There have been countless cover versions in the years since, and almost endless variations on the theme, but there’s nothing like the original classic: from September 30, 1938, here’s Neville Chamberlain’s crowd-pleasing live performance at the Heston Aerodrome.

Ashley Taylor, a TV reporter for South Carolina NBC affiliate WMBF, was recently doing a live segment when, in a dumb prank, a passerby grabbed the mic and said with a goofy grin “I am that n****r!” before walking off. The next day, the reporter’s report on the “attack” was all about how she was the “victim” of a crime:

    “The irony of this attack? I was reporting on a crackdown on crime in Myrtle Beach. Little did I know that I would become the victim…”
    “Every day I tell victim stories to give them a voice, but now I’ve experienced firsthand how important victim’s advocates are…”

    Not to defend the toddler-brained idiot who grabbed who interrupted her report, but…

  3. I will remain ever thankful for my grade 10 history teacher who introduced us to dear Mr. Chamberlaine as the man ‘looking thru rose coloured glasses’. Great history class.

    “I was in a meeting once and I gave an analogy to my staff about my philosophy of enforcement, and I think it was probably a little crude and maybe not appropriate for the meeting, but I’ll go ahead and tell you what I said:
    “It was kind of like how the Romans used to, you know, conquer villages in the Mediterranean. They’d go in to a little Turkish town somewhere, they’d find the first five guys they saw and they’d crucify them.
    “Then, you know, that town was really easy to manage for the next few years.”

  10. Thankfully the UN, EU, Obama administration and the US State Department is taking a firm stand with Iran. I sleep well at night knowing that they will prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
    They have learned the lessons of appeasement, and there will be peace in out time also.
    (Yes, this is sarcasm)

  13. The sad thing about the subject of tonight’s Reader Tips is that leaders like Chamberlain are in charge today and the butcher’s bill will be just as high in the next big one as the last one.

  14. jwkozak91- 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
    We had organized relief efforts from here to tackle the crisis. Drives for food, clothing, hospital equipment, medical supplies, money. Heaven knows it was needed….there’d be no response from the other side to deal with it.
    Over blown? Looking back….perhaps. But the poor saps were pretty much left to their own devices (and not for the first time!)

    Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) has appealed to the Islamist-dominated parliament not to approve two controversial laws on the minimum age of marriage and allowing a husband to have sex with his dead wife within six hours of her death according to a report in an Egyptian newspaper.
    The controversy about a husband having sex with his dead wife came about after a Moroccan cleric spoke about the issue in May 2011…Zamzami Abdul Bari said that marriage remains valid even after death adding that a woman also too had the same right to engage in sex with her dead husband.

    Range Resources is the company that discovered the Marcellus Shale field in Pennsylvania, the biggest natural gas field in America, one of the biggest in world. Range Resources discovered it. This guy, Al Armendariz, claimed that Range Resources’ fracking had contaminated groundwater in Texas. He issued an order to just shut them down, the guy you heard on the tape. The Texas Railroad Commission, which regulates oil and gas drilling in Texas, found no evidence that Range Resources had polluted anything. And finally, just last month, two years after the fact, the EPA withdrew its order and a federal court dismissed the EPA’s case.
