  1. Who’s your daddy?

    Wednesday morning the Chicago Republican Party held a press conference to discuss a discrimination and human rights complaint it filed with the Illinois Attorney General, Lisa Madigan, against Chicago 1st Ward Alderman Proco “Joe” Moreno.
    The complaint is in response to Alderman Moreno’s recent Chicago Tribune editorial in which he outlined his intent to discriminate against a local resident who is applying to open a Chick-fil-A restaurant in his ward. Moreno writes that he will not approve a zoning permit for the resident businessman due to Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy’s personal religious view that marriage is a between a man and a woman.
    The Chicago GOP complaint cites three laws from the Illinois Criminal Statute that Moreno has allegedly violated and encourages Madigan’s office to take up an investigation and bring charges against Alderman Moreno.

    During Mitt Romney’s overseas visit earlier this week, 86 percent of the coverage on ABC, CBS and NBC “emphasized Romney’s perceived gaffes,” according to a content analysis of 21 major news stories by the Media Research Center, which also compared Mr. Romney’s trip to a similar excursion made by President Obama in 2008.
    The results: The broadcast networks committed 53 minutes of almost entirely negative coverage to Mr. Romney, and 92 minutes of “gushing” to Mr. Obama.
    “The near unanimous negativity of their coverage is as outrageous as it is transparent,” observes the center’s founder Brent Bozell. “It’s impossible to look at the fawning coverage of Obama’s trip in 2008 compared to the sliming Romney has taken in 2012 and not see a clear agenda on the part of the liberal media.”

    Manufacturing gaffes is a lot easier than manufacturing jobs, which is why the media has switched from fake optimism about the economy to fake pessimism about Romney’s competence. While it takes a lot of work to open a factory that manufactures shoes or microprocessors, manufacturing a gaffe factory is very easy.
    Step 1. Call something that a candidate has done a gaffe.
    Step 2. Report on the gaffe claim that your media outlet just made. Do not call it a claim, treat it as a verified fact that everyone has already acknowledged.
    Step 3. Turn the gaffe reporting into the major issue by talking about it all the time. Interview experts who are willing to back up your gaffe claim.
    Step 4. Fire constant questions at the candidate to force him to acknowledge the gaffe. If he discusses the issue in any way, describe him as apologizing or walking back his previous statements. Print essays that accuse him of being an incompetent flip-flopping wimp. If he refuses to discuss it, accuse him of stonewalling and print essays that accuse him of living in denial because he refuses to admit what “everyone” already knows. Either way you’ve proven that he’s a bad person.
    Step 5. Repeat step 1 several times. Then begin reporting on a “Pattern of Gaffes”, a “Pattern of Stonewalling” and a “Pattern of Flip-Flopping”.

  10. Good for the GOP in Chicago; they are right to open the Chick-fil-A ‘event’ up as a clear violation by the government of First Amendment rights, and, furthermore, a violation by the government of the right to work.
    As for Harry Reid, as you suggest, a good question to ask him would be along the lines of:
    ‘Have you stopped beating your wife’?
    The Obama campaign is focusing on Romney as a person, trying to obliterate the economic and political issues – and trying to set up Obama as a ‘likable person’. I’ll bet that soon, something will emerge that sets up Obama as a victim and deserving of some outpouring of pity and aid. Hmm. We’ll see.

    The impression I get from all of this is that it is an attempt to link “free market” and “religion trumping reason” in the public mind.
    The truth is that support for the free market is based on reason. It enables each individual to use his or her own judgment regarding the value of material goods and services. Price signals are essential for the proper functioning of the economy. All progress comes from the efforts of those who produce more or better or cheaper goods and services, and the only thing they have to guide them are price signals.
    The alternative, government intervention, replaces freedom with coercion, usually by incompetent or corrupt politically appointed party hacks. This is completely irrational. It distorts the market and diminishes productivity. If productivity declines, it can destroy an economy.

    First of all, the true root cause is socialism, which the natives had imposed on them before anyone else.
    Given that billions are spent on aboriginals every year, but some reserves perpetually don’t seem to have much to show for it, “not enough money” is a ridiculous comment from the Star, and an investigation into possible mismanagement is far from “unreasonable”. It sure looks like this judge is making a political decision, which is supposed to be a strict no-no. Maybe, after the Supreme Court disgraced itself by doing precisely this in the Insite decision last fall, we can expect a lot more of this, which is an ugly turn.
    Will any attempts by governments to find out what recipients of largesse did with it be met with court cases in future?
    But there could be a bright side.
    Issue: Energy.
    Problem: Wind and sun investments are expensive and unproductive.
    Solution: They’re the “wrong” solution to the problem of creating a reliable energy supply for Ontarians.
    Et cetera.

    Mr. Martin refers to Mr. Nikiforuk as a “Governor General’s award winner” and to The Tyee as “British Columbia’s outstanding on-line newspaper”. The Torstar editorial claims that the Federal Court ruling is “in line with what Canadians instinctively knew at the time”.
    Why add this stuff? It’s fine to mention it and all that, but it doesn’t add anything: the arguments need to stand on their own. Trying to burnish the credibility of their own perspective by wrapping themselves in the flag with references to so-called “Canadian values and institutions” (meaning 1960s Liberal constructions) seems odd to me, unless they feel that Canadians don’t believe in these things anymore and need reminding. Sort of like whistling past the graveyard…
    People I know, all of whom love their country, are more in line with your thinking, which isn’t negative or unreasonable, but practical: we’ve tried all that other stuff, it doesn’t work and, in many cases, is patently ridiculous; let’s get on with some alternative solutions that put more responsibility on the individual for outcomes in their lives.
    Chief Attleo’s recent re-election suggests that the First Nations have come to some of the same conclusions. As far as Mr. Martin’s implied attempt to brand Mr. Harper’s faith as “un-Canadian” is concerned, all of that is very old hat — the Liberals have used that schtick since the rise of the Reform Party. Where has it gotten them?

  26. Senator Harry Reid has claimed that an investor in Romney’s former private equity firm has told him the Republican presidential candidate paid no taxes for a decade.
    Reid would not identify the Bain Capital source and has acknowledged he can’t confirm if the allegation is true.
    But he still discussed it on the Senate floor.

    Romney is a selfish, greedy, uncaring billionaire who loves breaking up companies and sending the jobs overseas.
    Obama is a caring man who is working hard to fix America. But the evil George W. Bush so deeply wrecked the economy that it’s going to take longer than 4 years to fix everything. Please give the poor guy a chance to do so. After all, he is a genius and will eventually sort things out.
    Folks, denial is clearly more than a river in Egypt but this message is resonating with at least 45% of voting Americans. 🙁

    And they are ‘helped’ by the fact that Romney held jobs in the private sector and thus, can be tainted with the view that the private sector is just in it for greed. [The public sector, of course, is all about Service To The People – and that includes trips to Las Vegas and lots of golf for Obama.]
    Obama, who has never held a job in the private sector, is defined as ‘in service to the people’. And as not interested in profit.
    This is basic Democrat and Obama campaign style. In addition, there has to be the defamation and vicious smearing of your opponent. The election is all about ‘making it personal’.
    I think that soon, we’ll also see Obama undergoing some crisis, a personal emotional crisis, which will be geared to one thing only: votes. What will it be? One of his children becoming ill? A racist attack against him? Whatever it will be, it will be emotional, personal, and geared to one thing only: ignore the economy and focus on emotion, pity-the-victim. Watch for it.

    I completely agree that the Star editorial comment about what Canadians “instinctively knew” is an outrageous fiction. I’d bet most readers would instinctively roll their eyes upon coming across it.
    I’ve always disliked Lawrence Martin, but I don’t take issue with his adding a factoid about Andrew Nikiforuk and a quickie opinion about the Tyee. Many columnists on all sides of the political spectrum write like this. I probably would too.
