On Friday, the biggest boosters of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights threw in the towel.
Like a punch-drunk fighter, the CMHR is still swinging, refusing to give up. But the Winnipeg Free Press, the propaganda arm of the museum, admitted in an editorial that the cost overruns of the CMHR are beyond the ability of the private sector to pay. The charade is over.
The numbers are so grim that the FP refuses to publish them.
So we’ll do it for them.

Gee Dad. Its gonna cost more than a dollar and a half just to go and see ’em.
Who thought 1) this was a good idea 2) believed it would come within budget and 3)that the taxpayers would agree to spending their money on a museum in such desperate times?
It will sit empty at least 50% of the time, and while that’s not an educated guess I bet it’s close.
If they put all the HRT’s and encompassing legislation in there and locked the doors it would be worth it. Otherwise, not so much.
mike
If it does open up, could somebody in the ‘Peg drop by and pick mine up, they should be somewhere in Section 13.
Let the Indians pay for it with the profits from their casinos.
I suspect the equalization transfer payments to Manitoba are already being used to pay for the new football stadium that the Aspers backed out of.
While B.C., Alta and Sask work and save… Manitoba spends.
Manitoba . The longer they have an NDP government the poorer they become. The more people Leave. Just like California or Detroit. Even the rich flee the enclaves when they cannot be guaranteed safety.
One only has to see what become of BC from the motley socialists or Ontario now in the grip of an ugly Government bent on social engineering not its inhabitants. Where Marxist ideology rules& not the people penury is soon nipping at its heels.
Close down the HRC and use the budget to build it.
I seem to recall our friends to the south getting a little riled up over the concept of taxation without representation. This idiotic museum is one of the largest affronts to human rights that I can think of and represents the deranged dreams of a member of the former Lieberal kleptocracy.
In the spirit of conciliation that this time of year brings, I think there might be a solution. All of the HRC’s in Canada would utilize their budgets to finish their structure and then all of the staff would be moved to the Winnipeg location. Following relocation of all of the countries HRC staff to Winnipeg, then cement would be poured over the whole structure aside from a couple of air vents and slots large enough to pass food and toilet paper through. (I’m not totally heartless). Then the HRC’s could work undisturbed by reality outlining their thinking on “human rights” while being totally ignored by 99.99% of the Canadian population.
Yep I have seen this sorta thing before.
Community arenas allegedly financed by private subscription until the money ran out during construction. The the movers and shakers (the same elements who canvass for donations and then take credit as if THEY donated the funds) browbeat the municiple governments to “rescue the investment” and then the alleged self financing areana’s need municiple funds/employees to function.
If the CMHR runs outa money to finish….leave it as is as a monument to frivilous socialist waste of tax funds…rather than finish it with provincial or federal grants.
The funds already expended would have been better spent on flood control……hiring more Police for Winterpeg.
When I first read about Izzy Asper’s idea for a Museum of Human Rights… I thought “Oh, no, you mean their dead?”
Izzy Asper, a former provincial Liberal leader, had good connections with the federal Liberals in Ottawa. CRTC broadcast licences, from the federal government was, under the Liberals, a very political process. So it came with the territory of building a media empire. I’d wager dollars to donuts that Izzy Asper could call P.M. Jean Chretien pretty much any time he needed to.
It’s just another Liberal fantasy project the Harper Conservative government needs to put out of it’s misery.
The Asper empire is gone. The ghost of this boondoggle will wander around rattling it’s chains until it’s pronounced dead. The cause of death should be listed “Liberal Fantasy Boondoggle Syndrome” on the toe tag.
I would suggest that, given those financials, one would be reading the “Last Rites” on the Human Rights museum.
Cheers

Isn’t Murray the ex mayor of Winterpeg?
I never understood the purpose of this project, except as a boondoggle.
To me, a museum is a place one puts artifacts – historical items from a bygone era or culture; old technology and dead things.
There should, a) be no feed money for it and b) an audit of where the current money has already gone.
The Aspers wanted it, let them have.
Larry @2:51 hits the nail on the head.
Revnant… Manitoba’s population has been growing in the last decade.
And good riddance to bad company.
Related- my super-entitled ex schoolteacher Aunt is in town, with her super-entitled man-friend

Of course the Sask NDP lost their pensions when Nortel crashed……………..
Trolling Grandma for inheritance ….

Turn it into a casino (run by natives or just plain dippers) and it will eventually break even.
They could tuck a museum into one corner and charge $2.50 per person, children under the age of 13 free.
Sounds like a winner to me.
We had a millionaire donate a couple of hundred thousand dollars for a museum no one wanted but he needed one more building with his name on it. (Obviously a egomaniac, they were spread across other parts of Canada.)
The small town would never have to spend a cent on it. No one came so after a few years the town had to support it or have a derelict building at the waterfront. Recently they began using the second floor as a catch-all for the items intended for a town museum that the council had always declared we couldn’t afford.
To go up to the second floor, there is a small fee so, no surprise to anyone, it’s never visited.
You have to be on guard and learn to spot a millionaire egomaniac at ten paces, or pay the consequences.
It’s too bad that not getting ripped off wasn’t a human right.
Or living in a supposedly free country where the nation’s founding demographic wasn’t censored and persecuted by the minority in kangaroo courts.
Jema — no, Stu Murray is a former PC Party boss, while Glen Murray was the mayor.
djb — Manitoba’s population is growing, but we’re still losing pop from intra-provincial migration. That’s a sure sign that your province is not functioning as well as others.
We’ve got a billion-dollar deficit, a new Stafium under construction that has no hope of being paid for by the CFL, team, a museum nobody wants to visit or pay to finish, and a downtown being prowled by gangs of murderous thugs. One great city!
I suggest at this juncture that y’all google up “Skydome” and read the wiki article about that MASSIVE farce.
The short version is this: It cost over six hundred million bucks ($600,000,000) to put the (then) biggest domed stadium in Canada in the absolutely worst possible place that could be found, downtown Toronto right at the waterfront beside the crumbling Gardiner Expressway.
Rogers Communications bought it a few years ago out of (second or third) bankruptcy for $25 million. ($25,000,000) Please note, twenty five is a lot less than six hundred.
So, who paid for that? YOU DID. Even if you live in Alberta, you paid for Skydome.
Therefore I call at this time upon the CPC to make particularly sure that doesn’t happen in this case. Let these incompetent, graft ridden rent seekers sink beneath the waves without a trace, let the giant boondoggle which is the Canadian Human Rights Museum be finished with tar paper, and let it house a flea market and bingo for pennies on the dollar.
And for Ghod’s sake, could the government please get MY money back from these grasping @ssh0les? A loan is a -loan-, right? Do to them what you’d do to ME if I owed a hundred million on a government loan.
So, now this boondoggle, initiated while the Librano$ were in power to help out their Asper cheerleaders, is going to be blamed on that “bully” Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
PM Harper, with this crowd, is damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. What shysters.
And, now, we’ve got stale-old granny Jeffrey Simpson calling PM Harper a bully: “Even with a majority, the bullying goes on” (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/jeffrey-simpson/even-with-a-majority-the-bullying-goes-on/article2272726/ )
When the Liberal$ were bullying Canadians and robbing us of our hard-earned dollars every week of their hegemony, did their sycophants in the media ever make a hint of a suggestion that they were bullies?
I, and most Canadians at this point, are tired of the mendacious meme that PM Harper and his government are bullies. They’re tough negotiators and they don’t put up with a lot of nonsense as they try to undo years and years of Liberal skulduggery, which has cost the Canadian taxpayers far too much for the propping up of Librano special interests.
To the Liberal cheerleaders, the PM and his party’s toughness is construed as “bullying,” whereas to the ROC, it’s simply good government.
Could only wish that Harper & Co. would learn a lesson from all this:
just tell the truth – taxpayer dollar are for essential things – and say ‘no’ at the outset.
Perhaps they can place this frigging socialist implant on display – it could be their ‘one’ real rights abuse anomaly in Canada! LOL!
news media, well populated by Joos, hollywood, run by joos, wall street, bay street also jooish enclaves….so tell my WHY ASSpers can’t raise the coin?????
The monument to Asper feel good progressivism is on the ropes. I doybt there will be any financing going forward from the Asper empire – time to tap the public purse with another to big to fail bail out.
Politicians of all stripes should be forced to read the comments of this and a few other common sense blogs. Larry and Batb, Jamie, Phantom have said most everything that could be said of this white elephant. I remember when Izzy was running around promoting this liberal idea, the liberals all falling over themselves to get on board simply because it would be another” liberal legal skimmer”. You see liberals always love liberal skimming machines, like the slimes at the malls and small business that install skimmers, the liberals just do it on a grander scale. Gun control, Wheat board HRDC Grand Mere, Human rights museum on and on. Let the parasitic Asper family pay for this scam, they are right up there with Larry Rykman.
If the people of Canada want this museum, wouldn’t they be happy to donate to it to help get if built?
Seems people are voting with their wallets.
I have said from the start that if the Aspers want this, let them pay for it without a penny from us.
They put all the rights in a rights museum!
Then taxed us some more to bus in the schoolkids to see ’em.
Because that will be most of the visitors, assuming this white elephant ever gets completed and filled up with videos intended to depict “rights”. One day, perhaps before the white elephant gets turned into a mosque, we will realize that we should have enforced our “right” to keep the government’s boondoggling hands out of our pockets.
I wonder if the “occupy” mindsets out there see any irony in the new Chairman and champion of the “Human Rights” museum being an executive from the eeeevile fossil fuel industry?
This museum dedicated to mans inhumanity and hurt feelings was a stupid idea from the beginning. I’m sure every slight would be represented and every apology would be highlighted with little spotlights and recordings of mea culpa. I’m sure the CHRC would have seen it as guaranteed employment and the legitimacy they have never been able to attain and never should. Most peoeple have a life to live and don’t need this crap.
It will be a monument to the evilness of white Christian Canadians. I always wonder why there is a lineup of a million people to get in since we treat minorities so badly. I wonder how long the lineup is to get out?
@ scar
With any luck we will never find out. Even if it ever did open it would have to be subsidized forever by the taxpayers who voted Harper in to end this type stupid spending. He has already said enough is enough. Of course the NDP is crying foul on abandoning this historic treasure. I doubt if Winnipegers give a rats ass.

“Most people have a life to live and don’t need this crap.”
Yes, but of course this is really for the children not thinking adults. They like to bus them to indoctrination centers instead of march them these days, but the results are always the same.
@ Knight 99
Isn’t that the truth ! Even Gore/Suzuki know the future is with the ones easiest to brainwash.
The government should take it over and turn it into a Museum of Communist Atrocities, that would be fair play, and worth taking our school kids on tours to learn what their teachers seem incapable of teaching them.
The outcry in the House would be worth the price of admission, particularly if there was a section to detail Turdeau’s days as a KGB informant and then friend of Fidel Castro. Also, make the CBC run a three-part documentary on what the Museum has to offer.
I suppose y’all think I’m kidding.

I like your idea Peter O’Donnell @ 11:24. Forewarned is forearmed.
I like the idea of all human rights being on display in one central location. Why? When I visit I can go to the gift shop and pick up my right to not like my neighbour and the freedom to tell him so. I can also pick up my right to carry a concealed weapon and the right to defend myself and my property with lethal force (thereby having a street named after me).
Actually, Mr. O’Donnell, I don’t think you’re kidding, but I do think you are perhaps misinformed. I thought it had been documented that the KGB had considered approaching Trudeau to recruit him as an agent, but decided against it, on the grounds that he lacked the necessary intellect and character to work for them directly, and could be at least as useful if just allowed to do his own thing on his own initiative with maybe a little friendly, above-ground guidance.
When Trudeau was famously photographed shaking hands with the senior KGB agent in America, he had no idea who the fellow was. The KGB wanted something they could use on him if they thought he needed his arm twisted; and, apparently, they wanted to have a little fun at his expense. Not the sort of thing they’d do to him if he was one of theirs. He was a classic useful idiot, nothing more.
