Since 1895 London has been home to an annual series of summer concerts, spread out over the course of eight weeks from July to September, called the Proms. Originally staged in public spaces (promenades) with the intention of educating English commoners about the pleasures of classical music, the Proms have since become a more widespread cultural tradition. In tonight’s selection, from the 2009 edition of the most popular concert in the series, the traditionally looser, almost giddy annual finale known as The Last Night of the Proms, throngs of jolly pink revelers join the rather impressively attired Sarah Connolly in a rousing performance of Rule Britannia.

    Elder of Ziyon on the BBC’s disturbingly sympathetically-toned article about a Palestinian murderer named Ibrahim Shammasina:

    “The BBC allows Shammasina to talk about how horrible prison is, how wonderful freedom is, and how important resistance is. It describes how heartbroken his mother is, how he is trying to rebuild his family, and how tragic it is that his brother, father and wife all died while he was imprisoned. The entire is designed to make the reader sympathize with him and with the tribulations he has had to endure.
    “But it doesn’t say a word about his victims.
    “Who did Shammasina kill?
    “Lior Tubul and Ronen Karmani, were both seventeen years old (some reports say Ronen was 18.) On a summer day in 1990, they went to visit their girlfriends north of Jerusalem.
    “Shammasina abducted them, bound their hands behind their backs, gagged them and then stabbed them dozens of times, so that their faces were unrecognizable. They were dumped in a ravine nearby.”

    Yes, how very kind of the BBC to give Shammasina a more human voice, and how sad the jail time must have been, not just for Shammasina, who was doing his “‘duty (as a) Palestinian to resist the occupation'”, but also for his “frail grandmother” who “could not see her son for years,” and has now “understandably” decided to join him in Qatar.

  10. I read this article and it made me realize that no matter what the CPC do, it is always wrong in the Red Star and the Grope and Flail.

    If the Minister had to approve this, it would not have happened and the media would call them “control freaks”. Since the Minister didn’t know, it is apparent that they have no control and they should resign! Wow. From the article:
    NDP MP Olivia Chow said Kenney should take responsibility for the “media stunt,” just as he does when the government makes positive announcements.
    Yup, she said that. Like I said, if the Minister had cancelled it, if he knew, he would be a control freak, controlling the message, controlling the awesome bureaucrats, you know the story.

    And how as late as Tuesday, Sierra Club tried to mislead it’s own members about the money.
    According to the Time report, between 2007 and 2010 the Sierra Club accepted over $25 million in donations from the gas industry, mostly from Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy – one of the biggest gas drilling companies in the U.S. and a firm heavily involved in fracking.

  21. Oh dear. Rather than addressing the interesting CONTENT of Dwayne’s (unattributed) post, North of 60 is now writing sour, style reviews of SDA postings. (Feb. 5 @ 1:25 a.m.)
    Two can play. Re a critical mass of North of 60’s fairly recent comments here:
    1) shrew; 2) scold:
    1) “a bad tempered or scolding woman”; 2) “a nagging or grumbling person, esp. a woman”.
    Get a grip.

  24. and 12 minutes later, mecca, medina, tehran, damascus and several other places would be just memories floating on the winds…iran really needs to be forcefully reminded that talking crap like that is dangerous…especially when people take you seriously…that’s half the problem with the Islamists…they bluster, boast, brag and threaten and then act surprised when their bluff is called.

    Iranian Parliament’s Website: Attack Israel this Year

    The Iranian parliament’s official website has published an article calling on the government to attack Israel before the end of the year.
    According to Israeli TV Channel 2’s veteran Middle East expert, Ehud Yaari, the article cites three reasons for the call.
    First – a religious fatwa allowing such a strike. Second – threats from Israel regarding a planned strike on Iran. And third – Iran’s alleged military capability to carry out such an attack.
    The article specifies that the area between Lod and Jerusalem should be targeted, as well as Tel Nof Air Force Base.
    The article seems to be part of a recent trend in Iran to step up the rhetoric regarding a possible attack on Israel. Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said Friday that Israel is a “cancerous tumor that should be cut and will be cut.”
    “We have intervened in anti-Israel matters, and it brought victory in the 33-day war by Hizbullah against Israel in 2006, and in the 22-day war” between Hamas and Israel in Gaza, Khamenei was quoted as saying.
    He added, “From now on, in any place, if any nation or any group confronts the Zionist regime, we will endorse and we will help. We have no fear expressing this.”
    On Saturday, press outlets in Iran also widely quoted a blog post by Alireza Forghani, a computer engineer, who called upon Tehran to “wipe out Israel” by 2014.
    Forghani called on his leaders to target Israeli sites using land-to-land missiles. Ballistic Sijil missiles should be launched at Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, he suggested, as well as power stations and other vital infrastructure. Then, Shahab 3 and Ghader missiles should target the rest of Israel’s population centers. Nine minutes would suffice for “total annihilation,” he predicted.

    DERA GHAZI KHAN:
    Kot Chuttha police have arrested a man who has admitted to killing his wife, Samina, her sister (his brother’s wife) and their mother in collusion with his brother in a Dera Ghazi Khan village.
    Talking to The Express Tribune at the police station, Ismaeel said he did not believe he had committed a crime. “My wife and her sister (his brother’s wife) had loose morals. They deserved death. I can’t let my wife talk to other men,” he said. He said he had caught Samina (his wife) talking to a man over cell phone.
    The suspect said he and his brother, Imran, had shot and killed Samina and Zarmina, their wives, and their mother, Kulsoom, on Friday night. “Their mother was to blame for it. She had failed to raise her daughters in accordance with our traditions. I had warned her (mother-in-law) several times to control her daughters,” he said.
    According to the FIR registered on a complaint filed by the father of the deceased sisters, Mukhtar, the suspects had came to his house on Friday night to ask their wives to return home with them.
    Mukhtar said Samina and Zarmina had left their husbands’ home a week ago and had been living at their parents’ house in Basti Damraywala. He said his daughters had married the suspects about six months ago. He said whenever the deceased visited him they complained about their husbands’ behaviour. “They would always complain about their husbands beating them and quarreling with them,” he said.
