OK now,
what measure is to be used?
A post few days ago about the size of manhood,
or,
the ability to fold.
Mind you, the orignal govenment’s law was stupid in the first place.
Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi does his job, which is to tell the EU and the IMF what they would like to hear in order to keep any semblance of negotiations going on. Orbán’s strategy seems to be that of creating fear that the Hungarian economy will bring down all the rest of Europe with it(it’s already happening to a certain extent).
Hungary has been milking the EU subsidies for years, but the latest turn towards autocracy is too much for the EU to tolerate. It’s not at all a “principled stand for sovereignty” as some people seem to (miss)read.
Peter’s right. I have no sympathy with Hungary. They ran up huge government deficits over the past 10 years after they elected the Communists back into power in 2002 or so. Now they can’t pay.
Tough. They’re just trying some cheap dodges to evade the debt burden they’ve incurred. I would agree with them if they wanted to charge the outgoing government with malfeasance in office.

You are absolutely wrong. Orban was elected after the years of post-communists rule. They governed according to EU directives and destroyed Hungarian economy.
During election year Orban promised economic changes. Because of tragic state of Hungarian economy some of his new laws were quite drastic but nevertheless they have support of majority of Hungarians.
Apart from changes in economy he also delegalized communist party and tried to promote patriotism (ex. parliament changed name from “Republic of Hungary” to “Hungary” and made reference to the role of Christianity in preserving the nation,)
I think that the attacks on Orban are connected not only with economy but also with some pro-patriotic, anti-communist changes made by Orban.
NO wonder that in some EU media Orban is called “fascist.” (and Putin is called democrat )
We are witnessing the fine art of keeping the waste material circling the bowl until Hope and Change wins re-election. After the vote, I would not be surprised by a sudden and cataclysmic collapse of the global financial system. I imagine it’s similar to keeping a patient alive to harvest organs. Meanwhile the narrative of the MSM is highly creative and entertaining.

Not all events in the Western world center on Obama and USA.
Some centers on EU and the pro-communist rulers in Brussels.
Perhaps so, Ella, but the US, European and London financial hubs are joined at the hip. It’s one big canoe, and at this time, as each faltering EU country comes close to failing to roll over it’s debt, each in turn becomes capable if crashing Europe. Defaults are dedicate triggering events. When the European system seizes up, it will take the US. I think it more absurd to believe Brussels acts independently than that US banking co-ordinates. Banking is global, it’s risks are global, and the whole mess is miserably complex and fragile.
At the center of all if this is the status of FRNs as the reserve currency (petroleum purchase settlement currency) of the world. It is my belief that Brussels does not act independently.
Make that ‘derivative’. Oh how I loathe spellcheck on the iPhone.
“We fully respect the authority of the European Commission, the guardian of the EU treaties,” Martonyi wrote in a letter dated January 6 and published by his ministry on Tuesday. “We stand ready to consider changing legislation, if necessary.”
Now,THAT is grovelling!
I’d like to have Nigel Farrage rewrite that statement,” we have absolutely NO respect for the European Commission, nor do we recognize their authority.”
Better.

Those who are in debt are not free.
Post-communist rule: that includes Fidesz 1st mandate, 1998-2002. EU directives in Hungary’s economy? Well, duh! Hungary signed the accession treaty, its aim during all these years (including Fidesz’ 1st)was to be able to adopt the Euro. In order to do that they had to trim the deficit. Now the Hungarian paradox: the 1st Socialist-Liberal period (1994-1998) trimmed the deficit, adopting an austerity program (the Bokross package, or “Bokross Csomág). Hungarians didn’t take too well having to pay for free services, and they elected Fidesz in 1998.
Now, notice that Slovakia didn’t do bad at all under those nasty EU directives, and adopted the Euro, and now they come to shop here.
Orban didn’t promise anything, there was no election campaign, just empty slogans. Certainly never talked about changing the Constitution.
Support for Orbán stands now at 18%. Unfortunately, the ones who will benefit from this slumps are the real nazis: the Jobbik party.
Professor László Keri remembers what he called out to Orbán at the end of an argument in 1983: “You and your friends, you’re just as aggressive as the sons of Lenin in the (Hungarian) Soviet Republic, like (the Hungarian Communist politician and Bolshevik revolutionary) Béla Kun. God forbid you ever become prime minister.
