Mulcair compared Black’s case to that of Gary Freeman, an American-born man who has been denied re-entry into Canada because of a criminal record. The 63-year-old was involved with the Black Panthers, and was extradited to the U.S. in 2008 and pleaded guilty to shooting a police officer in 1969.

Occupy is union/marxist-anarchist astroturf which public sector unions hope to intimidate government with when needed – it’s a step beyond the right to strike – it’s the right to intimidate with street politik to force public policy changes.
    The Dips OTOH are now a Quebec centered statist socialist junta who have a hard time relating to unionists, greens and their traditional base.   13. Thomas Mulcair is showing his desperation every time he opens his gob. The hatred towards Black in no small measure is due to his Conservative roots.
    Why can’t Black have dual citizenship? When so many who come here or marry someone from another country hold duals? Mulcair himself holds a French citizenship because of marriage.
    We are inextricably linked to Britain, we are a Constitutional Monarchy with their Queen as our head of state. There should be no rules to prevent a Canadian citizen from accepting a Peerage from Britain. Most never knew there was such a stipulation until the vindictive Chretien dug it up.
    Chretien himself accepted an honour from the Queen
    without shirking. In his world it’s not about the giver, it’s the receiver.
    If we started a line-up for hypocrites Chretien and Mulcair would qualify.

    Black is 100X the man Mulcair will ever be, and I’m delighted he is coming back to Canada.

  20. Mulcair’s first loyalty, like that of most Quebecois, is linguistic: to the French language. That means that his French citizenship is sacred; it publicly shows the meaning and centre of his loyalty.
    His public hostility to Black is, in my view, meant to show his hostility to two things. First, to The Wealthy Evil Corporatists, the 1%, and second, to anglophones or, the English (Black’s title is English).
    It’s all a performance. Mulcair has one ambition, to become Prime Minister. It’s a personal ambition; he’s not interested in Canada. Remember, his first loyalty to linguistic and that means, to francophones.
    Occam- are you saying that the NDP are now moving away from unions? Unions are big and all powerful in Quebec and are behind the student strikes. I agree with your description of Quebec socialism.

  21. Conrad Black is a British patriot, driven out of Canada by traitors in Ottawa. He is innocent of any crime, unless you count calling Liberal incompetence, corruption and treachery what they were. The Queen by the Grace of God of Canada surely understands this. She (on the advice of her ministers) can decide to grant her protection to Black at any time. I would advise her to do so posthaste. He is needed in Canada as much as he ever was.
    Mulcair is an Irish and French Canadian cur with poor impulse control and a turncoat without shame (but I repeat myself), whose ancestors by rights should have been turned back at Quebec. Let us pray that by the time he thinks it expedient to seek asylum in France the presidency will be occupied by a patriot like Marine Le Pen. The Queen can let French immigration authorities teach him that nobody loves a traitor.

    has screwed up badly is in bad-mouthing George W. since his incarceration. It is petty of him, I think, to damn George Jr., for not giving him a pardon when he left the presidency. Nor do I think that Conrad has always done things by the books, the way the rest of us have been made to do. There is definitely a law for the rich and another for those who can’t afford expensive (and smart) lawyers. That said, he certainly has a greater right of return than do cop and medic murderers.

  40. Freeman lived and worked in Canada illegally for decades. He is a bail-jumping thug who shot and permanently injured a police officer. He has never been a Canadian citizen nor a legal Canadian resident.
    If he wants to immigrate to Canada, he can apply and wait for legal admittance. He should not jump to the head of the immigration queue.

    Nobody without money would have faced the imaginary crimes Black faced.
    My understanding is that any money Black received from Hollinger was approved by the board of directors, the normal test for legality. Note that Black was by no means the best paid executive in businesses listed in the US and his mega millions might even have passed a smell test.
    Where Black went afoul the law was the earnest services law. Even though everything was legal, the question was raised whether the remuneration was paid for earnest services or some presumably unusual effort to enrich himself. This law was judged illegal. To justify their existence the judges maintained one charge plus the obstruction charge which was clearly no such thing.

  43. Any politician who deems that entrepreneurs and capitalists are a greater threat to society than radical activists who’ve committed real violence should be deposed as not only foolish but an impediment to order.
    I truly worry about the welcome the NDP have planned for Khadr.
