Reader Tips

After a long absence during which all his videos were pulled due to copyright claims, the recordings of Hank Williams are once again widely available on YouTube and other sites. I don’t know how long this state of affairs will last, so I’m going to get while the getting is good: from 1949, (not 1947 as stated under the video) here’s his timeless classic I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.
The comments are open, as always, for your Reader Tips.

  1. This “news” story came up on my Google home page under Business.
    http://www.thestar.com/opinion/letters/article/1049451–we-re-not-benefiting-enough-from-our-oil
It’s a letter to the editor by Gareth Skipp in Mississauga.
Gareth states “Environment Minister Peter Kent informed me that the oil industry generates about $2 billion to our economy in direct and indirect benefits.“….
Clearly, Gareth is retarded. I don`t think that it`s right for the Toronto Star to exploit retarded adults for amusement. I would like to start a petition to put an end to this pratice.

  2. This evening’s musical selection brings back memories of listening to the battery operated radio in 1949. We had fun filled evenings listening to Boston Blackie, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, I Was A Soviet Spy For the FBI (correct name ?), King of the Royal Mounted, Firestone Music Hall and of course real country and western music. Mom would listen to Ma Perkins in the afternoon.
The truth finally is revealed about the release of the Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Al Megrahi. PM Brown lied to the nation. But then the left lying is nothing new. Just think Premiers Campbell and McGuinty.

  3. More proof, if any was needed. That there will be an Islamic attack on Israel. Egypt, Libya, Turkey, Iran, Syria. Will be the major aggressors.
    With Russian support.
    Ankara’s chosen scapegoat
Forty Israeli passengers, mainly businessmen who had landed in Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight from Tel Aviv, were separated from the rest of the flight passengers. Their passports were confiscated.
They were placed in interrogation rooms and stripped down to their underwear. Their carry-on bags were checked. And then they were lined up against a wall, forbidden to sit down or use the washroom.

  4. Ah, Hank Williams, who according to Leonard Cohen–himself a none too shabby songwriter–occupied the very top floor in the Tower of Song. Yessir!
Heh, Ken (Kulak), no wonder yer so much wiser than me: 1949’s my birth year!
Thanks EBD, what a great timeless song!

  5. Me No Dhimmi – So was I born in ’49, that doesn’t make Ken any smarter, it just makes him OLDER! Though it’s agreed he’s a pretty fart smeller.

  6. @Ken Kulak
Likewise. Of course, we had to be reasonable about how much we played the battery powered radio since the batteries (A, B, and C cells) were relatively expensive. When I was a young lad, my father bought me a crystal eadio kit which I used to listen to. No need for batteries, but it only picked the one local station nearby.
A bit later, saw an article in Popular Science about crystal radios and started building them for my friends. Then there was the day I found out about my first solid state device – an IN34 Germanium Diode.

  7. Hank Williams changed the face of country music in North America. My favorite is Cold Cold Heart. Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis did a great number on that one. Check it out on Youtube.

It should, as long as this process is legitimised by a strong democratic mandate. But strengthening the architecture of the eurozone will need time. It may need profound treaty changes, which will not happen overnight. But the direction is not disputed, and the determination of all member states to defend the common European currency is granted.”

  16. @ Richards in Vancouver, right. Thanks, as I could not remember the right name. The show fascinated me at the time.
@ Me No Dhimmi, thank you for the kind words, but larben has it right. I am older by seven years, but I may have more grandchildren than you guys.:-)
@ foobert, I do not remember details like that due to my age at the time, but I suspect that the listening time was husbanded because of that. City slickers had electricity, so would not know about the battery life issue. I also vaguely remember a radio show schedule in Western Producer newspaper.
Hank Williams had a very sad life and his music reflects that.
This may be old news for many of you, but Alberta’s liberal government is funding environment wackos films denigrating the oil sands. Suckers for Suzuki.

Yes, I’m talking about the great game of the UN global climate talks, which resume in a few weeks’ time in Panama – the last gathering before the big annual meeting, this year in Durban, South Africa, at the end of November.
But now a group of German academics at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research has used game theory – the mathematics behind strategic behaviour of countries – to propose a way though the myriad impasses for negotiators.
Jobst Heitzig, lead author of a study to be published shortly in the National Academy of Sciences, suggests that what is basically going wrong in the talks is that “free-riding” countries are undermining other countries that want to act on behalf of humanity.”

Janet Napolitano: Drudge is ‘just wrong’ on privacy
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is calling out web news aggregator Matt Drudge for suggesting that she’s an ogre eager to invade the privacy of Americans and in particular those who travel by air.
‘I think my nickname is “Big Sis.” I don’t think he means it kindly, actually,’ Napolitano said Tuesday, accurately recalling the moniker that often accompanies scary-looking photos of her on Drudge’s popular news site.
‘I think that what he means is we are watching too much—kind of an Orwellian view. He’s just wrong. I mean, he’s just wrong,’ Napolitano declared during a POLITICO Playbook breakfast at the Newseum. She said the privacy impact of new airport screening technology and similar programs are thoroughly vetted before they are implemented.”

  21. I just watched the first documentary in the “Passionate Eye” series on 9/11 over at the state broadcaster’s site.
It is well done, well worth watching.
While watching it,I did feel anger,as well as other emotions. Surprisingly my anger was not towards the islamic terrorists that did this atrocity, but at the ‘truthers’ that still 10 years later are squealing their inanities around the internet. Actually, much anger,if I run into one in the next few days,I’m sure there will be an unpleasant exchange.
Yesterday, the cbc put a story up about pieces of the towers being shipped to various places, mostly firehalls, where they would be used in memorials. The comments section for the story is infested (aided by the moderators) with the vermin that call themselves ‘truthers’.
The moderators blocked 75% of my posts, not because they breached the cbc guidelines(they didn’t),but IMHO,because they started with ” You are wrong and this is why’.
PMSH must do something about this corporation by next election,or I’m not voting, and won’t be donating.
