A vote for Canada’s Best Political Book of the Past 25 Years goes horribly wrong.
Well, done SDA Nation. Well done.
National Post has more.

Heh!
Beautiful! This made my day.
Nice …. now can we put Mags Atwood in her place?
Well, it was the best book out of that sad selection. Cheers….
CBC millies or the cluster-ducks of Toronto Starwipe did not vote obviously, or, Turdos Making of Canada, or Turdo in Theses Troubled Times, or Turdo Meets and is Smitten by Suzuki, or Turdo Throws a Rock Mulroneys Way, or Turdo Takes a Walk in the Snow, or Turdo’s Three Sons would have won hands-down. Did anyone see the Red Stars stellular lineup of cluster duckers all out apology and circle the Priuses attempt today to give a pass to E. Jacks hand-picked sepratist, altogether now, “it’s Harpers fault coombayah”.
Nice to see Ezra get some payback from his critics. When one works like he does so hard for freedom. He deserves a bit of recognition.
Most Canadians if they could write, feel the same as Ezra for free speech.
Keep up the good work Ezra.
My congratulations to Ezra! He EARNED the top spot!
Yeah, I don’t get why this is “horribly wrong”. Are you saying you don’t think it deserves that award, Kate?
Great! I was damned happy to go over and vote for Ezra. Stevie Cameron’s book, which I read when it first came out,is nothing but a smear job on Brian Mulroney (who I don’t admire).
Good for Ezra.
Does anyone know anything about Samara, the organization that conducted this poll? They claim to be a charitable organization working to “strengthen Canada’s democracy.”
Who’s definition of democracy are they using? I hope it’s not these guys: http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/archives/016276.html
The apparent bias towards more “Liberal”-sided books makes me suspicious.
Well he’s no Margaret Atwood (thank God!).
I own the book and I’ve read it.
I agree. Ezra’s book is the best of the list. Nothing horribly wrong here at all. Congrats Mr. Levant.
Lawrence Martin’s book actually looks interesting – no time to read it though
Tomorrow, Wednesday, Ezra is interviewing Mark Steyn on Sun TV. Make sure you catch it.
Did they publish the final vote tallies? They say Ezra “edged out” the third and second place books but I don’t trust them.
This never would have happened without the internet. Writers Trust includes the usual suspects like Marg Atwood etc. If not for internet votes you can be sure a good Liberal would have taken it.
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
The evil right wing conspiracy wins again!
And I have my autographed copy too!
Shakedown is the only book on the list that I have read, which mad my vote an honest one.
When Ezra was in Vancouver I bought five copies and had him enscribe them to people by name. One was to an NDP cabinet minister in the Barrett government of the early ’70s. Handing that copy over was FUN!
Meeker – my thoughts exactly. Ezra is noted as being “conservative” but none of the others are labeled as liberal/fascist/communist/loony. One even managed to work for 2 levels of government without the party affiliation(s) being mentioned.
All the usual suspects here: Lawrence Martin, Stevie Cameron, Christina McCall and Stephen Clarkson, John Ralston Saul, John Duffy, Richard Gwyn, Paul Wells, all the same-old, same-old, c/Conservative-bashing, reconstructionist, Canadian hacks — and then there’s Ezra!
Congrats, Ezra! Your book uncovered the partisan crap that passes for “objective,” “on-the-edge” journalism in Canada. You’re not part of this incestuous old-boy/old-gal network.
‘Time for some new players and Ezra’s leading them (he and Mark Steyn).
BRAVO, Ezra—and SDA voters!
This is sweet. One notices the VERY SHORT Samara blurb about the outcome of their vaunted contest—as if they were holding their noses, which I’m sure they were.
I wrote here on July 1, “Check out the authors of these books: nine, at least, of the 12 are left-wing, journalistic insiders. So, the survey’s already fixed: the lefties who chose the books seem to have allowed one right of centre book—Ezra’s—to slip through in order to pay lip service, I guess.”
These smug “old boys” sure weren’t expecting that an unrepentant upstart from the SUN TV crew would win: the shame! Yup, for Samara, the poll went horribly wrong. Schadenfreude, guys and Peggy Atwood!
It’s sad how you assume that everyone’s motives are as twisted as your own.
The other reason Ezra deserved to win this prize is because he exposed the lack of freedom of speech that many of the writers he was up against refused, year after year, to either write about or condemn because they were on the right side — that would be the
left side — of the political spectrum, so loved by Canadian journos.
It’s entirely a happy, schadenfreude moment, lookout, to see someone other than a leftist journalist, who just keeps going round and round the incestuous, Canadian journalistic
merry-go-round, come up a winner.
Well-done, Mr. Levant! Keep up the good work!
Kudos to the people running it for playing by their own rules honestly and not throwing a whining tantrum about the voting.
And congrat’s to Mr. Levant too, as it was deserved.
I voted … I bought the book when it was first released and went to an event where Ezra was speaking and got him to sign it.
Congrats to Ezra and Kate and all the smart voters at SDA.
Made my day.
batb, great comments @ 8:30 and 9:05, right on the money. The people you mention all work on the basis of their view is the norm and any other view is unacceptable.
I’m shocked that the Canadiana section of our libraries is identical. _ but I have more titles in paperback. Kate shops the bargain bins for cheep hardback editions 😉

“It’s sad how you assume that everyone’s motives are as twisted as your own.”
Naw it’s reality….we just recognize when these hacks motives are as transparent and as twisted as yours.
Right’s close enough…
Or didn’t you notice the 9 out of 12 ratio.
I bought the book, Ezra signed it, I voted for him Thus I endorse this message.

Go through the sum-total of all political books written in the last 25 years, and let me know what the ratio is. Do the words “representative simple” mean anything to you?
No, it’s not what you dropped off at the doctors office last week. Try again.
