  1. Apparently, crude line-drawings aren’t illegal in Germany:

A German court today ruled that images of Prophet Muhammad banned by Islam as idolatrous can be shown at an upcoming far-right rally, a decision that has Berlin police scrambling to prepare for possible clashes at the Saturday event, reported Agence-France Press. The ruling heightens the possibility of violence at the planned “Citizens Movement — Pro Germany” demonstrations after riots broke out and a Danish cartoonist’s life was threatened for publishing cartoons of the Prophet in a Norwegian newspaper in 2005.
Group members are rallying under “Islam does not belong in Germany — stop Islamization” in Berlin on Saturday, according to The Associated Press.

  2. Not a reader tip, just a commentary on the musical selection. Pieces like this are so important…they are memories of a much simpler era, one that many might consider to have been a better life. I suppose that is why I like watching old movies.
Growing up as a kid in 50’s, I had so much freedom, and no fears that anything untoward would happen. I left the house on my bike in the morning and wasn’t expected back until dinner.
Contrasting that with the lives of my own children growing up, there is no question who had a better childhood, even though as a kid I came from a poor post-war family and my own kids grew up in privilege.
There is no solution of course, but I fear what my grandchildren are going to have to face as they progress through life.
But thanks for the musical submission…it was pleasant.

  3. I Like America: one of my happy childhood memories. My siblings and I would sing along, quite the mimics—not having a clue what the lyrics meant. In some cases, maybe just as well!
Noel Coward’s a genius and such fun to listen to. Thanks, EBD, for the journey down memory lane.

  4. Thanks for the Noel Coward, EBD.
He’d never tasted cellophane, either, till he struck the U.S.A.!
NC was a favourite of my grandmother and I knew the lyrics to most of his songs at the age of eight — without any idea what I was singing about. His tunes were zippy and rhymed: ‘good enough for me!

  5. P.S. Bruce, I’ve just read your fine post. We obviously grew up at about the same time: such freedom! Honestly, kids today have cabin fever: they’re never out of sight of an adult. The results are not pleasant.
And imagine children ten and under today, belting out Noel Coward’s non-PC songs: their parents would probably be reported to the CAS. My “Noel Coward” days were ones of innocence and safety. I miss them.

  6. We knew democrats would do something like this right before the election,
Obama has just “created” almost 2 million new democrat voters
    From PBS newshour transcript,
    JUDY WOODRUFF:
Yesterday was the first day they could apply for deportation waivers under changes announced by President Obama earlier this summer. Under the new program, young illegals will not be deported if[…]
JUDY WOODRUFF: So I read today that
about 1.7 million young people were eligible […] How good a job did the government do of getting the word out about this?

  7. RE: Noel Coward–Thanks eh!
    Re: Obama.

  8. lookout, LOL! Noel Coward was “current” when we were growing up, making a real name for himself in North America.
What a wizard the guy was: playwright, composer, the most witty of lyricists, singer, actor … His diaries and letters are a compendium of who’s who the world over.
    Where’s the “new” Noel Coward?
I don’t think that’s possible given the mobs of young people with no imagination, plugged into their i-phones, i-pads, video games, and a plethora of other distractions. Their vocabulary’s probably about 1/10 (if that) of Coward’s and so many others of his generation.
    Sigh.

  9. It was inevitable this would turn out like this. I said it the first day. Islam is incompatible with Civilization standards of Humanity. Any cult is. Just ask a David Korash or Jim Jones. If they had an empire this is what it would have ended up as well.

  10. “The Mantle of Leadership Has Shifted: Romney, Ryan Govern in All but Name
“In the first week since Paul Ryan joined Mitt Romney on the Republican ticket, something subtle yet fundamental has happened to the country–something not yet reflected in poll numbers or punditry: the mantle of leadership has shifted.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden (certainly the latter) occupy office but cannot be said to govern in any meaningful way beyond formalities. Obama avoids the media; Biden has been sent back to Delaware; and their vast auxiliary army of super PACs and community organizers is reduced to petty sniping and personal attacks. No one expects any truly new ideas or proposals to come out of the Obama campaign anymore. It is telling that the only real debate this week was between Romney and Ryan’s Medicare policies, not Obama’s.”

MARIKANA, South Africa — The police killing of 34 striking platinum miners in the bloodiest security operation since the end of white rule cut to the quick of South Africa’s psyche on Friday, with searching questions asked of its post-apartheid soul.
Newspaper headlines screamed “Bloodbath”, “Killing Field” and “Mine Slaughter”, with graphic photographs of heavily armed white and black police officers walking casually past the bloodied corpses of black men lying crumpled in the dust.”

    Wave of Suicides Shocks Greece”
“The lines that Dimitris Christoulas wrote in a suicide note are engraved into a marble plaque.
The government has annihilated all traces for my survival, which was based on a very dignified pension that I alone paid into for 35 years with no help from the state. I see no other solution than this dignified end to my life so that I don’t find myself fishing through garbage cans for my sustenance.
The words “Dimitris’ gesture cannot be repeated” are written on a piece of paper above the plaque. But his gesture is repeating itself on an almost daily basis.”

  13. Neo-AGW Science Report: is rapeseed not canola?

“Biofuel fails EU sustainability test, German researchers claim”
“Study says EU-grown rapeseed biodiesel falls under 35% marker, adding weight to calls to end food biofuels”
“The growing row over biofuels is ready to flare up again with German researchers claiming to have found evidence that European-produced biodiesel does not meet the sustainability targets claimed by Brussels.
Two experts at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena say eight out of their 10 tests on locally produced rapeseed biodiesel failed to show the 35% greenhouse gas savings promised. In most cases it was under 30%. The use of biofuels would be further undermined when the EU emissions target increases, as planned, to 50% in five years’ time.
Gernot Pehnelt and Christoph Vietze also claim their work has been undermined by a lack of co-operation from the European Union which they believe is on the defensive over championing local energy crops.
“Our results indicate that the ‘sustainability’ of rapeseed biodiesel in the interpretation of the [EU’s] renewable energy directive is at best questionable and in most scenarios simply unjustifiable,” said Pehnelt.”
