In Egypt, a guy gets three years hard labour for insulting Islam.
Next door In Libya, the “transitional leader” (transitional? hardy har har) declares that:

Abdul-Jalil laid out a vision for a new Libya with an Islamist tint, saying Islamic Sharia law would be the “basic source” of legislation and existing laws that contradict the teachings of Islam would be nullified.
He outlined several changes to align with Islamic law, including putting caps on interest for bank loans and lifting restrictions on the number of wives Libyan men can take. The Muslim holy book, the Quran, allows men up to four wives.

Next door in Tunisia, the Islamist party Ennahda is expected to win the most votes, though it is not clear if it will gain a majority.
If we had a ‘…’ Spring and deposed of the secularist dictatorship here in Canada could we marry four women and throw the anti-Christians in jail too?

  17. Philanthropist – an even better recipe for violence would be the conversion of large numbers of Chinese to islam; then you’ve probably got 20 horny single young men after the rich guy with the 4 wives. Might be one of the reasons why TROP is not very welcome in that country.
    There’s just one problem with the islam secret weapon – breeding endlessly. Right now none of these places can feed themselves and attempting to run a country based on the rantings of a 7th century epileptic pedophile are a sure way to ensure mass starvation. So, maybe the problem will solve itself and all we need to do is just prevent any people from escaping.

  18. Libya will likely come unglued . . 40+ years of suppressed Tribalism under Ghaddafi means there are many. many scores to be settled and now all the loonies are armed to the teeth.
    Good news for the West if we can foment self inflicted violence and mayhem in the Arab world. If they are too busy whacking each each other, sunni vs shia, tribe A vs tribe B, then the rest of the world can live in Peace.

    The article states that insulting Islam is a crime under Egyptian law. Actually, insulting Islam is a crime under Sharia Law, which does not recognize national borders. e.i the fatwa Iranian mullah Kohmeini issued against Salman Rushdie living in England.
    Islamist nation’s governments belong to Interpol. Thus they’d be allowed to hunt down the identities and locations of those who insult Islam over the internet, with the assistance of Western governments, e.i. here on SDA, no matter where ever they live.
    (Though they might have to use deception or taqqiya.)

  36. The only major problem seems to be Egypt. Libya’s transitional ruler really is transitional. He doesn’t have all that much power. Given the tribal rivalries, a ‘sticky’ ruler is not going to be the problem. And Tunisia’s Ennadha is pretty benign for an Islamist party.

    Recall some months ago how Gadaffi’s military juggernaut suddenly began suffering reversals against seemingly outmatched rebel forces? I wonder if it related to the efforts of a Libyan-American electrical engineer based in Abu Dhabi who masterminded a hijacking of Libyan cellphone service and restored communications to rebel forces previously in disarray. It is interesting to note who assisted him and who did not.

    If the ‘Harper Government’ takes the official position of supporting Israel no matter what, then isn’t it kind of ironic that they have helped to destabilize the region and make Israel less safe? HA!
