The Toronto District School Board says it is meeting its obligation to accommodate students’ religious beliefs by allowing an imam to lead students in prayer on school property.
The board came under fire this week when a Hindu group that regularly criticizes Islam raised objections to Friday Muslim prayer sessions, which have been held inside a cafeteria at Valley Park Middle School in Flemingdon Park for about three years.

I grew up in India – studied and worked there. The muslim community in India is very large (poor, illiterate and forever causing trouble) but they never got time off either at schools or in the workplace to go for prayers and there was not a peep out of them. They come to western countries and realize that it is easy to play the ‘Islamophobia’ card and get away with all kinds of utterly unreasonable demands and that is what they are doing with wanting prayers in the school on Friday. I absolutely abhor the idea of not having a choice in eating ‘halal’ food. Why should I have to eat meat that has been prayed over by a death-cult religion and where the animal has been cruelly killed? Also, it makes very good economic sense for the muslims to demand halal – they get to create jobs for their community and also force the rest of the general population to consume halal foods, further proving us ‘dhimmis’.
It’s astounding to have one religion allowed in a Public School when religious indoctrination is against their rules.
What’s even worse that religion segregates the boys from the girls with a curtain and the girls who are menstruating are sidelined. What kind of country is this becoming that we allow such discrimination with stone age dictates in our schools?
We should all be outraged.

Yes. Aside from objections to the slaughtering practices***, if all the meat in supermarkets is Halal (which seems to be the case in much of Britain at least), and the cafeteria thing and etc. – if it’s just easier to make everything Halal – then the butchering and much of the food prepertation industry becomes a virtual Muslim monopoly.
Halal meat can be served in Muslim stores and restaurants. Muslim mommies can pack lunch for their own kiddies. Conservative and Orthodox Jews don’t demand we all eat Kosher just to make their lives easier. If Kosher food is/was served in majority Jewish public schools I’d be very surprised.
(If you don’t have time to make your kids a sandwich maybe you don’t have time for kids anyway, but that’s something else.)

I think a lot of people in this country continue to be unabashed supporters of Mr. Trudeau and his
‘multicultural’ adventure.
While ‘multiculturalism’ successfully garnered new-immigrant votes for Liberals (and now for Conservatives), its impact may not have been well thought out by the whole Canadian tribe.
We are a country largely created by European immigrants. Their ethics, culture and religion are woven into our national fabric. That weaving was not trouble-free, it required give and take and perhaps several polarizing threats to our country to put issues in perspective.
I believe new immigrants arrive here thinking that ‘multicultural’ Canada allows them to enjoy their culture as it was in their native land.
In some cases, the Canadian tribe is a little uncomfortable with that, particularly with issues that seem contrary or off-colour to our fabric.
So where are we as a country wrt. immigration and multiculturalism? I think the people (not the politicians), are somewhere between the melting- pot and multiculturalism and I don’t think that’s a bad thing. It seems a funny thing happened on the way to the Kumbaya…

I hate to say it, but your views might reflect the current state of the law. Remember all that Kirpans are allowed in schools. That bit of religious observance/accomodation was forced upon us in 2006.
To me the debate I am observing should not be about whether this school prinicpal made an unnecessary accomodation. The debate should be about what does Canada want to preserve as its culture and what does Canada expect of its immigrants.
I personally like the way the pendulum appears to be swinging now. There is recognition of Canada’s culture and history and a requirement that immigrants subscribe to the basic tenets of our society. We need to determine whether Having a Mosque in the school and the Islamic treatment of girls in that Mosque conforms to what we expect of Canadians. If it doesn’t then it shouldn’t be allowed.
Similarly if carrying a knife around doesn’t conform to our definition of acceptable behaviour in Canadians, it shouldn’t be allowed either.
End public schooling.

Halal is not only a sadistic way of killing animals, it’s a discriminatory practice pushed by Muslims. As Penny pointed out – in converting all public meat to halal, Muslims secure jobs only for themselves and in so doing, control an industry. You cannot be non-Muslim working in the halal business.
The way to object to halal infiltration at cafeterias and grocery stores is not to complain on a religious basis, but on an animal cruelty basis.
If halal was banned based on exceptionally perverse killing methods, the flow of immigration would likely reverse.
Likewise, for discriminatory hiring practices.
Turning the tide requires as much intelligence, infiltration, lobbying, ambition and subterfuge as the opposition commands.
Lets try something.
Lets see if the muslim prayer group would allow non-muslims to attend. If not then the muslims are misusing a public facility by restricting its use based on religious belief. The HRC should be all over this.
