“The risk is “Japanisation” without the benefits of Japan: without a single government, or a trade super-surplus, or 1pc debt costs, or unique social cohesion.

“The meeting in Durban could become an act of mourning,” warns Reimund Schwarze of the Climate Service Center in Hamburg,”.

…-
“The Death of the Kyoto Process”
“There seems little possibility that next month’s climate summit in Durban will produce an emissions reduction agreement — meaning the world will soon lack any binding CO2 targets. Europe may soon find itself alone in the fight against global warming.”
“A climate catastrophe descended on the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin early last week. Politicians and diplomats from around the world were attending a conference to discuss how global warming will affect the world. They examined scenarios depicting how millions of people living in coastal areas could escape flooding, what will happen to the fishing and mineral rights of island nations when they no longer exist and how China and Russia will benefit from an ice-free Arctic.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said that it intended to “openly and creatively address” the dangers of climate change. The exercise was designed to help “find new paths of international cooperation.”
But the belief that global warming can be halted through international cooperation is elusive. The Kyoto Protocol, the world’s only binding climate agreement, will soon expire. The most important means to date of compelling industrialized nations to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions seems likely to become a mere footnote in history.
The current CO2-reduction agreements expire at the end of 2012, and there is enormous resistance to new targets. The environment ministers and negotiators from roughly 200 countries, who will travel to Durban, South Africa at the end of November for the latest global climate conference, are a long way from breathing new life into the Kyoto process.
Christiana Figueres, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, is making the bold claim that there is “a strong desire from all sides to see a final political decision made” in Durban. But this decision will probably consist of doing without fixed agreements on CO2 reduction in the future. “The meeting in Durban could become an act of mourning,” warns Reimund Schwarze of the Climate Service Center in Hamburg, which analyzes climate policy on behalf of the German government.

I enjoyed this story abut the psychology behind hitchhiking and discussions with strangers about US politics and climate change.
“I’ve hitchhiked thousands and thousands of miles, including coast to coast and Canada to Mexico, and I’ve never once felt physically threatened or even been scared when I was hitchhiking…It reminded me, though, of the ways that we keep ourselves from adventures. Sure, something could happen on my next ride, past performance is no guarantee of future success. But I refuse to let the fear of that kind of outcome rule my life, it’s a long-standing matter of principle with me…
Today we drove back. I’m not sure what my conclusions are from my trip. I went in part to see what’s going on out there. I found that there are a lot of frightened people in America these days. It’s much harder to hitchhike than it has ever been, people are more afraid of strangers, my theory is they watch too many cop shows.
But they’re also afraid on a deeper level, afraid for their jobs, afraid that Congress has sold out to the lobbyists, afraid that money talks and they don’t have much, afraid that their town or county will go bankrupt paying obscene pensions, afraid that their leaders have failed them and that the American dream is dying and they don’t know why. They don’t care much about what the climate will do by 2050. They are concerned with getting through the month.” http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/10/17/would-you-give-this-man-a-ride/#more-49388

Today we are trying to spread knowledge everywhere. Who knows if in centuries to come there will not be universities for re-establishing our former ignorance?
—Georg Christoph Lichtenberg (1742-1799)
In 1927, the French essayist Julien Benda published his famous attack on the intellectual corruption of the age, La Trahison des clercs. I said “famous,” but perhaps “once famous” would have been more accurate. For today, in the United States anyway, only the title of the book, not its argument, enjoys much currency. “La trahison des clercs”: it is one of those memorable phrases that bristles with hints and associations without stating anything definite. Benda tells us that he uses the term “clerc” in “the medieval sense,” i.e., to mean “scribe,” someone we would now call a member of the intelligentsia. Academics and journalists, pundits, moralists, and pontificators of all varieties are in this sense clercs. The English translation, The Treason of the Intellectuals,[1] sums it up neatly.
The “treason” in question was the betrayal by the “clerks” of their vocation as intellectuals.” http://www.newcriterion.com/articles.cfm/The-treason-of-the-intellectuals—-The-Undoing-of-Thought–4648

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — A review is underway at a Niagara Falls hospital after an elderly patient fell at the facility and was told to call an ambulance for help.
Doreen Wallace, 82, fell inside the double doors of the Greater Niagara General Hospital last weekend, breaking her leg and cutting her arm.
A security guard asked the ER for help, but was told Wallace would have to phone for an ambulance.
Wallace’s son did call 911, but by the time the ambulance arrived a half hour later, his mother had been cared for by a surgeon who was walking by.
The supervisor of the Niagara Health System says he’s disappointed Wallace didn’t get the care she deserved and adds that the NHS has apologized to the family.

“Chinese don’t like what toddler’s treatment says about their society”
The horrifying accident in which a Chinese toddler was squashed under the wheels of two trucks, then ignored by 18 passersby, has China wondering what’s become of it.
The accident was caught on a security video outside a store in Fushan and went viral after it was posted on the Internet.
It makes dreadful viewing. A steady stream of cyclists and pedestrians passes Wang Yue, aged two, as she lies rolling in her own blood in the street. They include a young girl who looks concerned but is dragged away by her mother.
Then, in a development that seems straight out of a morality tale, the only person who stops is an elderly woman. Chen Xianmei works as a garbage scavenger to make ends meet and is someone who might be seen as the dregs of society.
“Blood was coming out her nose and mouth,” said the 58-year-old, explaining her actions. “I didn’t understand why no one else had carried her from the street.”
As Shanghailist, one of the first English language sites to report on the video, notes,
Seven minutes, 18 passersby, and not one person decided to lift a finger. The only Good Samaritan, as it turned out, was a trash collector. Somewhere in here is a parable of life.
Chinese themselves have been rightly appalled by the tragedy and wonder what it says about their society. “This society is seriously ill. Even cats and dogs shouldn’t be treated so heartlessly” was the conclusion of one netizen on Sina Weibo.” http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/10/18/chinese-dont-like-what-toddlers-treatment-says-about-their-society/

“Dark clouds threaten solar makers’ future”
“(Reuters) – What a difference a year makes.
In late 2010, solar panel makers were sold out, Germany was gobbling up record numbers of the clean energy systems, and new markets were steadily growing.
Now, the erosion of subsidies in Germany and Italy, the world’s two biggest markets, and rising production of the panels that turn sunlight into electricity has left the industry awash in a glut of equipment and driven panel prices down by some 35 percent this year.
That is good news for consumers and distributors who buy the solar modules, but has left manufacturers reeling as their profit margins shrink and their share prices plummet to multi-year lows.
Some companies have gone bankrupt, including Solyndra, whose demise after receiving $535 million in government loans triggered a scandal in Washington that has many politicians questioning whether the federal government should continue supporting the industry.
That black eye for the industry and the bleak market conditions for panel makers will be key topics at the Solar Power International convention, the solar business’ biggest gathering in the United States, which is set to begin on Monday in Dallas.” http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/10/16/us-solar-spi-idUSTRE79F1Q620111016

They are concerned with getting through the month.”

The “treason” in question was the betrayal by the “clerks” of their vocation as intellectuals.”

Even cats and dogs shouldn’t be treated so heartlessly” was the conclusion of one netizen on Sina Weibo.”

That black eye for the industry and the bleak market conditions for panel makers will be key topics at the Solar Power International convention, the solar business’ biggest gathering in the United States, which is set to begin on Monday in Dallas.”

The limked article at newcriterion.com was written in December 1992. It discusses a 1927 work by Julien Benda named “The Treason of the Intellectuals” and a 1988 work by Alain Finkielkraut named “The Undoing of Thought”.
I haven’t read either, but I do know that Ayn Rand’s “For the New Intellectual” covered similar territory. She argued that the assault on reason and the decline into irrationality began with Immanuel Kant in the late 1700’s.
