  1. Maybe a subsidised outhouse, with some NDPeer making over 100K/year living in it?? Of course Chow-Chow would have to be one of those living there.
Side question. Why is it a lot of the new Asian immigrants of the last 50+ years(and some born here) are scum bags: Fruit Fly,Chow-Chow,Mar in AB,etc, etc.??

  2. Stephen Marche, the one who penned the love letter to Obama with the lede: “How Can We Not Love Obama?
Because like it or not, he is all of us.”
Layton, the collaborator and enabler of the Conservatives.
I could live with “Conservatives laughed at Layton; they loved his tireless impotence.”

  3. Anyone care to comment on his assertion that we were “this close” to instituting national daycare? If that’s true, I think we all owe Jack Layton a thanks for killing that off. I have two kids that are daycare age and I would never send them to a government run goulag. Could you imagine how terrible it would be?

  4. That article says a lot about the political cocoon of Toronto. The most important thing that the federal government should do is provide universal daycare so that yuppies can have their designer families and still have time for their lattes? And then there is this gem: “While countries that espoused a rampant unchecked capitalism (the U.S.) or an unaffordable socialism (Greece) lie in social and financial ruins, the Canadian model, with its three-party system, is triumphant”. Surely Torontonians must be able to get their worldview from a better source than the CBC. Filling a vacuum left by Layton shouldn’t pose much of a problem.

  5. Two things stuck out for me with this article:
    1. “How We Almost Gave the Tories the Boot: The Inside Story Behind the Coalition” – This is a reference to Layton’s intention, unprecedented in Canadian history, to remove a democratically elected government … and spin it as “perfectly reasonable”. Perhaps “typical” in the legion of totalitarian regimes but not “reasonable” in Canada.
    2. “The Conservative prime minister, elected with barely 40 per cent of the vote….” – There have been 12 other governments in Canada that were elected with less than 40% of the popular vote, yet barely a word has ever been uttered about their supposed illegitimacy.

  6. Rafi Socialism…..love the name.
    1) Because they are calling it socialism, which they always seem to want to avoid
    2) Yup, childlike, utopian and impractical
    3) Admitting that Jack was creating a cult of Personality. It was always about Jack, even in his passing. Chalk Hearts at City Hall dont appear spontaneously, it was co-ordinated and planned. Nothing wrong with it, just admitted the man stage managed his exit for his own purposes, thats all

  7. “The Conservative prime minister, elected with barely 40 per cent of the vote….”
Yup with barley 40% of Canadians even getting off their butts to vote, and nearly 100% of left wing radicals making the vote.
I honestly don’t thing the loony NDP wants ALL Canadians to vote, I highly doubt it would go the way they think.

  8. “a hundred bucks a month for each kid, which must be a joke or an insult; either way, it manages to be hilariously infuriating every month.”
Personally I know of no one who is infuriated, amused or insulted by receiving $100 a month. I suppose there are some, the writer being a prime example, who feel that they are entitled to much more.

  9. Surely Torontonians must be able to get their worldview from a better source than the CBC.
Normal Torontonians do. Problem is, they don’t show up at Queen’s Park to tell Ontario liberals to shove their entitlements up their asses. They work for a living. I don’t know what it will take for them to do what they have to do. Being reduced to a pound of meat a week and three hours of hydro during the winter because Dalton and his cronies spent every penny Ontarians had on themselves and the Third World scum they imported to rig elections and keep decent people out of Queen’s Park, for ten years, just might do it. Heaven knows that’s where the province is headed.
Barring a tough Accurate News and Information Act, the CBC will go on telling liberal elites what they want to hear unless, and until, normal people finally let them know how things are and how things are going to be, and make sure they are heard—by any means necessary.
The week that finally happens will see the last issue, ever, of rags like Toronto Life, before they go the way of the Romanian Communist rag Scinteia. I can’t wait.

  10. all liars to the end. I still think Oliva Chow covered up the AIDS death,
her reluctance to say what he died of says it all

  11. Between Marche’s article and the comments, I love it when Liberals and Dippers argue over who’s more true to left wing principles. What a wonderful thing it is when the one has no principles whatsoever and the other has heads full of pixie dust.
Marche makes the amusing claim about universal daycare that Martin proposed in 2005. That promise had been a liberal one for 15 years and nothing was done about it. The Libs stuck it into the election in 2005 only when they realized they were going down in flames. And quite probably shelved just as quickly as the rest of the Red Book was back in 1993.
Marche makes the implication that the current government is somehow illegitimate with just 40 per cent of voter support. However, he and the rest of his kin never indicated such with all the years of Chretien majorities squeaking through at 35 per cent or so.
But here’s the real point. Marche doesn’t like the fact that Mulcair is likely to win this weekend. Mulcair is the only chance the Dippers have to retain even some of their embarrassment of Quebec seats. If so, then Marche’s beloved Libs are stuck in 3rd party status for the rest of this decade. No longer will Marche get to whisper sweet nothings and expect his drivels to be taken seriously by folks in power. And since the Libs are even on the retreat in Toronto, soon they’ll have no place to dip their toes except in Lake Ontario. A place to swim but not to grow, etc. They’re only purpose in life will be to draw votes from the Dippers.
    Ahhh. Poor baby.

  12. “Layton, the collaborator and enabler of the Conservatives.”
    BINGO
I’ve been saying since Jack’s death that “His legacy will be single handedly delivering the CPC a majority government”.
The facts, the way I see it, is that Jack and Gilles hoodwinked the genius S.Dion into destroying his own party. I believe fully that Jack and Gilles knew that the coalition was a poison pill for the Liberal brand. If you consider Jack’s family ties to the PCs and his friendship with PMSH, it’s easy to draw the conclusion that a CPC government was a small price to pay for being able to hammer the final nail in the Liberal coffin.

  13. justthinkin- Maybe you should actually think before spreading old-fashioned racism. Gary Mar and David Suzuki were born in Canada. Beside that, your comment is off the wall. I disagree with their politics, but that doesn’t make them “scumbags”. There’s probably a better chance you’re a scumbag, since we know almost everything there is to know about them, and nothing about you. The Chinese community is the most honest, hard working community in this country. Jack Layton was lucky his wife didn’t dump his ass years ago. It was her traditional family loyalty that kept her with that dirtbag.

  14. I guess in the new Neo Pagan world we still don’t deify leaders. That will soon be coming! Making them instead. Symbols of the spirit of Man comes close though, with flowers like at pagan shrines. Hey ,if the Romans can make Imperial monsters into gods , its only logical the left makes its leaders into portraits of “All that is good & wise”.

  15. Jack should have known that you can catch more than a cold from a prostitute. I wonder if the prostitutes he frequented were held against their will? Jack wouldn’t have used sex slaves, would he? His Chinese Chow remained loyal to the end.

  16. Indiana,
Layton was a lefty to the core.
I am not aware of any real friendship between Layton and PM Harper.
Any ties between the Laytons and the PCs are long gone.
I think much like Laytons ability to smell a running camera, he sensed an opportunity for power. He would have run right over poor Dion in the end.
Once again, Layton and Dion et al, playing checkers while Harper played Chess.
Layton did help deliver that majority though.

  18. “Tireless Impotence?”
Did Jack’s bicycle get a flat on the way to the rub and tug?

  19. “How We Almost Gave the Tories the Boot: The Inside Story Behind the Coalition” That could also be written as “How we almost started a shooting war in Canada.”

  20. Indiana, the Liberals started down the road to political oblivion long before Layton came along. There were several clear steps.
    1. the Liberals became anathema in the prairie provinces.
    2. the Liberals became anathema in Quebec outside of Montreal.
    3. the Liberals became anathema in BC outside of Vancouver.
    4. Liberal vote declined relentlessly from 2000 onward.
Layton was nothing more than a not-so-friendly push in the direction they were already headed. And the Liberals are going to remain 3rd party as long as all four of the above conditions prevail.

  21. cal2@1:57 – I agree.
The in fighting in the ndp after this weekend will result in a blood bath. It wont mater who wins the Montreal Madman or Backdoor Brian.
The NDP will look like UFC. Bring it!

  22. . coach…”new Asian immigrants of the last 50+ years(and some born here)”.Note the born here(that would be Canada, for your geographic challenge of the day). I love when the left can’t stand the truth coming out.

  23. The left? You moron. I called you on a racist comment, and you think I’m a lefty? You have a low opinion of Conservatives, if you think they’re as hateful and ignorant as you. Fucking twit.

  24. Layton was successful and made the Dips temporarily successful because he built the party image on the cult of personality. Smilin’ Jack put a happy face on the dower socialism and radical base of the party.
That is gone and so are their numbers.
RIP Jack and don’t slam the door on the way out the personality cult socialism will be folloing you shortly.

  25. Amusing article, especially the comments section about it being a Liberal attack.
Jack Layton was a politician/buffoon in Toronto for many years – his legacy there? None.

  26. Buffoon? That describes Layton perfectly. You never did get the feeling that there was much higher level reasoning going on.
