media business is a dangerous trend which must be corrected.
I will be putting this application support drive on my mailing list and I hope other more savvy netizens will do more to get support up for the Sun application.

I’ve long believed in reading/listening/watching to a variety of political opinions. Up until Sun News came onto the TV, this simply wasn’t the case. One can pretend that there’s a diversity of opinions on the other Canadian networks but there simply is not.
It would be a very positive step for Canada if Sun News were granted a channel on the basic cable lineup throughout our country.

It’s time that the entire cable licence/bundle concept was demolished, and the providers forced to go a la carte.
Rather than add Sun to the basic cable package, eliminate the packages entirely, and open up real competition. That includes any tax-funded subsidies to any channel.
I am conflicted here. I don’t approve of these regulations at all and it seems ironic Sun would be using CRTC fiat to get into people’s homes. OTOH, fair regulation is better than unfair.
I recently had my cable provider ring me up to switch over from analog to digital, as analog was being phased out in my area.
I told them I wanted Sun News Network and FNN or no deal.
The helpful gal tossed it in to the cable package for $0.95 for the year.

Petition done. It is the additional viewpoint that is so valuable about SUN’s oftentimes contrarian standpoint. Their less politically compliant and near activism is valuable when compared to the uniform social justice filtered reporting from the twins of sameness, CBC and CTV.
In a game of guessing, what might your readers think was the reason for the nationwide blackout of SUN News Channel last night between 6 and 7pm Pacific Time?
Bizarrely, the Sun channel was replaced by CTV Toronto which was showing the new Kevin Bacon TV show. Calls to the atlantic office of our west coast cableco revealed a nationwide problem. They offered no answers on the phone.

The only thing I’d sign is a petition calling for the CRTC to be abolished. It’s just a corporatist cabal of bell and rogers execs.

One of Quebecor Media’s biggest shareholders (that isn’t a Peladeau) is the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, the provincial government wealth fund misbegotten by Jacques Parizeau. Among the Caisse’s responsibilities is the investment of contributions to the Quebec Pension Plan and the pension plan enjoyed by Quebec government employees.
The pockets of Quebec City’s army of professional separatists are nicely lined by the tithes cable companies must pay to Quebecor to be able to carry TVA, an option the CRTC insists Canadians from sea to sea must be allowed to enjoy, even if they haven’t a word of French.
I think we can agree that the loyalty to the Crown of those given the privilege of broadcasting on Canada’s airwaves should be beyond question. The thought of your cable bill funding the luxuries of a Muslim tyrant and enemy of the Queen should be little more of an outrage than that of its funding the comfortable retirement to Florida of unrepentant French traitors and felquistes. No, I don’t want to pay for the emir’s yacht. Do you want to pay for Jacques Parizeau’s limo?
Deal with the problem and only the problem. Get the Queen’s enemies off Canada’s airwaves. You can start by pulling the plug on the CBC and the Reseau des independantistes along with Al-Jazeera, and insisting that Quebecor buy back the Caisse’s shares or have Sun News’ license put in the shredder.
While they’re at it, they can tell Warren Kinsella he needn’t come back.
Frankly, I find the idea of a regulator mandating a private company to air a particular network to be repulsive.

Sun TV needs a different business model. I don’t have cable TV and actually have no TV reception whatever. I refuse to pay money for cable TV unless the option was Sun news only as a single channel that I’d get. (Will I guess I might as well ask for FNN at the same time).
Still waiting to hear back from Sun when I sent them an email a few weeks ago letting them know I was quite willing to pay for commercial free internet access to their material. Delivering personalized content over the internet is what’s going to kill the current cable TV model which forces everyone to be subjected to CBC; I consider even transientf exposure when channel surfing in a hotel room to be dangerous to ones health.
The CRTC is one of the statist organizations that needs to be eliminated. If Sun TV allows me to sign up for shows via the internet, I’ll happily do so. I see no reason to sign a petition which acknowledges the current statist control of TV.

I don’t receive any broadcast TV since last summer when CBC/APTN/RC shut down the analog signals feeding my antenna, and there’s no digital broadcast here. I don’t miss it one bit, in fact I’m glad it’s gone. No more damn marketing beamed into my livingroom. I looked at cable or satellite options but wasn’t interested in their ‘bundles’ giving dozens of channels of crap for one or two interesting ones like the history channel. While researching the options I discovered by some rather pointed questioning that I could get cable internet only. They don’t market this because it’s way cheaper than any of their cable channel ‘bundles’. With software like adblock I can filter out almost all the crap and pick and choose what I want to watch on my schedule. Simple, easy and cost effective, it’s the best news and entertainment option I’ve found yet.
Captcha crap. I’ve noticed that sometimes the Captcha thingie rejects the character string and clicking on ‘back’ gives the same erroneous string again. However if you click on ‘preview’ it gives a different string that works.
I just added my name to support their application. I was not impressed with Shaw Direct Satelitte when in order to receive SNN after the free trial period I was forced to get a more expensive package than the basic one we had. They refused to provide it as an add-on for an extra charge. I stated that the only channel of interest is SNN and did not want any package, since none of the the package was of interest. Again the answer was negative, that I could not just subscribe to SNN. We certainly need a level playing field.
If we lose the SUN , we are left a void where the only news is the left.
The darkness of CBC with thier leftist buddies as gatekeepers of what we can watch. Real News will be lost in the shadows of the socialist message.

Ontario grade 7 and 8 history books are chock-full of Native exploits and achievements. While I too don’t like the mandatory usage fee for cable tv the point is if the CBC (Liberal Party media wing) and CTV are going to get it then SUN TV should. CNN and Al jazeera should only be available on a pay as you watch basis just like FOX News.
With this in mind I joined the petition.
Al Jazeera is actually a superior news source that does actual newsgathering and investigating in the field, something which is becoming a rare commodity these days. Most of the news channels just provide useless talking heads bleating the talking points of the left or right.
What thy’re really demanding is that the cable companies, in effect, subsidize them because they’re not able to make their station fly otherwise.
As a conservative, I have contempt for a company that can’t make it on its own, then goes whining to a government body to strong-arm cable companies into carrying it.
I have even greater contempt, considering that the station claims to be a conservative enterprise. Whatever happened to the wisdom of the market and free enterprise? If they can’t make their business model successful they deserve to fail, just like any other business.
On a personal note, I am further disgusted by the outdated racism shown by such hosts as Michael Coren (against black people) and Ezra Levant (against Roma people). I am sick and tired of conservative values being tainted by the racism of horrible spokesmen such as these.
I’m ticked that Sun Tv stopped broadcasting over the air in Toronto. they used to have a signal on Channel 43, but they stopped for some reason. So my attitude toward them is the same as theirs is to me; f ’em.

A primer but change it up a bit so it’s not like the CRTC receiving a form letter: I am writing to support the application by Sun News for mandatory distribution on analog and digital basic service in Canada (Reference #2012-0687-1). As you know, Sun News is 100% Canadian and produces 96 hours a week of Canadian content but is less available than a number of American and foreign all-news channels. That’s not right. In fact, some cable and satellite companies don’t even offer Sun News at all!
I believe in fair play , time to give fresh commentary to everyone.

I Agree That Sun News should be treated the same as the other Networks and be giving the same type of licence to reach all of Canada.Why do I watch Sun News? Because they are not like CBC who has their own agenda and they don’t speak for all Canadians,like the 2010 March For Life in Ottawa,not a word was said about the March on CBC TV.This is hypercritical of a Network who receives money from taxes and are not balance in their news reporting.With CTV they give some coverage more then I can say for CBC. With the Sun News, the Pro Life March in Ottawa 2012 was giving excellent reporting.so I am all in favor of extending their broadcasting,to all viewers across Canada.

Getting SO fed up with the sound cutting out with the SUNNEWS that happens ONLY when EZRA or Coren’s shows are on – why? Been that way since late last week.
Checked with the SUNNEWS – not originating from them obviously.
Left it on the SUNNEWS all day today, to see if it cut out – nope, but as soon as EZRA came on at 5 pm it cut out endlessly! Same for when Coren’s show is on at 7pm, and that’s about all of TV editorial news a day I watch. SHAW [our provider] is not very helpful – they just told me “We don’t know why and oh it may get fixed in a couple of days or so” and we’ll give you a credit of a couple of bucks! Grrrr, keep you chump change SHAW and just stop jerking us around!
Is anyone else getting this problem, we are in ONT and SHAW is our PROVIDER via satellite. This does NOT happen on any other CDN news channels when we tested them out over the weekend and yesterday. Now wondering if they are doing this so that they can claim higher numbers of views from SUN viewers testing the sound issue, as support for the leftists news channels over the SUNNEWS or am I being too suspicious?
