34 Replies to “When Did Social Studies Become Socialist Studies?”

  1. my kids saw it when they where in their early teens. They and their classmates viewed gores movie with deep scepticism and learned to question any and all succeeding attempts to propagandize their class.
Their attitude today is that climate may be evolving(as it always has) but any information given by the gores and suzukis is probably rubbish.
We should all give our kids a bit more credit.

  2. You mean you didn’t recognize the socialism in the social studies classes you took? The most memorable book we had to read back in the early 70s was The Population Bomb. Ever since then I doubt the world population numbers trotted out by the UN.

  3. The teacher’s short, 45-word note has three grammatical errors. Brian’s right: the kids are propagandized for hours each week while the basic academic skills are sidelined. Of course, if the basic academic skills of lots of teachers are compromised, which they are, it’s no surprise that the kids’ skills are too.
“Way down deep, they’re really shallow”, socialist initiatives, such as (pro-gay) “Wear Pink” neighbourhood walks to discourage bullying, anti-Harper, union backed kiddie protests on Parliament Hill, and this “Freeze in the Classroom” day to discourage fuel consumption—haven’t they considered that it might produce the opposite effect?—take up so much time and energy, there’s little time and energy left over for learning the basics, which, after social engineering, is a secondary goal of our left-wing ministries and school boards.
Back to the teacher’s 45-word note: s/he wrote:
“IN result . . .”. That should be, “AS A result . . .”. The advice to the parents was “. . . make sure the children dress WARM:)” That should be “. . . dress WARMLY:).” (“Dress” is a verb. “WarmLY” is the adverb. And there should be a period after the smiley face too! This is basic, grade one to grade three level, grammar.)
Such shoddy, unedited writing by teachers and principals is epidemic these days—from the folks who are supposed to be teaching those skills to our kids. Oy vey!

  4. When we went to school in the sixties the “alarm of the day” was pollution in the great lakes and how business had rendered the lakes unfit to dip your toe; which seemed a tad strange to me since we had just swam in Lake Erie that very summer, with no ill effects. The problem then and the problem now is ciriculum developed by provincial education departments and teachers unions whose sympathies lie more with socialism and Marx than with common sense.

  5. Lilley calls it right when he says socialist studies. These studies are one sided in many if not most schools.
The best way at the moment that we can counter this socialist crap is to buy the film “Not Evil, Just Wrong” and make sure your older grandrugrats or children see it, as well as contribute a couple of bucks toward the fracking film that the producer of Not Evil is making.

Sorry lookout. The teachers (98% of them)are NOT there to teach basic learning skills to our kids. They are there to indoctrinate them for their socialist/facist leaders(unions,eco-cultists,etc). The more dumbed down the kiddies are,the easier they are to manipulate. But even the teachers seem to forget,or more likely, were never taught factual history. Otherwise they would know that in all of history, when their lefty masters get the power, the so-called intelligent ones are the first to disappear.(which if it didn’t mean tyranny and despotism as the cause, might be a good plan).

  7. My niece won a science award debunking climate change, but she lives in Alberta so she’s not a progressive bot.

  8. Teachers have always been NDP supporters!. I graduated high school in 1970 but even in the 1960’s, I had very socialist teachers. Mind you, the female teachers were always very well dressed with very good jewellery – but they did have a poster of Simon and Garfunkel in the classroom and they were always planning their latest 2 month summer vacation to Europe. Thank goodness I came from a very conservative family where my father encouraged us to actually observe what was happening instead of postulating “pie in the sky” comments.

  9. Pseudo science, gay sex, underage sex, Liberalism, socialism, communism, multiculturalism, new age religions including Atheism, Gaia worship and self absorption, anything but the core curriculums we believe we are paying for.
It’s clearly structured indoctrination to degrade and mould the young minds of western children into the “Green aka Red Brigades” of the future.

  10. The Student council at my children’s school pushed for the “sweater day” and the school division directly encouraged it since it controls the heating system from 35 miles away via web connection. Lowering the room temperature throughout the Division will no doubt shave a few hundred bucks off. Next year my kids will have a home day and the division will get a letter complaining that the school is failing to provide a suitable learning environment. My grandfather had heating every day in the one room schoolhouse, and I expect no less for my kids. By the way, “sweater day” used to be an opportunity to collect up old sweaters to give to the poor but I guess they don’t matter so much now.

  11. Teachers unions are dominated by socialists who come through socialist-bent university programs. Did we really expect any different?

  12. “Give me four years to teach the children and the seed I have sown will never be uprooted.”
    -Vladimir Lenin
    School vouchers please….

  13. What passes for education today used to be considered child abuse in a more civil enlightened age – before degenerate left anti-intelect dogmas became socially acceptable.

  14. Shut down the heating in the classroom?
Sorry, but if I had kids at that school, they’d be staying home for the day.
But hey, now here’s an alternative idea to file in the Fat Chance Archives: have the entire staff of the school simply work for free for a day.
Then use the money saved on payroll to pay for – heating!
(Ha ha! As if. I crack myself up!)
Say what you will about those silly old Rae Days in Ontario but at least Premier Bob had the fortitude to just shut the schools down for the day completely. He didn’t force schoolchildren to sit in unheated classrooms.

  15. If your kids school decides to hold a “sweater day”, for all our sakes DO NOT keep then at home!
The teachers and the school board won’t care one bit,BUT if you do send the kids to school, and they are cold and uncomfortable that day, use ammo the Left understands!
File an HRC complaint against the school for your child’s suffering. THAT will get their attention, and old Saul will be gnashing his teeth in Hell as he sees The Enemy using HIS tactics against his people.

  16. I find it amazing that in lefty socialist britain of all places they cannot show An-Altogether-Too_Convenient_Bulls*** without also presenting the opposing view.

  17. Socialist education systems practicing watermelon theocracy. Who would have guessed it?
Good luck trying to get the public schools to match their Gore / WWF /Suzuki / Green Peace content with the Fraser Institute / CEI / Cato / WUWT etc.

  18. Education has been transformed into indoctrination and it begins with the indoctrination of teachers in university. It has been going on for quiet some time and just continues to get worse. It is now equivalent to Mao’s re-education camps, and to think of the amount of tax dollars wasted is disgusting. I can only be thankful that my children are all adults and that it was’t as bad when they went through the system. They were exposed to the usual rubbish but they rejected it without any help from home. In university they all went into science, medicine or engineering to avoid the same. I hope the day will come when parents truly revolt against this and that everyone revolts against wasting tax dollars on propaganda in lieu of education.

  19. It’s been Komsomol for ages. There are around 700,000 people employed by school boards across Canada. That ship can’t be torpedoed, but it should be turned with vouchers, technology, austerity and de-unionization.

  20. Here in NB our students are now being forced to sit through the horrible Story of Stuff. I had an email exchange my my son’s high school principle about a recent forced viewing only to be told that the video is:
“a movie designed to generate discussion surrounding the environment and the implications associated to social issues…in essence the short movie is about sustainability and is commonly used in the school system”
Unfortunately it appears that many of our educational professionals are little more than socialist shills.

  21. too many undercover cop and rcmp and too many sick women act as teacher or both working in toronto board of education
they target children with muslim to put them down by hate and intention
those fools think parents are not watching those biitcchhheeeesss

  23. You’re doomed to disppointment, then, Robert. Rocks don’t learn worth a damn. Maybe try homeschooling your kids instead…

Although Dr. Milton Friedman is in favor of vouchers, some libertarians disagree.
“… school vouchers are just another welfare-state program that would make state involvement in education even more entrenched than it already is”
    Jacob G. Hornberger
For more on why school vouchers are a bad idea see:

  25. Its time to end Educational monopoly by Government.
At least in Alberta you can pick a charter, private, or Religious school.
The curriculum though has been hijacked by Marxists. Those in Charge should be fired & a new one developed on real education not Union socialist sensibilities. With input from parents, real scientists along with those teachers who have proved to be educators. Not School administrative drones.
Particularly ban Unions from have a grain of influence.
They don’t like it hire only non Union.
Make our Provinces Work free zones.

  26. Rizwan:
Your Mr. Hornburger needs to look at the private school model for how well a voucher system can/would work.
Don’t assume that the cultural malaise that infects the current public system runs as rampant in the private one.
Parents who demonstrate an interest in their childrens education would ensure the school’s success with vouchers, just as they already do when the money comes out of their own pockets (even after they have finished paying their taxes).
The main benefit of the voucher system would be to create a competitive market in the education field, which would give parents choices and in doing so raise standards for everyone.
Just as private clinics would improve the health care system, and just as contracting out would improve the delivery of other government services.
Don’t be afraid of a free market.
    Or capitalism.
    Or freedom of choice.
    Or liberty.
    I’m not.

  27. bethesdaguy
I didn’t follow the link but the thought I get is that vouchers would give the government/unions some authority on curriculum and teaching methods……IOW making the private schools a clone of the public schools.

  28. I was a senior army officer preparing for retirement from the Forces by working on an education degree from the University of Saskatchewan. I Took ostly evening classes, and I managed to fit day classes into my schedule, took a leave of abscence for my internship, etc.
There were only two profs who put a strong socialist agenda into their teaching. One tolerated no opposition, and of course I had lots of run-ins with him, resulting in a poor mark. The other was open to debates and opposing viewpoints, we had great discussions in class and after hours, and I had excellent marks from him. A 3rd prof had a ‘First nations’ agenda, and of course you can’t argue when she blamed white man for everything.
I got my degree in 2004. I’d say 80% of the required courses that students took were totally unneccessary, and did nothing to make a person a better teacher. Anything taught at the U of S that was of any use to become a better teacher I had taken on a 3 day military course called “Methods of Instruction”, years earlier.
I did sub for a year, but was never able to get a full-time teaching job – I’m convinced it was politics and nepotism. It was especially annoying when the school boards in S’toon were screaming for male teachers to be role models (hmmm…senior Army Officer…I think I was!). I work for the provincial gov’t now.

  29. Ah well. Parents are putting up with it all.
You know…what’s the use; ‘somebody’ ought to do something; it’s no big deal…etc.

  30. It’s good that children were made to freeze. Get them used to McGuinty’s filed energy policies.
And then get them used to the taste of “long pig”.
Let me know when Ontario has re-entered the twenty-first century and when teachers’ unions have been abolished.

  31. Big Hairy Guy @8.48 pm:
Nothing is ever as easy as it sounds. Vouchers need to go hand in hand with the removal of teachers unionsand their power/desire to drag everthing and everybody down to the lowest common denominator. With the imposition of minimum educational standards instead of state mandated curriculum, with tougher standards for entrance into post secondary education (public or private), with school boards run by parents, not activists, with freedom for religous instruction.
And consequenses for those who fail. Both students as well as teachers and school administrators.
…What colour is the sky out there???…
