    Our economic news is disheartening and the task before us can seem daunting, but we must not lose our sense of optimism. People look around today and may see only the negative. They see a culture and a nation in decline, but that’s not who we are! America must regain its optimistic pioneering spirit again. Our founders declared that “we were born the heirs of freedom.” We are the heirs of those who froze with Washington at Valley Forge, who held the line at Gettysburg, who freed the slaves, carved a nation out of the wilderness, and allowed reward for work ethic. We are the sons and daughters of that Greatest Generation who stormed the beaches of Normandy, raised the flag at Iwo Jima, and made America the strongest and most prosperous nation in the history of mankind. By God, we will not squander what has been given us!

    “Our slow decline is a product of two inter-related problems. First, we’ve let our five basic pillars of growth erode since the end of the Cold War – education, infrastructure, immigration of high-IQ innovators and entrepreneurs, rules to incentivize risk-taking and start-ups and government funded research to spur science and technology.”
    Not so fast. There is only one pillar of growth, that is PROFIT.
    An economy is the sum total of all acts of production, trade and consumption performed by citizens. It is centred on the voluntary trade of goods and services for mutual benefit (i.e., profit). People can use their time and effort to produce what they like, but profit/growth stems from using less to produce more. All progress comes from the minds of those who produce more or better goods and services or who can do it using fewer resources. Price signals from trade of goods and services enable the producer to determine whether he is using resources wisely or wasting them.
    Savings are unconsumed production that are lent out to other producers. When a bank lends money, it expects most of the recipients to be successful, to watch the market price signals and turn a profit, of which the bank takes a portion in interest. But when government imposes taxes, it gives quite a large portion of that money to unproductive individuals. In that way, when a recipient is consuming but not producing, the economy declines. This cannot be supported on a wide scale, and it cannot go on forever.
    The one thing that makes government distinct from all other institutions is the ability to use coercion. Nobody likes to be subject to coercion; the proper function of government is to protect individual rights. Government does not have a magic wand to solve societal problems; if it did, they would surely have been solved long ago. Government officials do not obtain special insight that leads them to the correct solution for any issue. In fact, because they do not have to operate with the feedback of the free market, they are often insulated from the negative consequences of their decisions. This is a direct result of government initiating force on individuals, which breaks the fundamental rule of a civilized society that forbids it.
    What can be said about Friedman’s five alleged pillars?
    1. Education. It is hard to tell whether money for education is being used wisely. Supporting the future businessmen, computer analysts and virus researchers may be positive. Supporting the future sociologists who do nothing but find racists under every bed is a complete waste of tax dollars.
    2. Infrastructure. It is also hard to tell whether money for infrastructure is being used wisely. Fixing roads and bridges, or building subways or other transportation where many people need to get around will probably be positive. Building a road to nowhere, as certain African dictators were notorious for doing, is a complete waste of money. The closest parallel in Canada would be fixing rarely-used roads in the riding of a prominent politician, at the expense of those more widely travelled.
    3. Immigration of high-IQ innovators and entrepreneurs. There is nothing much wrong with this, and it doesn’t even cost much money. Some would say that these immigrants are taking something away from their home countries, but this is a collectivist argument that regards citizens as property of a state. Many such immigrants are escaping political upheaval, and might well return with their knowledge and skills when the situation improves.
    4. Rules to incentivize risk-taking and start-ups. The only incentive should be to make a profit by using fewer resources to make more valuable items. Certainly there have to be rules for economic activity, but the general rules were in place a century or two ago and almost everything since is government butting in where it has no business.
    5. Government funded research to spur science and technology. As with education and infrastructure, it is hard to tell whether this money is being used wisely. There is always a chance that politically popular projects rather than those useful to consumers will be funded, for example. Research money should come from businesses involved in the productive economy.
    The economic crisis is a crisis of government coercion. The solutions would include but not be limited to the following:
    1. Streamline the tax system, for businesses and individuals. Abolish profits taxes; impose a very low single digit rate on gross business income that will generate approximately the same revenue. All tax breaks and exemptions would be scrapped. For individuals, retain the personal, spousal, child and charitable exemptions, then make sure the top rate is not too high.
    2. End all subsidies to activist groups, businesses, organizations, agricultural operations, etc. In some instances, like the latter, it might be better to act cooperatively with other nations as much as possible, to minimize disruption.
    3. Deregulate the economy. Business should be motivated by profitability, not government diktats. Some environmental, health and safety rules might be retained, and caution should be exercised in some sectors such as banking and finance. But it was regulations regarding lending for mortgages that were the primary cause of the 2008 meltdown.
    4. Plan to abolish the welfare state after a grace period. The hope is that by adopting a full free market economy, many of the recipients of welfare and EI will move into the productive sector and a good part of the welfare state can die by attrition. Some programs, like health care and (especially) pensions, would likely have to carry on for years.
    5. A voucher system for education.
