  1. Kinda interesting: Cafe Hayek’s Don Boudreaux recently purchased a 1956 Sears catalog on eBay, and set to comparing the numbers of hours the average worker, then and now, would have to work to purchase particular consumer items.
    For example,

“…the typical American worker in 1956 had to work a total of 219.95/1.89 hours to buy that 9.6 cubic-foot fridge – or a total of 116 hours (to buy a 9.6 cubic-foot fridge). Today, to buy a similar (actually, slightly larger) no-frost refrigerator-freezer, the typical American worker must work a total of 298/19.79 hours – or 15 hours. That is, to buy basic household refrigeration and freezing, today’s worker must spend only 13 percent of the time that his counterpart in 1956 had to spend.

  2. Be still my beating heart,CBC has a liveblog up covering the by-elections,
One little problem,us regular folk cannot join in,but we can watch the CBC people talk about it.
    Woo Hoo.
They are not happy. Bev Oda’s riding will likely remain Conservative,Calgary Centre is close ,but Crockatt is leading. Victoria ,nothing yet.
I expect the coverage to change to a repeat of the Rick Mercer show any minute.

  3. just bought some wrangler jeans at walmart for 13.89 . substantially lower in price then I paid 41 years ago(19.99) and substantially more material in them too. fully 10 inches, too bad it wasnt in the leg , which is the same

  4. Uh oh,Kady is not happy.
I don’t know too much about the ‘twitter thing’ but …
    kady o’malley ‏@kady
How do you know?? Tell us! @carter_AB: Dear people projecting turn out in #yyccentre – STOP. The biggest polls are still to come.
That sounds like someone ‘projected a Crockatt win.
CBC has a Candy Crowley look-alike that is saying that even a Liberal/Green loss is still an upset.
    Sure babe.

  5. It’s early, but Crockatt (Cons.) seems to be pulling ahead, gaining with each new updated count.
Live updated results of the Calgary by-election here.

  6. Wallj, look for the CBC tomorrow to focus on the differential between Crockett’s win (what I expect to be a win) compared to Lee Richards 54% in the 2011 election as an indication that PMSH’s appeal is waning. Don’t, however, look for the CBC to do the same with Trudeau by casting negatively on him for showing up in Durham and defending the Lib candidates use of vets as a fundraising drive for the LP and the disappointing third place finish for his candidate. And funny that Hanna Teebidoo has mentioned many times the “controversy” surrounding Crockett’s support for Wild Rose yet mentions nothing about the Lib candidate’s controversy in Durham — either tonight or in her by-election “goings-on” over the past couple of weeks.

  7. wallyjTV has now declared Conservative wins in Calgary Centre and Durham,a greendp win in Victoria, and a whole bunch of losers on CBC tomorrow telling the voters that these by-elections vote don’t really matter.
Justin will be heard revving up his engines in the background.

  8. That Victoria race is something. It should be an NDP shoe-in, but, seeing the Green so close, is really a repudiation of the current version of the Mulcair NDP. Nothing more.
That riding is next door, and is thoroughly a leftwing moonbat area. Retired and current civil servants, university students, alt-lifestyle types, and welfarians, as well as the champagne socialist crowd.

  9. CBC has now declared a Conservative win in Calgary Centre. Some are reluctant to accept this.
9:59 PM kady o’malley @kady Do we know whether the advance polls in #yyccentre have been counted?
Or,does anyone know a good judge?

  10. While the number of stupid people never ceases to amaze me, I am delighted at them splitting their vote.
Even more amusing to watch it happen in Victoria. Definitely what we need is another lefto-fascist party to split votes.

  11. In Calgary Centre,it’s all over but the crying.
Unfortunately,we will hear way too much of that.
The NDP party is closing in on a full one thousand votes in Calgary Centre, out of a possible 94,000.
Yeah Tommy, you have reached out and touched us,and we reacted.

  12. Langmann
If the Greenies indeed pull it out, we will have to listen to the shrieking of one Lizard May, for awhile.
And then we will start to hear the cries from the other lefty parties, Libs and Dips, to ‘unite the left’…again and again.
We will see how much of a power tripper Lizard is, and what price she will extract, for her own gains, if she sells out. For the meantime, its bread and circuses, watching the left argue with each other, as to which party is more pure of heart.

  13. This video came up on my YouTube feed today. It’s a discussion from 2006 between Adam Carolla and Gloria Allred. After listening to it I came to these conclusions:
    1. Allred is parasite whose actions hurt society.
    2. She has enormously profited from her actions.
    3. Things have only gotten worse in the 6 years.
    🙁 x 3

  14. Geography is tough!
We learn from our moral and intellectual superiors at the Hill Times that “Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski (Regina-Lumsden-Lake Centre, Alta.)” is from Alta.? Alberta? They inspire such confidence in those of us west of Lake of the Woods that should only be allowed to run for city office. “Fabricating a Hockey Stick from Hot Air
This blanket rejection of any possibility other than the hypothetical threat of AGW has led to some strange behaviour for people who modestly proclaim themselves to be the world’s top climate scientists. Not only have they ignored and dismissed the hundreds of studies indicating the global existence of a Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age, they have set out to fabricate an alternate reality in the form of a graph purporting to represent the global temperature for the past thousand years. It portrays a near straight line wiggling up and down only a fraction of a degree for centuries until it begins an exponential rise gradually starting at the beginning of the 20th century and then shooting steeply up in the latter part of that century. This hockey stick-shaped graph was then heavily promoted as the icon of AGW. It appeared on the cover of the third climate assessment report of the IPCC published in 2003 and was reproduced at various places in the report itself.
Among the emails between leading climate researchers released in the Climategate affair were a number which revealed a concerted effort to come up with some means to deny the existence of the MWP. The implement chosen to do this became known as the Hockey Stick Graph.
The methodology used to construct the graph involved the use of estimates of temperatures from a very small sample of tree growth rings from the Yamal Peninsula in far northern Siberia and ancient stunted pine trees from near the tree line in the High Sierras of California.”

“Gormless Grad Killed World’s Oldest Tree: Lewis Lapham”
“On Aug. 6, 1964, Donald Currey was at the timberline of Nevada’s Wheeler Peak looking for bristlecone pines, the oldest trees on earth.
(To listen to the podcast, click here.)
A graduate student, he was working on a climate timeline, and the trees held valuable data. Using a Swedish borer, Currey took samples from trunks without harming the pines.
His 114th specimen had a 252-inch circumference and was so tough it broke his regular borer and the backup. The Forest Service gave him permission to get out his chain saw and cut the tree down.
It turned out to be “Prometheus,” more than 5,000 years old, and known to conservationists as the most ancient living thing on earth. A sapling when the Sumerians created mankind’s first written language, it had now been pointlessly destroyed.”

After news broke on Monday that Mr. Carney is headed for the Bank of England, London’s The Daily Telegraph ran a story under the headline “New Bank of England Governor Mark Carney’s wife: an eco-warrior who says banks are rotten,” pulling from articles she has written for her eco-conscious website and for Canada’s own iPolitics as recently as Nov. 19.”

  22. Our state broadcaster just can’t help themselves.In today’s sory about ‘vote-splitting’ that focused on the Conservative win in Calgary,they included;
” Blogger David Climenhaga of albertadiary.ca, who considers himself a progressive voter and who once worked closely with Crockatt”
Gee,they must be political allies or something like that. No,not at all. Climenhaga was a union fatcat who butted heads with Crockatt at the Calgary Herald. That is like saying Israel has spent a week working closely with Hamas.
Climengha also writes for ‘Rabble’ and he is the guy who went after Ezra Levant for the ‘chinga tu madre’ comment. He is a hardcore leftwing activist.
