  1. Most of the designers are of the persuasion prefers to date teenage boys, so it’s no wonder they design for women who look the same.
One of the most repelling ones to me is Milla Jojovich. I absolutely cannot fathom her popularity, as she looks to me rather like a younger teenage boy who cross dresses. Ick.

  2. Didn’t watch the thingy, but I’m goning to go out on a limb. Most fashion industry dudes find women gross, and think they would be slightly less gross if they looked like very young men. Starving models have no curves. That’s always been my assumption.
I think Coco Chanel once said something to that effect. Of course she’s down as a “homophobe”.

  3. Never mind all that Kate …. I stopped reading every one of your posts years ago … all I can say is that you should be appointed as a Senator in our Canadian Parliament …. then on the side you could raise those wonderful puppies and do some art work when you felt like it. Thank you for letting me give you my opinion of you. may God Bless you in everything you strive to do Kate. You have rare talent.
Love from Manitoba … of all places …. Arnie.

  4. I think it’s reasonable to assume that women, who are the consumers of the products of the women’s fashion industry, buy more of said product from companies whose advertisements feature thin women. If female consumers were more disposed to pay for products that use heavier (i.e. normal) women in their ad campaigns, you’d see a lot more of those kind of women in ads.
John Robson is entirely correct when he notes that ads in magazines directed at men — sports and fitness, MMA, boxing, fishing, hunting magazines, etc., — that use images of women to sell products to men tend to feature women with curves and smiles, as opposed to stick-thin models who look like they’re bored/cynical to the point of being suicidal.

  5. Sean and Black Mamba hit the nail on the head.
Seeing as most of the designers of women’s clothes are gay — and like the look and everything else of adolescent men — they design for their fantasy date.
My question is, why is women’s clothing so gawd-awful ugly and why do we have legions of badly dressed, hideous females, fat and thin, walking our streets and school hallways?
My only answer is that deep-down, or maybe it’s overt, gay men don’t really like women, unless they’re Judy Garland or Cher, and have won the war of the sexes by draping us in foul wrappings that make us look like boys or bag ladies on a bad day.
Curves and healthy frighten and repel gay designers.

  6. BATB
That’s why I sew my own clothes and that of my children.
THey don’t go to malls, and think the way most women dress is ugly, doesn’t fit well and looks cheap. And are generally impervious to the fashion industry as depicted in magazines
I buy 4-5 items per year (not including underwear). That’s it

  7. Whereas I’m generally opposed to increased government regulation, to level the playing field there should be a mandatory minimum BMI for fashion models in order to prevent bodily self-abuse occurring under pressure from the industry.

  8. Yes it is mostly the gay thing but I think that liberals have messed up things so much that there is now a sort of cult of ugliness especially with young people.
Too many tattoos is ugly ( especially on the neck )
    Face piercings are very ugly.
    Black nail polish is ugly.
    Super skinny models are ugly.
The clothes they wear are ugly.
    Modern art is ugly.
and so on and so forth.
It is a cult of ugliness…

  9. I agree with Sean as well. There are many gay men in the top echelons of the fashion industry and they are drawn to teenage boys. Marilyn Monroe would be deemed overweight if she appeared on a catwalk today.
Since gay men are more likely to be angry than gay in mood shouldn’t we call them ‘angry’ as in the ‘angry lobby group’ ‘angry pride’ etc….

  10. Also notice how all the boys and men in fashion ads look very feminine.

  11. Interesting that this point comes up today, I was having this discussion with neighbours two days ago. My wife and I just ran a half-marathon on Sunday. I think it’s fair to make the assumption that people who can run 21 km are a good sample of the healthy to very healthy. Most of the woman running in our general area had curves and were not stick thin. Many of them had a bit of “junk in the trunk”. The range of body types was what I would deem typical, minus the obese. Healthy people come in a diverse range of shapes and sizes. I feel for young woman who are held up to an unrealistic and most likely unhealthy standard.
I also find it interesting that the woman that I enjoy looking at, the types they’d put in a men’s magazine, are curvy. All the men I know agree that the girls that are of interest to the fashion industry, girls you’d see in those “top-model” reality shows, are not sexually appealing in any way.

  12. Why dont these little boys and girls get a real job….seriously men making women clothing. The fashion industry, like Hollywood is full of perverts and just plain weird people.

  13. It is a cult of ugliness…

    Agreed-
No way a man (6.2) 250 lbs could go to bed with one of those women,
    fall asleep,
roll over and crush the piss out of her.

    NATIONAL ENQUIRER-
LARGE MAN ARRESTED FOR CRUSHING SUPER MODEL!

  14. Another thing is that they are all so tall. I’m not afraid of heights as much as widths, but it would be nice to see a model that wasn’t flirting with 6 feet.

  15. LOL. My mom said decades ago that gay fashion designers make their female models look androgynous because that’s what they personally find attractive. Lilly’s just stumbling onto this now?

  16. I may have said this previously, but I’ll give it a go again.
If so many women’s fashion designers are effeminate gay men, where are all the butch lesbian men’s clothing designers? I want to see more plaid lumberjack shirts in the local stores. And comfortable shoes!

  17. poor poor women lol. They are ugly if they are fat , they are ugly if they are thin so just stay in the midlle somewhere ladies!
How about beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
i see many fat women are absolutly treasured by skinny stick men and fat men with the little skinny women . As for fashion all i see is teen aged girls dressing like slut’s plain and simple becasue that is what the boy’s of today have told them (women s lib gotta love it) and that is what the feminist movement has told them so they do as they are told.
It is funny when you see a women or teen dressed conservativly or nicley she usually is holding hands with a decent young man or husband and is hated by other women they call her a slut. Too funny!, those same women retreat with their “boy toy” to the bed of his pick up where she will service him and all his buddies so long as they tell her she is beautiful. Very sad indeed.
I know i have been there and done that, that is a reality of today trust me! Women of today young women especially are so lost and mislead and mistreated.
The whole system is broken men are scumbag’s or limp wristed pansies and women are trampy slut’s who scoff at properly dressed females. feminism, homosexuality , liberalism of women has absolutly destroyed our youth’s idea and image of themselves. All we have now is little slut’s trying to fit in with there bigger sister slut’s who are trying to fit in with the goldigging cougars.
The men are no different look at the show’s on t.v. glorifing men who live at home in there thirties it’s called mamas house it is about three manhatten men who are in thier thrities living with there parent’s and all they do is screw women and leave them there mom does there laundry , cooks ,and cleans up after them .
What a discrace All of it!!

  18. Perhaps the choice of body image reflects the perverse tastes of the fashon indistry oligarchs.
I hate to see women become slaves to to this type of morbid vanity and culture. It is one thing to dress in a manner that displays your sense of self respect and style, it is quite another to mimic the psychosis of the fashon cult to whom clothing is more of a “costume” in which to satisfy ones penchant for exhibitionism than anything appealing to well adjusted individuals.
In short the fashon industry (cult?) full of freaks and vipers and no properly adjusted woman would subject herself to being controlled by such neurotic trends.

  19. The problem is that women with curves are VERY HARD to design for – you have to have really good design and sewing skills to design for a woman with a bust and hips, short legs and body – you know like 99% of women!!!
Most designers have NO SKILLS in that area. Just watch Project Runway when the ‘designers’ are challenged to design for real women – they go into hysterics!!! It is much easier to design for a flat board than deal with women who have curves and are not size 2 (but that horror of size 14!)

  20. I’ve come to the conclusion over the years that the people who decide things in the fashion industry -hate- women. They design clothing which is at best completely impractical (no pockets) and at worst is dangerous to the wearer (SHOES!!!). I assume this is pure spite, no other explanation makes any sense.
But best of all, North American women in large part LET THEM DO IT. Women actually wear these clothes and diet like starvation victims to fit in to them. Which is insane.
Women from India and China by contrast tend to be more resistant to this nonsense. Which is one major reason why I have more respect for immigrants these days, they refuse to drink the frickin’ bong water being served up in our modern media.
When was the last time you saw an Indian girl with knees bigger than her thighs from bulimic dieting? There may be some, but rare like unicorns.
Just one more reason to reiterate that immigrants are not the problem in Canada. LIBERALS and the mass media are the problem.
Incidentally one of the pictures in the video is Gwyneth Paltrow. She’s got osteoporosis these days. Due entirely to insane dieting. Despite a brutal workout regimen. She’s in the Avengers movie this week, I’ve seen her looking a lot better.

  21. “In short the fashon industry (cult?)”
They are apparently some sort of Puritan monks. Throwing all the work on perfection of human body in the Classicism into the garbage can? If you really want to know how real beauty of a woman looks like you have to see up close breasts on sculptures of Aphrodite.
Kate….I really appreciate that you venture into aesthetics on your blog. I am tired of hearing about “social justice” and nobody asks how much injustice in Canada is committed against form, color and composition. Next: “pee and poo” palettes in Canadian houses.

  22. Yeah well I don’t shave every day…
    Most women never mention it…
One day one did and the other gal said…”Hey he’s not on a date!”
There is a tendency for the women to generally always be turned out well…..men being clean shaven, neat and well dressed is impressive but I suspect that even women subconsiously view it as effeminate.
However the most important element for a woman is to SMILE….guys not so much.

  23. Well we had Heroin chic in the mid-90’s so it’s only logical we have meth emaciation in the 2010’s.

  24. The people who are claiming that women are victims of the gaytriarchy seem to be forgetting that those stick-thin models are used to sell clothes to women. Women — exclusively — and not gay men are the ones buying women’s clothes. If *women* were just as likely to buy clothes from labels that used normal-sized female models in ad campaigns and on runways, there’d obviously be a lot more normal-sized female models.

  25. Its always been a Mystery to me why Women allow Gay men to dictate what they wear as fashion?

  26. A happy gay seems to be an oxymoron. I’ve never heard of one.

This is true, I think. Nor do “gays” have real PRIDE which is why they have PRIDE parades. And Vancouver is not a world class city ‘cos real world class cities don’t say they’re world class cities. And “gays” don’t really want “gay marriage”, they just want society’s blessings, coerced if necessary.
EBD makes a very sound argument here. If these models didn’t work on women they wouldn’t be as they are. The counter argument, tho, is that the consuming women have these messages foisted on them. My wife tells me that women’s clothes are comparatively way more expensive than men’s. So there could be some kind of free market distortion involved here, not that I’d want to intervene.

  27. The female form; I could study it all day long.
With a photographer’s eye, most members of the female persuasion can be photographed to look good without PS. Don’t get me wrong, Photo Shop is a blessing for that blemish or stray hair but you have to have a basically good photo to begin with and that involves putting the person in the picture. The eyes are the windows to the soul and if you can draw out that person then you have a shot.
The “thin is in” craze has also taken a strange turn, thanks to the technology of today, a lot of classic female forms in art are being reproduced today and Photo Shopped. That is an abomination.

  28. Honestly, in your every day lives at home or at work, how many women can you say are influenced by the fashion experts? If you know of five, then you must live in a large city.
If I walk through the mall in the nearby small-size city, I’d be surprised if I saw one.
The main street of my hometown – none.
Where I live now, small village in the sticks, comfortable is fashionable.
Fashion seems to be very important when choosing a wedding dress, then it’s downhill from there.

  29. Fishy Al @11:10 – as noted scholar and sapphist Camille Paglia pointed out two decades ago, the notion that gay men, as a group, have anything – anything at all – in common with lesbians, as a group, is deeply inaccurate.

    Your comments are very true.
Designing patterns to fit curves is similar to architecture. It requires a lot of geometry.
Math is hard and most designers cannot sew or translate their designs into clothing. THey have minions for that.
Also, I have a theory that as more and more clothing is being constructed in China, the lines and cut tend to favour the Asian body which is more rectangular and square. Just look at how jeans fit now as compared to the 70’s.
