Unless Mark Carney can swiftly and convincingly demonstrate that he responded to those Liberals’ overtures with a quick and unequivocal refusal, we shouldn’t be surprised if non-Liberals start looking through his recent speeches through the corrosive, distorted lens of partisan politics. Was his speech to the Canadian Auto Workers simply a play for union support? Was his dismantlement of the Dutch Disease talking point simply a tactic to put the NDP off-balance? For me, these are rhetorical questions written with a sense of sickening dread; others will doubtlessly repeat them in earnest and with angry, partisan vigour.

Are they trying to smear Carney because he’s left Canada for the UK? What’s the point of this idle chatter?
The writer said “…not-insignificant elements in the Liberal Party of Canada were willing to risk one of the most crucial elements of our governance for partisan gain.”
Not one of the most crucial elements. There are not-insignificant elements willing to risk Any and All elements of our governance for partisan gain. Out of habit and out of their current desperate straits the Liberals are the worst but there are people like that throughout the spectrum of political parties because that’s what people like that would do with their lives, and because there are so many voters who will let them.
Interesting point, why? One thing it does point out is that bureaucrats should not vacation with pals who are MP’s. Another is that it also shows that Carney is as smart as thought to politely distance himself from the libs and their rodeo.
” we shouldn’t be surprised if non-Liberals ”
I would be surprised if Conservative supporters tried to inflate this lead balloon.
OTOH,the NDP/Green people are prone to believing and fabricating conspiracy theories, and the Libs would do almost anything to tar our PM.
Who knows,’unnamed highly placed sources’ may say that the Conservatives conspired with the Bank of Canada to create a stronger economy, thereby weakening Liberal support across the country. I could see the cbc running with that.
Liberals are corrupt and are absolutley willing to do anything for partisan gain .
I appreciate every day Canada is not governed by the Liberal mob
LIBRANOs are a cancer….always present ready to mastasticize (ready to take over and kill the healthy part)….the infection runs deep….especially in the snivell service…
Corrupt Liberals are drooling at the possibility of emulating their lord and saviour Barack Obama. They see Him print billions of dollars to buy votes and there are no negative political consequences, the destruction of the US economy is simply the price that must be paid to buy that self-righteous liberal feeling.
“Close” counts only in horseshoes and hand-grenades. So what if the Liebrals tried to get Carney or even if he took a lingering glance at an opportunity? Maybe the drinks were flowing, and there were even more “opportunities” we wouldn’t care to hear about at Scott Brison & Spouse’s social… As for the new-to-be-Head of the Bank of England, he’s under the big microscope over there too, as they even check into what makes his spouse (ie. wife), the new Lady Di tick… She’s a Lib too, self-accomplished and all. Forgive the link from The Red Star, but it did catch my eye…>>

The same crew that tried to build an infrastructure and then slot in the figurehead of Michael ignatieff tried to repeat the scenario.
Carney may be guilty of participating in this or more likely just never said no. Either way troubling on a number er of fronts. Liberals can’t help themselves. The politicos just looking for an electable puppet so the Cindy fur keeps rolling out
Carney must go! Liberal Carney Must Resign Now!.
Here is how MSM treats the Joker & His Jokette: “Mr. Brison and his spouse”. Shades of Joe Clark.

ET (10:50), I think Stephen Gordon’s concerns – that Mark Carney, while the Governor or the bank of Canada, was apparently “responsive to the efforts” of a “tight network of Liberals” who last summer tried to get him to join the Liberal leadership race, and that this might have been jeopardizing the non-partisan nature of his post, and that his subsequent speeches and statements on a variety of issues may have been, or could be seen as, political maneuverings undertaken with an eye towards his future politician (partisan) role, rather than as an almost entirely non-partisan arbiter of monetary policy — are quite valid.

“Mr. Carney responded to inquiries by seeking clarification about the job, but also about what it would take to beat Mr. Trudeau at the convention next April. “He asked questions,” said a well-known party organizer who was tasked by Liberals with finding answers for Mr. Carney.”
This is something of a bombshell, even if it’s not a complete surprise: Mark Carney, the non-partisan head of the Bank of Canada, seriously considered running running for Prime Minister as a Liberal, even as he worked for the Conservative government.”

Maybe Scotty was only trying to get inside information from Carney.
A few years back Brison was interviewed by the RCMP about the income trust leak. His explanation was rather dubious to say the least, but he was not charged with anything.

If one of our most crucial government structures can be ruined by an offer by a political party, then the problem runs pretty deep. Central banking IS the problem. And all central bankers are politicians, ‘independence’ fluff notwithstanding.
Tempest in an etc. I see no reason why a person can’t be approached by a political Party to consider running as a candidate for that Party.
Just because he works in a non-partisan role doesn’t mean a Party can’t talk to him. The problem would be if he accepted their overtures and kept his n-p job,but if he resigned immediately,I see no controversy.Carney apparently considered the offer, and rejected it.
Carney is allegedly a competent and experienced person with a good CV,so why wouldn’t a political Party approach him,the Conservatives should have as well if he’s that good.
It does show that at least all the LPC executives aren’t completely besotted with Baby Pierre, and were looking for a real candidate.
Carney may very well have a real chance at leading the LPC in 2018,if Trudeau hasn’t completely sunk that ship with his bi-polar rants and raves by then.
LAS is entirely right.
There’s no such thing as an “independent” Central Banker. The only difference among central bankers is their level of acting ability.
Carney was a pretty good actor. I mean, you had to laugh, eh, at his stern lectures about Canadian private indebtedness while he pushed artificially cheap credit upon them in the form of irrestibly low interest rates.
And didn’t I read somewhere that the Central Bank of Canada secretly bailed out the banking industry to the tune of … ?$140B?.
Here’s something we conservatives should acknowledge: the Chretien/Martin kibosh on bank mergers is a major factor in our “relative” success. As a con/libertarian I was very angry at the time but that was before I fully understood that banking is not private enterprise.
Which is not at all to suggest that this was anything but an unintended consequence. An occasional good outcome following a government intervention is usually a happy accident.
Me No Dhimmi “And didn’t I read somewhere that the Central Bank of Canada secretly bailed out the banking industry to the tune of … ?$140B?.”
I’ve seen a lot higher number but it was the total of a series of loans and repayments. In the normal course of business, the Bank of Canada covers any shortfalls on a daily basis. These loans are routine and normally quite temporary.
the Chretien/Martin kibosh on bank mergers is a major factor in our “relative” success
I don’t buy that. I think it was our having fewer less crazy regulations and more sensible-albeit still too loose-monetary policy. Since the crash, Carney has Greenspanned our monetary policy good riddance.
EBD, 12:33p.m. —
I’m more with ET, 10:50a.m. and wallyj, 11:30a.m.
I recall the Chretien Liberals making an issue (again through the G&M back in the day) of John Crow (too tight — both on monetary policy and on perceived association with the Conservatives) and replacing him, at the end of his first term, with Gordon Thiessen, who accommodated a looser inflation target and who had a lower profile. All of which had little or no impact on the broad trajectory of economic policy, IMO (I’d be prepared for correction, if I’m wrong).
I do feel that the co-incidence/co-ordination of policy between the Carney Bank and the Flaherty DOF on the need to cool the Canadian housing market before things got right out of hand has had a salutary impact on the economy, which I think will pay us all substantial dividends down the road, for a number of reasons (not least of which is the market value property assessment system in Ontario, which in a perpetually rising market encourages municipal over-expenditure, all day, every day — and there’s no San Andreas fault between Ontario and Western Canada, fortunately). If Carney did indeed have any tangential dance with the Liberals (of which I’m skeptical), no harm, no foul.
What I find interesting, however, is that somebody in the Liberal pantheon of “significant unnamed players”, or whatever the G&M is calling it these days (maybe a Crosbie-like description of the “dance of the seven veils” is more like it), all of this information — the essence of which has been rumoured for months — gets reported a week after Carney’s appointment as GBOE, KCMG(?).
As an obverse to ET, what if it’s not designed to “smear Carney”, as ET suggests, but rather to embellish the Liberals — “well, he always was a Liberal, you know” — to try to build the gravitas of the other candidates into something more than they are (kind of like the movie, “The Man Who Never Was”)?
Shortly after the announcement of Carney taking up the BoE gig, I overheard a BoC bureaucrat speak admiringly of him, how his departure was a loss, and speculate hopefully on the possibility that he might eventually “come back [as LPC leader] to save Canada”.
Carney can car less what a flaccid rag like Mcleans says about him, he’s off to suck caviar with the Euro banking class now his job of assessing Canada’s reserve assets is over.(our housing bubble hasn’t popped yet folks, but like the rest of the globe’s bankrupted banking systems, we are highly debt leveraged and a fractional rise in interest rates will creat economic disaster).
After seeing how weak our reserves are and warning Canadians that they are as vulnerable as the US where private debt is concerned (CDIC hasn’t enough in reserve for a US-style bank melt down), he probably got nervous sitting on such an egg shell thin economy and pulled a Greenspan and jumped ship – for the green grass of the daddy of all central banking cartels in the UK.
He’ll have a nice mansion provided on sunny shores and be insulated financially when the big melt down hits while we’re all still squabbling over pointless partisan distractions. But fear not, we’ll see him again from time to time all tanned and chipper in his Savile row suits at Bilderberg meetings.
He could care less about the petty diversionist squabbling that goes on in our demented media.
yawnnnnnnn
David Southam – hmm, interesting analysis.
Are the Liberals that desperate for a respectable image that they’ll lift one off whoever seems to have a free image to snatch?
Answer. Probably yes.
didn’t Carney publicly say he didn’t want to be their “Circus Clown?”
Sounds like the bridge has been burned. He’s worked with Harper and co. face to face. Who would want to go up against that enormous machine? The Tories have tens of millions of dollars piling up every year to spend exclusively on utterly ruining and destroying their opponents.
JT, will win, but the Liberals are right to worry. He’s a lightweight and under crazy pressure he could crack and all it would take is a few missteps and the people who bother to vote will say, “Ummm, no thanks.”
Remember how ridiculous he was when he grew Guy Fawkes facial hair in solidarity with the Occupy retards? Remember when he was speaking about himself in the third person and calling Peter Kent a piece of shit?
The guy could spectacularly flame out. Just wait.
I think carney looks like iggy and that scares me!!!
Justin is simply his mother’s son. Odd how Ms. Margaret Sinclair Trudeau Kennedy Jagger Wood Kemper’s contribution to Shiny Pony’s, er, pedigree is overlooked by the LPC brain trust.
ET, 6:42p.m.–
That is the best self-answering, as opposed to rhetorical (which has a slightly different definition, as you well know) question I have ever seen.
No disrespect intended, but what’s the “probably” part about, exactly, in your answer?
We had a guy who portrayed himself as chapter and verse to the business and political commentariat, and then he, er, “lift[ed] one off whoever seems to have a free image to snatch”: “I wish we had known more.”
Apparently, the authority figure, lifting the free image of the victim, has only one defence: “Soldiers. With guns. On our streets. In Canada.”
I agree with mr Southam. This looks very much like an attempt to re establish the LPC as a very important Party by riding Carnys coatails, yet somehow failing to realize that in doing so would taint both the LPC and Carny rather badly.
I would hazard a guess that Kathy shaidles list on the epic failures of a certain self described Liberal operative just got a little longer.
But the two years he spent as ADM to Flaherty haven’t tainted him? You people are idiots.
Apparently Iberia doesn’t understand timelines. The issue is that Carney was approached and carried on conversations over an extended period of time while he was BofC Gov. It’s obviously not necessary to be a virgin before you get the job or there would be noone qualified.
What this looks like is revenge by blu libs over a rejection of leadership machinations.
Carney said no thanks and even refused to offer any credence to those offering.
Then when he took the job as head of the BoE, the blu libs decided to nudge their friends at the globe.
This story demonstrates how bad it is for the blu libs that they can’t find someone other than Garneau to go up against the paper doll.
