There is something perverse about building a “human rights” monument in the same country where one human rights commission prosecuted a publisher for reprinting the “Muhammad cartoons” and another banned a preacher for life from quoting “homophobic” Bible verses, even in private correspondence—to cite two of the most egregious cases.
Furthermore, there’s the obvious deduction that Asper really wanted another Holocaust museum to rival Yad Vashem and its Washington, DC counterpart. But Canada being “diverse” and “multicultural,” that simply wouldn’t do, so the project devolved into a more “inclusive” atrocity exhibition.
I finally got it about what this thing is. Its a cathedral for liberals, secular humanists and atheists.
I can offer simple advice to those concerned about past atrocities. Get over it a$$holes.
Many years ago I read a couple books detailing the brutal and senseless peacetime slaughter of my relatives by the racist Soviets for the crime of being German and living in Russia. It made me mad. What did I do? I quit reading those damn books and got over it really quickly.

Losing public funding for their museum was a blow to the holocaust industry. It’s their biggest money maker after fractional reserve banking.
If it was Izzy Asper’s idea then he (or his family) should pay for it. I assume they can afford it, being billionaires and all.
I am against any taxpayers’ money to support it. I think the whole thing is a dumb idea.
Scar and GYM, I agree to a point, but believe it was Soviet ideology that did that more so than a racial thing and we have to stay vigilant and make darn sure the same ideology does not reap the same results here, which I believe it is trying hard to recreate here.
Those of my and my wife’s relatives that were killed by bullets or in labour camp died because they would not bend to the new atheistic Marxist theology. The few that became communists did so because they were cowards and wanted to survive rather than stay true to their Christian faith and belief in freedom.
The cold war between radical left and liberal democracy did not end with Yeltsin climbing onto that tank by the Moscow White House and is continuing on a different level.

Raids and detentions during the Christmas season are not uncommon in Iran, a Shi’a-majority country that is seen as one of the worst persecutors of religious minorities.

The Nestorians twice had a foothold in China only to come up on the losing end of dynastic changes. The ancient Christians of India were under the aegis of the Persian Church.

some of my Eastern Eurpoean ancestors were persecuted and harrassed by the Russians to the point that they had to flee, leaving what few possessions the socialist state hadn’t confiscated behind…do they get a spot in the museum ?
White males are persecuted today in Canada for free speech, as with Ezra Levant and Rev Boisson among but a few.
How many others have lost their livelihoods in the shadowy star chambers of the Canadian Human Rights Commission for having expressed an opinion is anyone’s guess. Do they get a place in the Human Rights museum?

I like the idea of all human rights being on display in one central location. Why? When I visit I can go to the gift shop and pick up my right to not like my neighbour and the freedom to tell him so. I can also pick up my right to carry a concealed weapon and the right to defend myself and my property with lethal force (thereby having a street named after me).

If we go back far enough I’m sure all our ancestors could be represented. Many people don’t know that Hitler was actually Austrian and not German but the shadow of his evil empire never touched Austria, and he is entirely associated with Germany which is still apologizing 66 years later. Just as Stalin was not Russian and is not associated with Georgia. Of course the winners always write the books and Stalin was every bit as evil as Hitler.

Don’t be an idiot, peter. Austria is a German national state. It was created out of those provinces of the Habsburg Empire that had entirely German populations. German is a nationality, and not a matter of citizenship in the Hohenzollern Empire or its successor republics. The Germans of Austria are every bit as German as those in Germany. For that matter, so are the Germans in Switzerland, and Switzerland would also be a German national state – if it were organized as a national state, which it isn’t.

Just to save your time on never getting back to me and since you have set aside this special time to humiliate yourself in public (i think this thread is dead anyway) Austria started WW1 . I just couldn’t let Switzerland go or I would have hit the delete button. The Swiss have not been conquered in approx. 800 years and their borders have remained unchanged since 1815. They have a democratic system based on the USA constitution and have 4 official languages icluding german , french italian and ?. Thw Swiss were neutral during WW2 and many POW’s found safety there once across the border. Even Hitler was not stupid enough to attack the Swiss as every male citizen is armed (still) and the terrain is not inviting to a invader. The most important reason though is that every country in the world hid their assets in Swiss banks including the Germans.
I do agree with you that the Austrians and many others had a very friendly relationship and that germanic roots ran deep historically. Austria welcomed the Germans with open arms but that does not change the fact that it was a seperate independent country, as it is again today.
