Canada has officially withdrawn from the Kyoto climate agreement.
The death notice comes years after the Stephen Harper government made clear it rejected the terms that were negotiated by the Jean Chretien government in 1997.
According to the agreement, Canada would reduce its greenhouse gases 6% below 1990 levels by 2012.
Environment Minister Peter Kent pointed to the fact the United States and China – the two largest carbon emitters – never signed on as reason to abandon the agreement. And one year ago Canada officially announced its repudiation of it, becoming the first country in the world to do so.

Woo-hoo!
The greenturds will be totally apoplectic!
We’re in for some entertainment now, shurnuff!
Carbon trading = Tulip mania!
Well done Stephen Harper, Canada’s political Chess Master!
China did sign and ratify the Kyoto agreement, just not Annex I. This means China thinks the whole thing is a great idea, but without any commitment to reductions. What a great way of being ‘green’ without actually doing anything. Lots of that going on.
Green Party Leader Elizabeth May – an environmentalist and fiscal conservative – called it a “day of shame”.
Fiscal conservative?
Trying to bend my mind around that one.
People that matter out here on the Left Coast, are still professed believers. Carbon taxes, repudiation of pipelines. Dumb-ass hippies. We get all the”don’t want jobs” clowns gravitate to our side of the country. Led of course by the biggest welfare scammer’s in the country the “first” nations.
If we didn’t pull out of Kyoto, we might be accused of necrophilia.
Don’t know anymore which side of Peter Kent’s mouth the noise is coming from these days.
bverwey
Another deal well done (stick a fork in it). Good on everyone who spoke up and said nay to this nonsense. There just may be a teeny, weeny little bit of hope for the future yet.
We need to declare a national holiday over this, my suggestion is in the new year, then we can have a Christmas Tree bonfire as a celebration..
Peter Kent takes his marching orders from Harper. Way to go Harper. Every once in a while I’m proud of this Country. This is one of those times. Now, if we could only give the middle finger to the UN …..
Yes, being realistic and using a bit of common sense is good news. Now will Minister Kent purge his ministry of the moonbat warmists and replace them with individuals qualified in real science? If not, what we rejected on the international level will continue to be implemented here at home.
Well if the harper govornemnt keeps this up they will once again recieve my vote …..wait….nahhhh who am i kidding they would recieve my vote anyway …look at the alternatives !!
Way to go PMSH!!! and company keep on keepin on boy’s !!
The U.S. produces ~20% of the world’s GHG emissions, and 27% of that comes from toxic polluting coal-fired electricity. China produces ~24% of the world’s GHG emissions, and about 40% of that comes from toxic polluting coal-fired electricity. Only half of China’s coal burning is for electricity, and toxic pollution controls in China are practically non-existent.
Canada only produces 2% of the world’s man-made GHGs and the oilsands only produce 5% of Canada’s total emissions.
The Oilsands produces one tenth of one percent [0.1%] of the world’s GHG emissions.
bverwey, I have the same feeling.
What peterj said. This is a good day for Canada. Thank you PM Harper and Minister Kent.
will DeYawn now have to rename his dog????
How in hell can anyone call Crazy Lizzie May a fiscal conservative, she is as nutty as a fruitcake and crazy as a sh!t house rat.She would put the country into bankruptcy in order to save the endangered one winged sea gull,as long as that one wing was on the left hand side and it supported Justin Time AKA You Know Who.
Well done, PM Harper and Environment minister Peter Kent. The Kyoto Accord REWARDS countries that are big polluters, such as China, by shifting money from the developed nations to so-called third world nations. The whole concept smacks of corruption and it encourages irresponsibility. The carbon credit trade was just another way for shysters to make money off fabricated climate paranoia. Al Gore has made millions off this fraud.
And this is why Tories were given a majority, clear headed thinking in a world run by fools of all sorts.
The US and China are just a convenient excuse.
The fact is that they didn’t want to go back to 1990 levels of GDP.
At least our American government voted the thing down — 0 to 95. Kinda been the habit of the American government — give lip service (and $147 billion or so) to the cause, but thump it soundly when it comes to passing laws.
It was window dressing on a global scale. If no one was ever willing to go after China, Russia and India for their pollution problems but freely declare that Canada was next to Hitler for even having oil sands, how could that charade be allowed to continue?
Kyoto, by the way, is a lovely city.
Lunatic ravings like Frankemm at December 14, 2012 9:36 PM add nothing useful to the discussion. I don’t agree with the Green party, however my personal opinion of their leader, or any other MP is irrelevant.
The Green party is a gift to the Conservative party. Anything that further fractures the left and prevents them from uniting is to Canada’s benefit.
Now, if only this government could get the Agenda 21 world government tentacles out of our system.
Hey North of 60 have you ever listened to this leader of the Green Party espouse her drivel,or did you happen to see the debate a few years ago where she made a fool of herself by interupying other candidates and constantly insisted on speaking out of turn. You are entitled to your opinion and I am entitled to mine, so stick to your elitism if you wish, she is still an embarassment to any party that she leads.
@ Ken (Kulak) at December 14, 2012 11:35 PM
Sun news was talking to Glen Beck about Agenda 21 today and it’s as if it was the first time Sun heard about it. We’ve been talking about it here on SDA for several years now. Anyway , Sun says they will keep it in their sights from here on in, which is good news. Greece may be a basket case but Agenda 21 certainly helped to put them there.

So what? Every vote she attracts to her insignificant party is a more disorganized left.
Try to see the bigger picture beyond your hatred for people you don’t agree with.

I can now resume contributing to the CPC.
Nice to be Canadian these days. The first to wake up from this Global warming scam that a corrupt UN has foisted on the World. For control. Other Governments still covet the taxes that they imagine are already in thier bank accounts.
and the UN is next!! hurrah!!!
Doesn’t anybody care how Dion’s dog “Kyoto” feels?
“…Tory MP Rob Anders called Kyoto a “tremendous waste of resources. The fact we were the first country to pull out gives us credibility; we were the first to say, ‘the emperor wears no clothes,'”
Bravo! Now, apply this same clear, common-sense logic to our participation in the UN.
His email is minister@ec.gc.ca
I’ve sent him a little positive reinforcement.
The whole global warming scam is the biggest wealth redistribution scheme in history. Good riddance.
Not a day when I feel much like celebrating, but this is very good news.
Yes, it was a good idea to scrap Kyoto. But scrapping it because China and other countries are not on board with mitigating AGW implies that the Conservatives are on board the AGW bus. So what hope is there of stopping this bus when all Federal parties are committed to AGW? The Conservative aren’t going to be in power forever and they were the only real hope of stopping the bus from going over the AGW cliff. Sure, I’ll give Kent a pat on the back, but at the same time I’ll give him a swift kick in the ass.
I read the Accord many moons ago. All the ‘developed’ countries were productive and just happened to have democratic governments and all the ‘developing’ countries were either communist or banana republics. The crime of the decade was the production of CO2. The developed countries had to transfer money to the developing countries to pay for their crimes. The only science involved was political science. Duh.
Canada should have been able to claim credits for the staggering CO2 sinks found in our forests relative to our small manufacturing sector but we are a developed country so, and I’m paraphrasing here, ‘no carbon credits for you capitalist pig dogs’. Heads they win, tails we lose. Chretien thought that it was a good idea to sign on.
As an aside, If the UN (one dictator, one vote) gains control of the Internet I couldn’t have left this comment.
A great blow against green fascism. I bet all the little carbon nazies are in a frenzy denouncing the government’s common sense and swearing vengence.
Meanwhile in the real world it’s just another normal sunny day with folks exhailing CO2 and trees and plants enjoying the free food.
Oh, I forgot, only 6 days until the predicted end of the world, well, not much time for the fear mongers to cause a panic and profit from it. But. where there’s a will there’s a way. Better get at it boys.
Finally,a government who sees Kyoto for what it is, a scam!!! Thank you PM Harper and company!!! Well done!
Blair, the LULUCF argument was lost at COP many years ago. It was blocked primarily by the Europeans. If they gave credit to North America for reforestation, only Europe would have had to take any action under Kyoto, entirely contrary to the reason why Europe has been pushing this thing for 20 years.
A good first step, now for the royal commission of inquiry, how did our employees foist this green scam upon us?
The collapse of our social institutions, which exist to prevent us from mass public hysteria, must not go unexamined.
This whole deceit was funded, created and promoted using our tax dollars. Imposed on us by our regulating class.
Time we let them self regulate in the private sector.
