118 Replies to “Jack Layton Stepping Down”

  1. Liveblog over at CBC: cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/07/25/layton-ndp.html
Officially, he’s stepping aside temporary in order to receive treatment.

  2. May allah bless him. I truly hope he receives quality service in Ontario’s public health system, and does not sit on waiting lists for months.

  3. This might make some interesting power struggles in the NDP party. Should create some interesting discussions in the near future.

  4. Jack you and I will agree on few things in this life but one thing we will agree on is that you recover fully. Personally I hope you get to spend many many years in a happy healthy retirement.
    Godspeed Jack Layton Godspeed!

  5. I heard him on the radio and he sounded just awful. I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

  6. I’ve never agreed with any of his political views. That’s irrelevant though. Having watched some loved ones suffer through and eventually succumb to this most terrible disease, I truly & sincerely wish him the very best in his fight against it. I also wish positive sentiments on his family & friends who also will feel terrible throughout as they know that there’s nothing they can do.
Good luck in your fight, Jack!

  7. I also don’t agree with very much he says or does but wish him a full and speedy recovery from this terrible, terrible disease.

  8. I am devastated
I used to be quebecois separatiste but jack gave me reasons to have hope in canada.
    Va y fort Jack
    Tu vaincras!

  9. Never will agree with very much of anything you say or profess to believe, but godspeed with this horrible affliction.

  10. I used to be quebecois separatiste but jack gave me reasons to have hope in canada.
Neither Jack Layton nor any commie NDP leader will ever be Prime Minister of a Canada that includes Alberta.

  11. Like many of you I find everything he stands for distasteful, but I sincerely wish him a full and speedy recovery.
And I wonder what this does for the prospects of the Liberal Party, especially if Mister Layton has to leave politics?

  12. “jack gave me reasons to have hope in canada. (sic)”
Then you’re officially screwed. Recovery or not, let’s hope he’s fine, he will never influence the political situation in any meaningful way. Now, I suggest you renew your separatist impulse and don’t let anything dissuade you. Try not to be such a quitter! I’m cheering you on…because you’re just so darn funny.

  13. let’s hope that he can tell the difference between a real clinic and a, er, ahh…
    oh, forget it.
Laughter can be good medicine but not at the expense of someone battling the Big C.
    Good luck and best wishes…

  14. As a fellow cancer sufferer, I wish no better than my fate. No worse either, for that matter.
    He’s still an asshole

  15. Not the time for partisan politics; time to wish, hope or pray Jack gets well. All the best Jack!

  16. A doctor friend of mine commented that during the election Jack appeared to be suffering and suspected that it had returned at that time.
Dont like him but wish him no ill will as I know with my family history it will likely be my own fate.

  17. I want him to get healthy, come back and then retire after getting thumped in a federal election.
    Best wishes, Jack.

  18. Although Jack irritates the hell out of me I was saddened by his appearance. He’s is dedicated to his party and supporters.
    Good Luck Jack!

  19. I cannot abide Jack Layton’s political standpoint, however on this human plane of existence
my wish for Jack that he is to be encircled with the “christ” principle and so I wish him full recovery from his ailment.

  20. I don’t mean to offend anyone but I’ve seen far to many men die of cancer not to reconize end stage cancer when I see it. My Uncle had prostrate cancer and was cured, then boom it had spread to his pelvis and he died within six weeks of diagnoses. God Bless ya Jack, god bless ya.

  21. Much as I detested what the man stood for, this is not good for Canada. We might think that two more unopposed terms of Tory majority rule will be great for Canada, but I’m not so sure they will be.
Conservatism does not do well when it rules unfettered for several years (Maggie Thatcher, Brain Mulroney, Ronald Reagan). The resulting “lefty” dynasties that replace majority conservative governments after long periods, are usually absolutely disastrous for many Western countries.
The NDP sprogs who got tossed into office by delusional Quebecers are in dire need of guidance This parliament could have worked wonders on educating and informing an entire generation of young, leftist politicians with their heads in the clouds. It is also good for the public to frequently be in a position to observe leftist politicians in action, so that clear and informed choices can be made.
Now I fear they (NDP) will soon be almost entirely absent from any kind of position of responsibility and accountability for many years. Not good.
It was less damaging for Tory types when they were in the wilderness, since many were business people to begin with, so had some exposure to reality.
I hate to say it, but we as a country now need a Liberal Party leader without his/her head up his/her a**.

  22. I hope the cancer doesn’t take his life, but I sure hope it takes him out of politics. He is an arrogant man who has done far more harm than good, and has lived off the public teat for decades.

  23. As others have said, may he beat this demon, and then retire gracefully.

  24. I beat cancer, but have NO sympathies for Jack on this, he worked to hard to get my scorn for me to toss it because of sympathy

  25. Yes this is bad for Canada. No doubt Mulcair will take power eventually, and be so irrational and incompetent that he will really get sovereignty movement going again.

  26. I too wish him luck in battling this disease.
Having said that, I see that CBC is still living in an alternate universe…..

  27. Jack didn’t look well during the election campaign and probably did his health no favours by campaigning. He needed to take his leave when he was fighting prostate cancer.
He has a big fight on his hands, far more important than politics. Surely we all wish him well and support him in this fight, this is beyond politics.

  28. Agreed.
This is the time to put politics aside and send best wishes for a recovery.
When he is better, we can get back to politics.

  29. re: “This won’t get political unless he’s spotted at the Mayo.” I think that should be “a” Mayo. There’s a lot of them now. I’d guess that Layton will go to Sloan-Kettering in in NYC.

  30. I wish Jack a full recovery. Maybe when he gets back, he can help me understand why higher taxes and lower corporate profits are good for families.

  31. Cancer is something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I only hope he doesn’t bump anyone on the wait list because he is a “somebody.”

  32. quote-Layton is considered the most popular federal leader among Canadians -unquote
saw that , and none of the polls show it or ever showed it. as you said. CBCpravda in the alternate universe. I guess with the libs gone, Jack is the most popular in the CBC newsroom.

  33. I was shocked when I saw the photo of him in the National Post.
Though I disagree with Jack Layton’s politics, I wish him only the best as he fights this latest diagnosis of cancer. I don’t think there’s any family that has been spared watching a loved one struggle with, and sometimes die, of this terrible disease.
    Godspeed, Jack.

You’re a sweet, trusting, naive soul who shouldn’t ever be allowed out unatteded 🙂 Of course he’ll be bumped.
But I wouldn’t wish cancer on… well, you’d have to be worse than Jack. I wish him well.

  35. I can’t stand you as a politician i think your one of the worst self serving ignorant people in politics today.
However i am saddened to hear you have been struck with something that many many others suffer through throughout this world , i wish you a speedy recovery and wish and pray for you and your family may you have peace through these tring times Mr.Layton.

  36. I do not agree with and can not agree with anything Jack stands for, but wish him the best for his recovery.
whit seven, good advice @ 2:45
    What Kate said is right.

  37. I think things are not going to turn out well for him, very sad news.
On another note, this is the first time I can remember (with him stepping aside) that I can’t even name ONE MEMBER of the opposition party.

  38. I spotted Jack in the Ottawa airport in June, following the election. He looked frail, skinny, and he hobbled along on his cane. It was a far cry from his election night appearance when he threw his cane and spoke with gusto. I knew when I saw him that he wasn’t doing so well.
Hate his politics, hope he gets better soon.
