Jim Rogers is good at what he does. Really good. With George Soros, this masterful investor co-founded the Quantum Fund. The Quantum fund posted astonishing returns of 4200% in 10 years, the same time period the S&P gained a mere 47%.
Clearly one of the most successful investors of all-time, Rogers buys value. In 1999 he predicted a “Supercycle” commodity bull market when Gold was trading near its low of $252, the lowest real price in nearly a 100 years, and Silver at $4 the lowest real price in 5000 years.
Rogers: “I wouldn’t buy more gold and silver right now” “I don’t like to jump on a moving bus”. Instead Rogers Rogers is buying agriculture, a greater commodity opportunity that he thinks offers the same kind of values that Gold and Silver did a decade ago. Agriculture will be “wildly exciting” as global food shortages worsen, according to Rogers. “You pick an agriculture product and I’ll say buy it,”

so let’s say you were really unscrupulous and fantastically rich.
In conjunction with enviro-parasites, you successfully engineer an environmental crisis centered around the notion that carbon dioxide caused by burning fossil fuels is leading the world to armageddon.
As a result, 40% of the farmland is taken out of food production for the production of corn-sourced ethanol, an ‘energy-negative’ fuel.
Yup. I guess agriculture investments might be “wildly exciting”.
Wait ’til Michael Moore gets a hold of this!!!!
I don’t like Soros, but the guy knows how to make money. Or should I say he knows how to derive wealth from devalueing money.
An interesting perspective. Rogers has been big on agriculture for a number of years now.
I dont know if he is right or wrong on Gold but if the idea takes hold that inflation is not imminent then Gold will tkae a hit. Deleveraging, which needs to happen at the government level, is deflationary.
Housholds are in the middle of it, businesses have largely completed the cycle. Governments havent even started.
More interesting to me is how Rogers and Soros got together and if they are still colleagues. I believe their politics and world views are enormously different. SO their perscriptions on this current situation diverge, ROgers is hack the debt….Soros is spend to create jobs.
Each view leads to very different estimates of the future based on current policy.
I would also listen to the guys at PIMCO, Mohammed El Barien and Bill Gross. Two very smart guys who run the largest Bond Fund in the world.
At the end of the day nobody knows, and whoever guesses right will make lots and lots of money.

Good to see somebody’s catching up.
I’ve been in fertilizer component companies (potash, phosporous) for more than a year on the theory that when all the social justice economies collapse, people still have to eat.
Now that we’re closer to the death throes of the welfare state, my portfolio should keep shooting up.
I figure gold and silver will level off somewhat once it becomes clear the US populace will tire of Obama. By mid-March next year, the precious metals fun will be done.
As far as the nanosecond traders issue goes .. get over it.
Ok, a few things, since people might be spending their own money here:
Rogers is a tout. always bragging about his ideas, so he can drive the story. Been doing it for years. yes, he is often right, but it seems very self serving, these outbursts where he explains where is going. I would not be surprised if he was short gold.
secondly, farmland is an illiquid investment, that requires work. And does not have a quote on CNBC. so, he does not have to report quarterly returns the same way he does with gold. this is a huge advantage for him. remember this.
and the work that the fields require? in the US, that will like be done by illegals. keep that in mind as well.
This isn’t to say farmland won’t be a good investment. I have been looking at it for sure. but I do not trust Rogers.
YMMV

How can the gold bull be dead? All the major economies in the world are in serious debt. What value will their currencies have? Gold has to become a defacto world currency. When prices hit over $2500 I might reconsider.
My belief in gold does not diminish my agreement with Rogers that agriculture will experience a bull run. Money might be made but the resulting kaos as millions starve simply feeds into my belief in gold as well.
All these sceanarios are based on the coming inability of governments to spend money they don’t have. It has to result on a hugh writedown of asset values. The coming kaos could also lead to confiscation of wealth (simply to tide the poor over to recover, of course).
chaos.
kaos is the evil agency in Get Smart.
The agriculture thing is no longer a hot tip, what with it being on the cover of TIME magazine and all.
The gold thing, I’m not a trader. I’m watching the uproar today, and I’m thinking that while the USA and the American Dollar are in rough shape, consider what shape all the other currencies are in. Euros? Swiss gubmint is actively de-valuing the Swiss Franc because nobody in Europe can buy their stuff. Yen? Likewise. Chicom Yuan? Same same.
Inflation only happens in relationship to other currencies, as I understand it. The Greenback may be f-ed, but its still slightly less f-ed than everything else, isn’t it? Relative to what else is available, its still a good deal.
We could actually see de-flation at this point. That would really frag Barry’s borrow-ruin-inflate- plans eh? đ
Although America is in trouble right now I wouldn’t discount their ability to turn the ship around. There has never been a civilization like this founded on the principles of freedom and free market capitalism.
Yes for sure some people have pulled away from these ideas but the ones who haven’t are more energized and determined than ever. Obama is Carter and soon a Reagan will rise from the ashes. Anyway I’m buying the S&P 500 and I’ll keep buying until I retire.
Agriculture? He’s on to something but not quite there yet.
The best policy now is to stockpile arms, ammunition, food, water, fuel, and medicine far away from populations centers, deep in the mountains and find a valley suitable for……you guessed it….AGRICULTURE!
“How can the gold bull be dead?” – ct at 10:47 AM
Rogers is not saying the Gold Bull is dead. He is not selling.
Rogers -“gold is certainly going to go to $2,000 over the years; it looks like it’s going to go much higher during the course of the bull market”.
How can you go wrong with agriculture, as the global population increases by approximately 75 million a year (compounded like interest)?
After all we (western nations & Russia) feed the exponentially growing world.
Itâs supply and demand economics, there is not much left of arable land to farm left on earth (Iâve heard 5% remaining), fresh water resource are diminishing and itâs up to the individual if they believe in âpeak oilâ for fertilizer resources or not. I happen too.
At the end of the day, ethanol production aside, we genetically modify our crops to meet yield demands and stress the mineral base of our soils. As with Russia 2010, it will only take a major drought, or wheat/ rice virus, possibly runaway issues with some genetic crop modification etcetera to bring the house down.
Then food gets really expensive. You can’t eat gold and governments like to occasionally just take it from you.
ct: “Gold has become a de-facto world currency”?
Show your work.
@KNIGHT99
First of all you can take every single living man woman and child and stick em inside the boarder of quebec and give them each 2280 square feet to live speaking space wise , yes i know where do they sh!t and p!iss , so on and so forth i get that but i am just doing a comparason we are far from over populating this planet or over using it’s natural resources ..as long as there is techtonic movment oil is being created , fressh water is being created as well every day .
75 million birth’s per year? How many death’s per year and i wouldl iek to see how many of those death’s the religion of peace is responsible for lol.
If you leveled all of the ukrain completley and turned it into staraight farm land you could feed almost the whole continent , pork cattle lamb ,corn ,potatoes, tomatoes, egg’s chicken, beans, coliflower lettuce, beat’s,and onions. I am speaking figuratively and from a land use point of view we have a long way to go before we are even close to overpopulating this planet ..there are certainly concentrations (cities) around the globe that are over populated but that is there fault for trying to pile people onto people …spead out a bit i beelive humanity is best served in small communities through out the land’s around the world just my opinion!!
Obama’s rhetoric will keep American bellies as full as they have become accustomed to having them….
paul in calgary >
You have your opinion and it’s a good opinion shared with millions. I have mine which again is shared with millions.
To clarify, I said population growth, not births.
Itâs an argument about as moot as whether third world immigration is good for Canada or not. Itâs happening and will never stop until either the leftist Multicultural dream is met, or disastrous ruin to traditional Canadian lifestyle and third world status is achieved.
Anyway, to each their own, prep yourself anyway you see fit, or not at all. I’m looking after mine, all that matters really.
I’m not buying what he’s selling.
I’m not putting money into agristocks either.
I’m puutting it into gold coins, silver coins and agriculture itself (actual growing and harvesting and ownership). And arable land.
Tangibles are king.
google ‘repeal ethanol mandates’
@knight99
Iam not arguing with you at all i am simply putting forward fact this is not to deminish your point or intent at all i mean that.
I purchase alot of silver coin’s ..not sheet’s of paper saying i own silver coin’s, i also store food and especially water and chlorination tablets (i think that is what they are called) so i can clean water that may be dirty . i actually think your foolish if you don’t store food gun’s ammunition ..the old saying is better to have a gun and not need it then need a gun and not have it and that applies to all kinds of scenario’s from apocolyptic to camping in the woods …simple words to live by yet most don’t , storing basic medical supplies and out door gear survival stuff is soo darn cool these day’s .
Having said that to try to reassure you (witch i doubt i can) It really will take much much more than this to bring the entire world to the brink of colapse there are to many good people out there who won’t let it happen i mean just plain old good people not people with money or power just good people ..if the economies of the west colapse great let em we will start over except this time i hope we learn from our mistakes . i actually would not mind a pretty serious fall of the west to wake the spoiled little pot smoking shit heads in the west the whiny bleeding hearts who want everything for nothing and would trade it in for just a little more you know there are children i see every day some i truley feel sorry for i pray for them (i pray for all ) and then i here about a 16 year old boy who raped a 15 yearold girl in front of friends and i realy hope something really serious happens something that profoundly changes peoples attitudes around the world (i wish jesus would come i pray for it all the time call me selfish ) but if i can’t have that then something really bad like china invades canada or america or russia and china team up and try to conqure europe i want to see the hippie anti church anti war anti canada , anti american pro abortionist lefttards try to politicolly correct speech themselves out of that one and no not to the point of just saying well we were never for the war i want ti to be sooo bad that they have to agree to a full on battle for survival i want it to hit so close to home with them that they are rocked right to there very core and are forced litterally forced themselves to take up arms or die or side with the ones who will and be vocal about it …once we send the evil ones packing ….make and amendment to all western constitutions that state that liberalism is a mental disorder that may or maynot be helped with treatment no matter the casue it is not allowed in stated country unless the perpetrator of the leftism liberalism agree’s to seak years of reversal councelling and a total overhaul of there outlook on life ….i would also never do any buisness with any country that has even a slight contradiction to stated countries constituition!!!
Knight 99 i am on your side . I think like you but you need to open your fianncial horizons …if you invest in gold or stock’s and they lose everything loses if they gain great …however if they completley colapse there is no need to worry about paying it back or being broke becasue it won’t matter anymore you will be fighting for your life never mind working to pay your mortgage ….watch the book of eli great movie!!!
Peace!! god bless you
History folks History
In a crisis’s and empires collapse its tangibles, Gold, Silver gems, as long as you can hold and carry you can barter and trade.
Agriculture, gee no big deal, as long as you live you need food, you need agriculture.
Question is to what state of collapse are we planning for ?
Of course as I’m sure many of the readers here are aware there are other scenarios
Ya can’t eat gold.
Potash is a good investment, as well as other agricultural commodities.
Realty check on ethanol: Yes ethanol is a net energy loss IF the spent mash is discarded as waste.
Most of the feedstock for ethanol is feed corn which is grown for the industrial meat business. If they feed the spent mash to the animals, then the ethanol is just a useful byproduct.
In short, producing ethanol does not necessarily reduce the food supply.
The real competition is between using the corn sugar for fuel or for junk food.

No issues at all Paul, I knew we were on the same page, simply some discrepancies between individual ideas, which is normal. I didnât want to attempt to argue moot ideas with you as you seem like a stand-up guy by your posts, so agreed to disagree. Yup I do indeed invest a little in gold, although I donât put allot of priority into it. Gold to me is simply another investment in which to diversify. Am also well stocked on everything else you mentioned and fairly self reliant as needed, meaning can live âoff the gridâ in relative comfort for some time, many years in fact.
Iâm not an apocalyptic âdoomsdayerâ, simply someone who likes to be prepared as possible for any bad eventuality I can think of. I believe some very hard economic times are ahead. What shape that will take, who knows. My gut feeling is somewhere between long term common recession and Argentina late 1990âs. I believe in the extreme long term we may be looking at something akin to living in Mexico within a few generations. Not unlike what California is slowly discovering and developing into now.
As we flood our nations with the third world, we are bound to eventually devolve as nations. Hide your copper mailboxes and lawn ornaments; they are already disappearing around the US. What did they honestly think would happen?
Anyway, hope for the best & plan for the worst.

Bull Shit. When you factor in the subsidies, corn-sourced ethanol is always a loser – no matter how the ‘mash’ is used.
Wherever Soros goes it benefits SOROS and enriches himself at the expense of entire countries.
The collapse of 2008 has his fingerprints all over it and it was designed to put Obama in the WH.
We see the result. When Soros makes money entire funds disappear and governments are thrown into turmoil. The people behind those foundering governments are never considered. We are watching a Soros destruction in the US right now and it is not pretty. When they have finished looting the US they will be looking around for more booty to gather up. We are being pulled down the drain by the power of the whirlpool of destruction engendered by these parasites on society.
First, the gold bull is not dead. Despite what Rogers says, the truth is no fiat currency has ever died from devaluation; the path is always inflation, hyper-inflation, and then repudiation.
Jamie MacMaster, you missed the point.
What part of
“The real competition is between using the corn sugar for fuel or for junk food.”
couldn’t you comprehend?
Subsidized feed corn is the problem, regardless if it’s used to make junk food or junk fuel.
Ethanol is a scam to foster corn subsidies.
Biodiesel is a much more efficient fuel. For every BTU of petroleum used to produce biodiesel about 5 BTUs of biodiesel are produced.
The jackals are readying themselves for the carcasses. The drooling has started.
Sadly, as of late, reading the book of Lamentations is eerily similar to reading the daily news headlines on the Drudge Report.
Jamie MacMaster, you’re missing the point…what part of “The real competition is between using the corn sugar for fuel or for junk food.”

No, you’re missing ‘the’ point I commented on.
“…Yes ethanol is a net energy loss IF the spent mash is discarded as waste…”
Corn-sourced ethanol IS a net energy loss whether the mash is discarded or not.
Rogers is probably buying gold but discouraging others (Keeps the stampede to manageable numbers). The trick is not boarding the moving gold bus but getting off a moving gold bus before it goes on a return route.
In 1913 when gold was money the us had $21 of gold for every $20 of paper money.
Today gold would have to be 7k per ounce just to equal the amount of US fiat currency in circulation.
When the price of agricultural products goes up people get upset. They riot. They protest and they sometimes even overthrow governments.
When gold goes up in price no one gets upset and more of the debt of the governments holding the gold can be covered.
