Scratch A Leftist

Lawrence Solomon;

Earlier this week at a Pennsylvania rally sponsored by Jewish Americans for Obama and headlined by Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the 1,000 Jews in attendance in a synagogue auditorium heard one speaker portray the Republican Party as theocratic anti-Semites who didn’t believe in the separation of church and state; another Democrat described his experiences with anti-Semites in Arizona.
The message — that Republicans and their ilk are anti-Semites — is a familiar one. Jews have long believed that right-wingers tend to be anti-Semites, whether they identify as Nazis, members of the Ku Klux Klan, John Birchers, conservatives, evangelicals, or Republicans. At the height of the Tea Party movement, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi characterized the protesters as Nazis, saying “You be the judge. They’re carrying swastikas and symbols like that to a town meeting on health care.” On an earlier Bill Maher show, New York’s Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer joked that most anti-Semites vote Republican.
But today, many Jews are no longer laughing along. The anti-Semite card that Democrats have played so deftly over the years — the single-biggest reason Jews provide Democrats with more than 50% of their campaign funding — looks phony to many Jews. When Schultz got up to speak in praise of Obama, the normally sedate Jewish audience heckled her, leaving her visibly rattled.

  1. What an absolute and total load of horse $h1t. What difference does it matter if a racist is Dem.or Rep. or Lib or Con. A racist or bigot is just that!!! Plain effing stupid! This class warfare that is being played out on both sides of the border is so counter productive to good govt. (if there really is such a thing) that little if anything is being done.
What ever happened to govt. serving the people? We hired these pukes but it seems damned hard to get rid of them once they’ve taken their place at the trough. This whole Jewish/ anti semite nonsense is yet another way to divide and conquer and we’re too effing stupid to see it. Maybe I’m missing the point here but doggamn it we’ve got to get some personal responsibility and elected accountability back and RFN.
Again, this whole Republican antisemite thing is simply a way to perpetuate the class warfare that has become so firmly entrenched in our thinking. It’s time to push the reset button and start the process all over. Again, I apologize if I’ve missed the point but that’s what I gleaned from it.

  2. Riddle me this. Most universities in both the United States and Canada are so far left they cannot even see the center and many of them have anti Jewish demonstrations then how is it that the left is for the Jew and the right is against.
For the Jews in Canada they should take note that it is the evil Conservatives that gave farmers their rights back gun owners their privacy back and allowed a open vote on gay marriage.
Also the Canadian Conservative Government is the only openly supporter of Israel in the world. Thank God for this because I have become addicted to my Soda Stream and someone needs to defend my supply.
Finally from the hears you sign department. If Debbie Wasserman Schultz is appearing anywhere to support anything then the correct thing is the opposite.

  3. so more and more people are starting to see beyond the hype to the real anti-semitic, anti-business, anti-USA Oblama. It is about time!!

  4. Anything that ‘visibly rattles’ Debbie Wasserman Schultz can’t be all bad.
And @Ford Prefect – My current manager is Jewish and a staunch lefty. We have a good relationship (despite that) and can talk so I asked him one time, “why is it that your people tend vote Dem/Lib when it’s the right side of the equation that is more interested in and committed to your security in the world?”.
Answer: “Because that’s how it’s always been…” Maybe if they ones who vote left here were living in Israel they would have a different opinion.

  5. Politics in America is a cesspool. Congress is dysfunctional and the presidency is held by an anti-American Marxist = yet they retain power by diverting voter’s attentions to a bogus left-right partisan war and keep them divided and unfocused on the real issue that is killing the Republic.

  6. But today, many Jews are no longer laughing along. The anti-Semite card that Democrats have played so deftly over the years — the single-biggest reason Jews provide Democrats with more than 50% of their campaign funding — looks phony to many Jews. Because the Democratic Party of old, of the Jews, no longer exists. The present liberal political milieu is no longer left of centre – that part of the party is gone, the last of it dying out with Bill Clinton. All that is left… is the hard core socialists and the hanger’s on, the rent seekers who will profit, they think, from the largess and entitlements bestowed upon them by supporting the power. There is no moral centre remaining in the left; its all about advantage for some over others, using manufactured outrage. Finally, the sons and daughters of Jews are again seeing the boxcars on the horizon.

  7. Obama has done everything in his power to help the Muslim Brotherhood control as many countries in the middle east as possible. The Brotherhood has vowed to destroy Israel and every Jew on the planet. But only now, when it may be too late are American Jews waking up to Obama’s evil policies. Took em long enough. I thought Jews were supposed to be intelligent. Anyone who cared to look saw what was coming well before it arrived. Obama was kissing Brotherhood behinds from the first day of his presidency.

If there is such a thing as a Jewish Princess…Wasserman is the evil step child..Good she defines a typical Democrat..

  9. It was the left, and especially the democrats, who brought back Arafat from oblivion. Lately it’s been the Republicans, and not Obama, who give support to Israel, both moral and financial, to not give in to surrender to the anti-west Islamics (Hamas, etc), and the dems have failed.
DWS And other dems are pulling a con on Jews. Thanks to the Republicans, Israelis see the US (okay, and Canada!) as still supporting them. Let’s be clear.

  10. IMHO….the mask has dropped and revealed that the US DemoncRATs much like Canada’s Libranos have one agenda and one agenda only….power.
    With the same results……

  11. Ive noticed lately the attacks on prominent Christian Evangelical Pro Israel leaders. Most of the people doing them call themselves anti-Zionist true Christians.
Employing Evangelical terminology to demonize these Ministers.Even as gentle guy like Dave Hunt. These wolves portray them as Catholic NWO (New World Order) ecumenists in bed with the Catholic Church. When really they are just making a United front against the growing Anti-Semitic surge.
Linking strategies to quell this blight.
Some of the accusations border on the insane.
Yet these people pretend they are the true Christians.
They seem to be popping out of no where with sketchy back grounds.
This seems to be the lefts attack on Zionist Christians. In all the rants they say nothing of Islam or pretend it is no problem.
These people are wrecking Israel helping conferences as well Christian teaching, pretty much telling people of faith their spiritual leaders are apostates who are Moosod agents for Israel. This is misinformation work at the highest levels. You can guess where its coming from.
It grows more intricate by the month.
I am including this for the record that Washington is not being idle. Working hard to undermine Christian Jewish relations. As a warning to Christians to be on the outlook for this. To Church Missler , Roger Oakland (hardly a friend of Rome) to just about every pro-Israel minister. They have Blogs where Jew haters can disguise the lies with doctored truth. It all sounds plausible till you dig deeper. I,m just surprised this has not been going on longer.
You can’t even find out any Bio’s of these people running the scare mongering blogs doing this.
There is a lot of infighting in the Christian World but this is concentrated on Israel. I smell the fishy hand of liberals using ex Believer who hate Jews. Perhaps the same id happening in Catholic circles?

Here is just one of them that has sprung up.

  12. The right gets blamed for the Klan, almost exclusively a Democrat organization. The right gets blamed for the Nazis despite the fact that the only people labeling them as right is the left. Hitler and his buddies called themselves socialist and acted like socialists.

  13. I hope that Solomon is correct but I’m convinced it’ll be several more decades of Obama-like Leftism before the majority of American Jews wake up.
Earlier this month I hosted one of my dearest friends and her extended family. All Jewish. 4 from Chicago, 2 from Seattle, and 1 from L.A. I spoke with my friend and her mom. Both are deep-seated Obama supporters through & through. It didn’t matter the topic, they were convinced that Obama can do no wrong and Republicans are *evil*. They’re convinced that the GOP is:
    – anti-women
    – anti anyone-but-rich-people
    – anti-minority

  14. The article behind the second link, by Aryeh Weinberg, is fascinating. It is a picture-perfect portrait of the antiSemite, Obama.

  15. In the gutter world of identity politics, hierarchy is everything. Group rights tend to be mutually exclusive and so where there are winners, there will be losers. For the left, Muslims, Gays, Hispanics, Women, Blacks, Indians, Big Labour, etc now all trump Jews. The DNC, in their arrogant best, likely calculated that Debbie Wassermann (I like Rush’s middle name for her, Blabbermouth) Schultz would be the ticket to maintaining their allegiance. If that isn’t working, no wonder Debbie was visibly shaken. I could understand how someone without any anti-Jewish tendencies upon being exposed to Debbie and learning that she is Jewish feel disposed to leaning in that direction.

  16. …so I asked him one time, “why is it that your people tend vote Dem/Lib when it’s the right side of the equation that is more interested in and committed to your security in the world?”
Great question, because it’s a real puzzler. And the answer is, because liberals are liberals FIRST, and jewish, gay, lesbian, transgender, feminist, or {insert your favorite label or minority here} SECOND.

“And the answer is, because liberals are liberals FIRST, and jewish, gay, lesbian, transgender, feminist, or {insert your favorite label or minority here} SECOND.”
Indeed! I have seen it here growing up….there were folks who were not the Canadians or Christians they claimed to be but in the final analysis were….LIBERALS first, second and always.

  18. The rationale behind the historic support of jews for the democratic party and leftist causes in general is that Jews are acutely aware of their minority status and as a minority they have supported the dems and the left because they are seen as the party and ideology that has been the friend/supporter/protector of minorities.
This is very much a debateable claim, but it is undebatable that that is the perception of a large majority of americans and even larger majorities of minorities.
Like Nixon made the case that the south would be better represented by the GOP and that the south needed to get over the fact that lincoln was a republican and that the dixiecrats were being taken for granted by the liberal northern democrats, so to can romney and the GOP make a similar case – and is making that case – to minorities both visible and otherwise.
The flagrant disrespect of the jewish minority’s feelings towards isreal and judaism in general by Obama et al may have pushed the jewish community to a tipping point.
If it has, then it means political disaster for the Dems just as nixon’s southern strategy did for them starting in ’68.

  19. So Debbie Wasserman-Shultz feels like Sgt. Shultz…
    and Obama is Colonel Klink.
Looks like its going to be a barn burner election…

  20. Skip @ 11:30 am, “Finally, the sons and daughters of Jews are again seeing the boxcars on the horizon.” That is a pretty profound statement. It seems when looking around and seeing the various news items that every year the anti-Semitics are coming out more into the open in our universities and in our left political parties. It seems that many Jews are ignoring this and have a lemming like avoidance of what is staring them in the face. They are hoping that it will go away. It never does.
I would add to this that Christians should also be looking into the future to see the boxcars taking them to reeducation camps.

  21. Sasquatch: “.. liberals are liberals FIRST, and jewish, gay, lesbian, transgender, feminist, or {insert your favorite label or minority here} SECOND.”
In the area I live in the “favorite label” would be Roman Catholic. Doesn’t matter if they complain a bit before the election, once they’re in the booth they check the Liberal candidate.

  22. I would pay good money to watch that douche DWS get heckled by a Jewish crowd.
Thanks to the Internet, they must have gotten tired of being taken for granted.

  23. I have several Jewish friends that I consider close. I’ve been to Jewish weddings and funerals, and I’ve been invited to break bread during the Shabbat (which I consider a great honor).
I make no secret that I’m a conservative Christian. The usual reaction is “Oh but you’re ok, you’re not like them“, which as far as I can tell is some kind of bogeyman caricature for those eeevil Republican WASPs that want to turn the country into The Handmaid’s Tale.

  24. I’ve seen endless speculation re: why Jews support democrats.
IMHO the answer, as stated in the article, comes in three letters.
    FDR.
It begins and ends there. By policy and by action, He was actually the first “jewish” president. No actually jewish president would dare to run such an overtly jewish-aligned and supportive White House in today’s world.
Full disclosure. My parents are jewish, and I was brought up jewish. I can’t count myself as such now, as I am an atheist.

  25. Addendum: Those so inclined might wish to read Philip Roth’s “The Plot Against America.” It’s a good story it its own right, but it displays the most fawning Roosevelt worship anyone could imagine. He is literally portrayed as god-like in this alterate history telling of how Nazi-aligned fascism nearly takes over the USA.
Philip Roth is the classic Democrat-supporting Jew of the last generation, and an intellectual leader for the last generation. I believe he no longer represents the mainstream of of North American jewry.

  26. gellen – Catholics vote Catholic. You’re back in the 1970’s. I’m a Catholic. I and many of my Catholic friends vote far Right of Liberal these days.
    Time to update your info.

  27. Sorry – make that “Catholics vote Liberal”???
Must remember to review before posting!!

  28. I’m glad to see a post about Lawrence Solomon’s writing, which I feel deserves much more attention from conservatives, particularly in Ontario, than it gets.
Energy Probe’s position during the Harris years was for privatization of Ontario Hydro (now more properly, its successor companies), a view which has long suffered under the weight of the cabal of status-quo interests that wield so much influence over the McGuinty government. His views on Hydro were, I think, greatly influenced by Maggie’s privatization of the Central Electricity Generating Board and other utility companies in the UK.
I think he would agree that he’s no conservative’s conservative, but his remedies have a heavy reliance on non-state, market-based solutions to problems, particularly environmental protection. Overall, I’d call him one of us.
On the issue in this particular column, I’d say it’s best not to gainsay him — he’s thought about it and he knows his facts.

  29. old lori – what bothered me about that book was Roth’s apparent belief that Americans in flyover country would engage in murderous pogroms given the slightest encouragement. Which is the mentality under discussion, isn’t it?

  30. Black Mamba. I forgot about that aspect of the book, but you’re quite right.
It seems to me, based on my relatively limited travels and my very extensive exposure to media from all over this continent, that if there is any place where I am likely to get lynched, it is most likely at the hands of some inner city leftist “Occupy” type movement, infiltrated with Islamists and conspiracy theorists, and least likely would in a small flyover town where people actually form a community.

  31. I admire the Jews very much, but there are some constants in the world. Jewish support of Democrats is one of those constants that I don’t think will *ever* change, no matter how shallow and incompetent the person is they are supporting.
It is mystery to me why Jewish voters support Obama – a complete an utter mystery. These are people who are normally very intelligent and wise.
