Your Moral And Intellectual Superiors

The devil made them do it.

Magnotta was elected Newsmaker of the Year even though he didn’t receive a single vote from a newsroom in Quebec, where much of the story was anchored.
Quebec had several big news stories in 2012, including the months-long student protests, the explosive Charbonneau Commission looking into corruption, and the shooting only metres away from Pauline Marois on the night she returned the Parti Quebecois to power.
“As news goes there were certainly far more significant issues that touched our nation,” Doyle MacKinnon, the Lethbridge Herald’s managing editor, said in explaining why he chose Magnotta.
MacKinnon said it’s a sad commentary that men such as Magnotta and former colonel Russell Williams become household names while many Canadians don’t know who the recently canonized Kateri Tekakwitha is.
“But the fact is,” he said, “the truly reviled invariably make bigger news than the moderately revered.”

“Invariably”. As though the “news” just flies out their asses on its own.

  1. The article infuriates me on so many levels. I gathered from reading it that journalists see their role as pandering to the lowest, most prurient, most shocking…as long as it garners readership, it’s all good. I guess I’ve known this for a long time but now, they seem to be turning their basest instincts into a virtue.
Like the new look, but I have always sucked at those confusing “Captcha” things.

  2. These journalistic frauds and half-wit imbeciles are not, nor ever have been, anyone’s “Moral and Intellectual Superiors”. So why do you play along with this false narrative? Can you not see how you give credence to the very same thing you’re mocking? Words and ideas and how they are presented do matter. The Americans over indulged in this tactic and lost big. Beware! We need less “smirky-smirk” and “irony” and more “tell it like it is”.
With that in mind. Let Me Fix That Headline” with this: “Journalistic Idiots Prove Themselves Again” That may not be the greatest but I’m sure you can do better.

  3. I thought this was a real slight to Jun Lin. He made it coast-to-coast. As for this wonderfully creative, masterfully headlining, free spirit (Luka – probably a Liberal; if it weren’t for some laws, he could be a candidate for leadership), this is the sort of perverse figure the MSM loves to glorify. It’s funny how most of the Canadian citizenry would probably prefer this Magnotta character (even souring the famous wine-maker’s name) ahead of PM Stephen Harper in a popularity contest. Shameful, reprehensible, detestable…These are words that are inadequate. Newsmaker of the Year? Again I’m at a loss for words. Indeed, our civilization is decaying, but it’s this encouragement to decay that really bothers me.

  4. many Canadians don’t know who the recently canonized Kateri Tekakwitha is
Without the media, I never would have heard of her. Fortunately, I caught the news the day she was canonized.
OTOH, I couldn’t miss the coverage of Magnotta and Russell as the media was on those stories like white on rice. They couldn’t get enough of these two and no detail was too minor for them to cover in excruciating detail. The MSM would probably respond with a “we’re just giving Canadians what they want” but I’ll guarantee their switchboards weren’t inundated with calls of “more, gimme more”.
In the same vein, no one called up begging for more stories on the damn monkey and its crazy owner but barely a day has gone by in the last two weeks without hearing about that non-story.
If the ink-stained wretches aren’t stupid, lazy and base, they certainly think their audience is.

  5. So Magnotta is “elected” newsmaker of the year. What are they going to do? Have a gala event hosted by Peter Mansbridge and hand out the award?
Then they wonder why these narcissists do what they do.

  6. First off, I think everyone needs to think about what the news media does and where it’s loyalty lies. You may believe in that old self-promotional myth that the news media sells you the news and has a ‘duty to inform’. Baloney.
The media does not sell you the news, they sell your attention to their advertisers.
Without ad revenue all the newspapers, broadcast radio and TV stations would go bankrupt. Subscription cable news shows sell ad time to make ends meet. Even this website generates revenue based on the number of unique visitors who come to the page daily and see the ads on the left and purchase the wares displayed there.
So when the mainstream media splashes lurid details about grotesque crime they are only feeding the public what they know they will pay attention to. Why does the public want reports of dismemberment and other heinous acts? One theory is that part of everyones survival mechanism is to be constantly alert for threats. Let’s imagine we’re watching a hockey game and the news preview comes on and the anchor says ‘The weather is calm, all is well, no rockets were fired at Israel, more at 11’ are you more or less likely to stay up and watch if he says ‘Major storm on the way, a serial killer is loose, nuclear war in the Middle east, more at 11’?
Is it any wonder that those who choose what is newsworthy, chose someone who grabbed the average reader or viewers attention through a diabolical murder rather than someone who did something positive?

  7. Even Jian Ghomeshi of the CBC reflected on the foolishness of the choice & that it helped provide the murderer with what he wished. Ghomeshi’s a lefty, but it seems that’s mostly out of naivety, at least he can normally conduct an interview with someone he disagrees with in a professional manner; I’d be willing to bet he’ll be one of those on the left who undergo a conversion at some point in life. He’s worth more than a hundred idiots like Kady or Anna Maria Tremonti.

  8. Most people I know would call me a news junkie. Funnily enough, I didn’t remember who Magnotta was until I read the Maclean’s article. More importantly, however, he holds the title through fraudulent means — 78% voted against him!
I’m most interested in the fact that PMSH got no votes. That must be driving the scandal mongers on the big newspaper comment sections and , of course, M. Mulcair, stark raving mad.

  9. I wouldn’t be too quick to assume the media chose Magnotta as Newsmaker of the Year because ““It had sx, it had murder, it had an ostensibly good-looking (alleged) villain, it had intrigue, it had social media, it had international elements”. Maybe the media’s fascination is something much darker and depraved – their professions own sick predisposition to criminal behavior.
Iowahawk has been the lone voice documenting the evil coverup – “At the Media Violence Project, our charter is to protect public safety by researching, documenting and raising awareness about the ever-increasing wave of violent, disgusting crimes perpetrated by members of the American news media. It is a largely thankless task — often requiring a cast iron stomach — but if our work has prevented one more American child from falling victim to a criminally insane anchorman or newspaper reporter, it will all have been worth it.”

Who is watching the Canadian MSM? Politicians should really do something to prevent an American-style media crime wave.
    Merry Christmas.

  10. “Stephen Harper did not get any votes in what is believed to be the first time in the last two decades a sitting prime minister has been shut out in the survey.”
THIS is the important item in the article! That fascist Harper and his government are SOOOOOO toast when our guy,Saint Justin-the -cute wins the next election and brings liberalism back into fashion! Yes,we’re anti-Harper,24/7/365 and 366 in leap years.
    Give me strength Lord.

  11. The MainStream Media know that the next psychopath is inspired by, feeds on, the publicity given to the murders committed by the last one.
They reap what they have sown.

  12. Larry – some of them are probably salivating at the thought of the next copy-cat killing so they can leap into their over-the-top action. Atrocity junkies, too many of them.

  13. The news media sell an entertainment product to a readership of moral degenerates who worship money, violence, sex and material success at any cost.

  14. When I hear the name Magnotta, I immediately think of the winery and retail stores in Ontario.
The MSM is catering to these people by keeping their names in front of the public. That is exactly what they crave. Same thing with that dipshit in Conneticut. I’ll bet that Luka Magnotta is feeling very important tonight.

  15. Of course, it is Prime Minister Harper’s goal *not* to make news, as he can be certain that any “news” he makes will be media-massaged and used against him. His goal is not to feed the beast.
I only hope he has the strength to resist the blackmail attempt by Chief Theresa Spence and the members of “More Idle than Ever” to force him to meet with the slimming Chief Spence (who doesn’t appear to be interested in meeting with anybody else in Mr Harper’s government).

  16. The last time I had a conversation with a journalist, she asserted that a)the Arctic had almost totally melted and b)the Constitution was stupid and it was a shame that there was such a thing as Separation of Powers, because that was what was allowing Congress to stop President Obama from doing all the wonderful things he wanted to do.
Someone had to expain to her gently that Separation of Powers didn’t mean quite what she seemed to think it did. And when I laughed aloud (it was involuntary) at the thing about the Arctic, she said, and I quote: “Well I won’t discuss things with people who just won’t admit basic facts.”
I am not exaggerating. This is a woman has published books on serious subjects and is quite well known locally. She’s actually quite intelligent.

  17. They are so used to the “if it bleeds, it leads” mentality, they are blind to the way sensationalizing scum like Magnotta has people fleeing the broadsheets in droves. Good catch Kate. Sez it all.

  18. My best friends Wife used to be the editor for a central Alberta newspaper. Not a hill I was prepared to die on, but we didn’t exactly agree on the idea that bias was passed down to the readers via reporters. I hadn’t the energy to bring up the editors in the conversation.
Glad she is now a branch manager for a bank. She is much more responsible fiscally.

  19. Ironic they named a useless psycho NMOTY a week after a useless psycho goes on a rampage.
Psychos from a certain Arabic religion hold freedom to ransom. Narcisstic psycHoe entertainers debase culture. A self absorbed (possibly) psycho runs America. Psychos are glorified by Hollywood.
The media reflects the face of civillisation back to the world. The
    media feeds off psychopaths.
This is the endgame of civilisation.

  20. Yeah, smirky smirk, irony and cleverness is entertaining, but doesn’t do much.
Like cutting of the tail of a snake to kill it…there is only one thing that has changed the world for the better in a big way, but it seems a lot of people try to deny that reality.
The Christian countries weren’t built on entertainment and cleverness transmitted via electrons. That was a real blow to the head of the figurative snake.
    Merry Christmas 🙂

  21. Boycotting the media really works. When I read the line “Magnotta was elected Newsmaker of the Year…” my first thought was “wine is newsmaker of the year?”
I’d completely forgotten about the psycho slasher dude. Which is AWESOME! An entire psycho slasher media frenzy, successfully ignored.
Behold, this is how we kill the media. Not with a bang, but a “…zzzz… wha’? Did you say something?”
Also, awesome news that NewsWeak is going bust. One by one, they will fall.

  22. You may be right, generation twitster. This may indeed be the endgame of civilisation. Whether with an “s” or a “z”. Or it may not. It appears that Our Betters here South of the Border are going to try for gun confiscation. That may be an overreach they – and their “Law Enforcement” enablers – will truly regret. Of course, gun owners in the US may just meekly roll over, a la
“Weepy”, surrender our guns, and beg for our Blue Wall to scratch our bellies. Or not. And if and when the festivities start, MANY other wrongs may be dealt with appropriately as well.

  23. Interesting that this story gives HUGE credibility to the accusations of the NRA that the media in the US are complicit in the Newtown school murder.
