We Don’t Need No Stinking Giant Fans

Forbes;

The average U.K. household bill is a tad under $200 per month, and so the thermostat goes down. It’s pretty chilly there for much of the year, and a cold house has consequences. A study just came out today on the health costs of what they call “fuel poverty”, commissioned by the Energy and Climate Change Secretary (don’t we need one of those?), Chris Huhne. Bottom line: the chill from green taxes is now killing more Brits per year than car crashes.
London has suddenly awoken to the costs of indiscriminate greenness and is proposing to reduce the solar subsidies and — this is big — now threatens the multibillion dollar subsidies for its massive (and massively ugly) wind power scam.

If only some sort of technology existed that could carry information from across the Atlantic to our own provincial energy minister.

  1. Kate, please stop posting these stories. I’m getting too excited.
Luckily, I live in Ontario. Our premier only hears the voices of the newest lobby group, and what with his current 25% hydro rebate, most of us will survive through this winter, but I admit, I’m actually hoping many of us do not.

  2. Dave, maybe that overloaded line into downtown Toronto will burn out again and leave them in the dark for a couple of days. In January. In a snow storm.
416 area code voted for this regime, they should enjoy the fruits of their labors in full measure.
Me, I’ve got a generator and a wood stove. It’ll suck, but I’ll live.

  3. Maybe, just maybe, things will change here in Ontario once electricity rates triple and everyone starts dying from the Terminal McGuinty Drip.

  4. Ken – too easy of living? There’s a reason that those who grew up in the 30s were spendthrifts.

  5. Deutschmark uber alles.
Don’t the Germans understand that in supporting all the lazy useless socialist clowns of Europe they will become equally poor. Maggie Thatcher saw the writing on the wall and bailed with the Pound and was canned for it. So Europe has had 1 smart leader in the last 40 years.
The Euro is finished. The PIGS are trying to bring it down while the Germans and French are propping it up. Elections are coming that could change the whole dynamic.

  6. Scar, speaking for myself, don’t feel bad, as actually it is all part of the same socialist utopian fraud.

  7. but gore and his cronies made their money up front and have already balied out so it’s irrelevant now

  8. The British should move to the Middle East. There are fewer muslims there, and it’s warmer.
Who would want to live in the British Isles anyway?

  9. Related: Steyn wrote a long time ago about a UK pensioner couple who froze to death in their municipal housing council flat but had AIDS pamphlets from the city on their counter.

  10. Peterj, thank you for that post about the underwater power cables to Britain. I have never heard of that before — definitely a news story that needs more exposure. Newfoundland has kicked around the idea of undersea cables from Labrador to Newfoundland to Nova Scotia that would transmit power from an expansion of the Churchill Falls hydro project without going through Quebec. I always suspected it was impractical, but according to the article you link,
The 160-mile BritNed cable between the Isle of Grain in north Kent and the Netherlands was laid earlier this year at a cost of £500 million. Eleven cables totalling about 1,000 miles long would cost about £5.5 billion.
    Hmmmm.

  11. So, AGW policies lead to higher energy costs and lower thermostat settings, that in turn lead to higher winter mortality rates. The models are right, climate change is deadly.

  12. According to the Financial Times, 4 million UK households spend 10% or more of their monthly income on heating. Parliament considers it serious enough to pay guel subsidies, but not seriously enough to ditch the super costly green schemes. Germany is heading in the same direction due to their insistence on ” green ” power.

  13. Ken; the reason we have come to having such imbecile adolescents running our economies into the ground is, no balls. These current leaders are nut less wonders, mommys boys who have never taken a stand on anything, inept, weak for the most part, and just trying their hardest for that last vote. If just one Canadian politician, provincial or federal, just stood up, called this SCAM a SCAM like Daniel Hannan or Vaclav Klaus, or Nigel Farage, imagine, people, when a man named Nigel has more balls than a man named Steve or Ed or Rob, This SCAM brought on the world by Maurice Strong, Algore Suzuki the Indian pervert Puchari and all the other minions, has broke the western economies, that was the plan from the start, When you sell your soul for a vote there politicians, you might not get the vote, but you’ve sold out, Karma is a bitch

  14. actually increased deaths are the feature of green living…not a bug..

  15. My son, who has a time of use meter, shuts the breaker off before 7 a.m. on his electric water heater and doesn’t turn it back on til after 7 in the evening, in an attempt to lower his bill.
A good friend, who works very very hard, but doesn’t make a high income, sits night after night in the dark for fear of what turning lights on will do to the power bill.
Just 2 examples of Dalton MacGuinty’s culture of conservation that the Ontario liberals are cultivating.

  16. bartinsky, well said. Glad I asked.
@ The Glengarrian, this is sad.
The “occupiers” are right in a sense, as what we need is for the people to get angry and turf out the political scumbags causing situations such as this in the UK, Ontario and BC, as well as elsewhere. But to this point, most people still believe the lies being peddled.

So, pumping thousands of megawatts through -sea water- sounds safe to you? Britain off-shoring its energy generation capacity because they are building windmills that don’t work sounds logical to you?
Of course it does. You’re a Lefty.
That’s an insult by the way. In case you were wondering.

  18. I have oil heating in Lower Northern Ontario.
One fill up which came at a quarter or a 200 gallon tank was 70 dollars HST. The second fill up was 80 dollars HST.
Cheerfully remember hard scrabble days in the UK
WW2. The lousy fireplace and the damp cold. Just keep insulating and using my Amish heater here and there.
Maybe Dalton has a plan- chuckle.

  19. Glendarrian, McGuinty is way ahead of your son. Effective November 30th the off-peak rate will rise by 5.1%, the mid-peak by 3.4% and the peak rate by 0.9%. All the people like your son and us seniors who switched to the off-peak hours to save money as McGuinty forced us to,gotcha suckers.

  20. The occupier movementers are communist shills who are trying to recreate the Bolshevik revolution.
Power and home heating is a sign of wealth and opulence. Leftists have been attacking people for decades for using the two.
If those idiots ever amount to doing anything, you can expect more people to freeze in the dark. Especially when they come to redistribute all your wealth.

  21. Somewhat apropos of this topic, the red blinking aircraft-recognition lights on the wind farm north of my place in Alberta have been turned off for some time. One wonders if the power bill for running them was getting to be too much.
