  1. When the world was on a gold standard and the money supply could not be increased this would mean a depression is on the way (deflation). On a fiat money standard it means that more borrowing, stimulus and currency debasement is on the way (inflation). The US politicians are very worried about unemployment in 2012 (Their own). They will do anything to keep that from happening.

  2. adults have to emerge soon to turn this economy ship around. Green jobs and everything these useless environMENTALists have shoved down govts. throats have been nothing more than wealth destroyers. Witness the tall foreheads of the intelliduncia from Princeton Harvard etc sending a letter to Obongo to shut down the Keystone (wealth and job generating) pipeline. Yea, lets stop something like this in these jobless times, well Alberta can ship the bitumen west and China will be glad to refine it and then the Obongoites can sit around a non-polluting simulated campfire growing their ponytails and scraggly beards expounding on their superior Iggy type brains.

  3. a friend liquidated his stock portfolio last week hoping to stop the bleeding and retain his wealth acculamation that took his lifetime to create.

  4. The Baltic Dry commodities list contain a lot of agricultural products.
    Coal
Grain (wheat, maize, rice, barley, oats, rye, sorghum, soybeans, etc.)
Iron (ferrous & non-ferrous ores, ferroalloys, pig iron, scrap metal, pelletized taconite), etc.)
    Bauxite
    Wood chips
    Cement
Chemicals (fertilizer, plastic granules & pellets, resin powder, synthetic fiber, etc.)
Dry edibles (for animals or humans: alfalfa pellets, citrus pellets, livestock feed, flour, peanuts, raw or refined sugar, seeds, starches, etc.)
Bulk minerals (sand & gravel, copper, limestone, salt, etc.)
Why would BDI indicate a downturn in ag commodities? Seems that inventories are still on the tight side. Could it be the tide turning against US corn ethanol?
US corn makes up 40% of the worlds corn crop and 50% of world corn trade. Because of climate alarmism, about half of the US corn crop is now diverted from food to fuel use. Because of the American mandated ethanol blend in gasoline, ag production of all major grains worldwide has been ramped up the last few years. Argentina alone has brought a huge number of acres of ‘new’ land into production.
Members of the US Congress are now looking into repealing the ethanol mandate. Scary, when one considers what a 5% increase in available corn for food can do do corn prices – imagine what a 50% increase would do. Could this be part of what the Baltic Dry Index is seeing in the future? Al Gore turmoil?

  5. Thank goodness I live on a lake where there are millions (not exaggerating) of tasty perch and white bass.

  6. may be moving to Vermont, even though I live a 100 miles or less from three and half great lakes (St Clair). one would starve to death or might rather choose to.

  7. I agree. SK is the place to be now. I left Ontario 5 years ago when there were no jobs for experienced engineers, except for assembly line work at 9 dollars an hour. Now I own two houses here free and clear. A nice turnaround personnaly.
